Abstract

The presence of cohesive devices in speech plays a crucial role in representing the functioning of language. Beyond enhancing the effectiveness of written communication, cohesive devices guide listeners into the realm of context, fostering a shared understanding of meaning. This research focuses on analyzing grammatical and lexical cohesions in Donald Trump's inauguration speech from the 2016 United States presidential election, which took place on January 20th, 2017. The objective of the study is to explore the representation of both grammatical and lexical cohesions. A qualitative method was employed, and data were extracted from pauses in Trump's speech, specifically noting cohesive devices. The findings reveal that grammatical cohesion encompasses references, substitutions, ellipsis, and conjunctions. Lexical cohesions identified include repetition, synonymy, antonymy, hyponymy, meronymy, and collocation. Repetition was observed in 29 pauses, substitutions in 6 pauses, ellipsis in 8 pauses, and conjunctions in 31 pauses. Regarding lexical cohesion, the study identified repetition in 32 pauses, synonymy in 10 pauses, antonymy in 5 pauses, hyponymy in 3 pauses, meronymy in 2 pauses, and collocation in 6 pauses. However, it was noted that incohesive instances occurred in the case of conjunctions, potentially influenced by the situational or contextual factors. In conclusion, this study sheds light on the diverse cohesive devices employed in Trump's inauguration speech, emphasizing the significance of context in understanding language use.  Keywords: cohesive device, conjunctions, ellipsis, grammatical cohesion, lexical cohesion, substitutions

Abstract

This study investigates the semantic evolution of Generation Alpha's slang as reflected in the lyrics of Jelly House's YouTube song Last Rizzday Night. As a digital-native generation, Gen Alpha frequently reshapes language through their engagement with digital media. Analysing 15 slang terms, including "Rizz," "Skibidi," and "Sigma," the research examines how their meanings align with or diverge from standard dictionary definitions. Using a qualitative descriptive methodology, the study highlights linguistic shifts driven by digital culture, such as "Rizz" symbolizing charm and social success, and "Sigma" representing self-reliant confidence. The findings emphasize the role of contextual semantics in understanding generational language trends, offering insights for educators, content creators, and marketers aiming to connect with Gen Alpha effectively.

Abstract

This study suggests using positive politeness strategies, as seen through the speech of BTS Kim Namjoon. It also seeks to identify Asian cultural habits in communication-based on Namjoon's Asian background. This research also uses a descriptive qualitative approach based on the transcript of the YouTube video. Based on this research, it can be seen that Brown and Levinson's (1987) theory is used as the leading theory of the analysis. The supporting theory of this research comes from Samovar et al. (2013), who suggest the habits of Asians when communicating. This research shows that BTS Kim Namjoon often uses positive politeness in the strategies of "exaggeration" and "include both S and H in the activity."  This research consist spositive politeness strategies used by BTS’ Kim Namjoon to uphold the social relationship and maintain the social interactions between the individuals.

Abstract

Turn-taking manages mechanical speaking turns and creates a cooperative, dynamic, and entertaining conversation. Therefore, creating pleasant and engaging experiences allows participants to express their ideas confidently. Thus, this study investigates how such an experience is facilitated by the turn-taking mechanism in Happy Sad Confused and identifies how markers are used as strategies in conversational dynamics. This study used a descriptive qualitative method and Stenström's (1994) theory related to turn-taking strategies. The data were collected using Jefferson's (2009) transcription approach. The results of this study showed that the interaction between Josh Horowitz and Henry Cavill demonstrated a successful turn-taking mechanism to promote compelling discussion, allowing Henry Cavill to disclose emotive and in-depth work experiences. So, turn-taking also enriched conversational dynamics in a talk show scenario. Markers significantly contributed to maintaining the natural flow of communication and smooth transitions to keep the conversation rhythm. The most dominant marker by filled pauses (e.g., “ǝ:m”, “uh”) was 47 times. Overall, turn-taking maintained interesting communication. Speakers could use suitable tactics and markers to enable meaningful interactions, making talks more dynamic and entertaining for participants and viewers.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the phenomenon of language transfer, both positive and negative, on English pronunciation of native Sundanese speakers in Braga Street, Bandung. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through interviews and controlled speech tasks involving 17 participants. The analysis focused on identifying the types, causes, and impacts of language transfer on pronunciation. The findings reveal three forms of negative transfer: substitution, omission, and addition of sounds. Meanwhile, positive transfer is categorized based on similarities in consonants, vowels, and loanwords. Negative transfer patterns generally arise due to phonological differences between Sundanese as the first language (L1) and English as the second language (L2). On the other hand, positive transfer was found to support more accurate pronunciation. These findings offer valuable insights for developing English teaching strategies that strategically address phonological similarities and differences between L1 and L2. Furthermore, this study highlights the importance for tourism practitioners to prioritize effective English communication in order to enhance cross-cultural interactions with international visitors.

Abstract

Harun Nasution’s theological thought represents a significant effort to revive the role of reason as a central element in understanding Islamic teachings. In the context of Islamic thought in Indonesia, which has long been dominated by traditional and textual approaches, Harun Nasution reintroduced a rational perspective rooted in the Mu‘tazilite theological legacy. Through his academic education at Al-Azhar University and McGill University, he developed a theological framework that emphasized intellectual freedom, rationality, and the historical relevance of Islam in facing modern challenges. This study aims to explain how the integration of reason into Islamic studies was realized through Nasution’s rational theological approach, using a library research method with historical and thematic approaches. The analysis focuses on the historical development of rational kalam, the position of reason within theological methodology, and the impact of his thought on the reform of modern Islamic education. The findings show that Harun Nasution’s rational approach not only shaped a new paradigm in theological studies but also opened space for dialogue between Islam and contemporary intellectual discourse. His ideas make a significant contribution to building a more contextual, critical, and open understanding of Islam in response to the advancement of knowledge and social change.

Abstract

Religion in the contemporary era is often predicted to lose its relevance, as human dependency on transcendence is replaced by material progress and routine practices. Theocentric discourse dominates theological studies while social reality receives insufficient attention. This research aims to explain Hassan Hanafi’s concept of actual theology as a liberation-oriented alternative capable of reconnecting faith with concrete social struggle. This research employs qualitative library research using phenomenology as the analytical framework, centered on Hassan Hanafi’s primary text Min al-ʿAqīdah ilā al-Thawrah and supported by his project al-Turāth wa al-Tajdīd. The findings show that Hanafi reconstructs Islamic theology by shifting its epistemological axis from a purely theocentric-dogmatic orientation toward a theological anthropocentrism focused on justice, liberation, and historical agency. The research concludes that Hanafi’s actual theology offers a transformative paradigm: from creed to revolution, from metaphysical doctrines to social emancipation, providing a substantive contribution to contemporary Islamic theological reform.
