Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of pocket books on critical thinking skills related to the ecosystem theme among seventh-grade junior high school students. The study was conducted at SMPN 17 City of Serang using a quasi-experimental method with a nonequivalent control group design. Research instruments included critical thinking tests and student response questionnaires. Results showed an increase in critical thinking skills in the experimental class that used the pocket book, with an average posttest score of 79.5, compared to 72 in the control class. A Mann-Whitney test revealed a significance value of 0.001 (less than 0.05), indicating a significant effect. The effect size value of 0.957 indicates a large effect. Based on these results, it can be concluded that using pocketbooks on the theme of ecosystems effectively improves students' critical thinking skills.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the classification and distribution of questions in two Grade VII science textbooks under the Merdeka Curriculum on the topic of motion and force, published by Kemendikbudristek (2021) and Erlangga. The research employed a qualitative method with a content analysis approach, focusing on categorizing questions based on the Question Category System for Science (QCSS), which distinguishes four levels of thinking skills: cognitive memory, convergent, divergent, and evaluative. The data consisted of 103 questions identified from both textbooks and were supported by preliminary interviews with junior high school science teachers. The findings indicate that both textbooks consistently place convergent thinking as the dominant category, with 70% in Kemendikbudristek and 71.83% in Erlangga. However, significant differences emerge in higher-order thinking skills: the Kemendikbudristek textbook emphasizes divergent questions (61.53%) that encourage creativity and idea exploration, while the Erlangga textbook prioritizes evaluative questions (77.77%) that strengthen critical reasoning and decision-making. These findings reveal different pedagogical orientations, with Kemendikbudristek focusing more on fostering creativity and exploration, while Erlangga emphasizes critical thinking skills. In conclusion, both textbooks are relevant in fostering convergent thinking skills, yet a balanced proportion of divergent and evaluative questions is needed to comprehensively support students’ critical, creative, and scientific thinking in accordance with the demands of 21st-century learning.

Abstract

Current learning requires critical thinking skills, but the problem arises that students do not yet have critical thinking skills. Meanwhile, teachers have not created learning that can develop students' critical thinking skills. This is due to limited time in delivering very dense material. The lack of critical thinking skills can be addressed through learning activities that make students actively involved, namely by using E-LKPD. The purpose of this study was to determine the level of validity and readability of students towards E-LKPD based on critical thinking skills. The research method used was Research and Development (R&D) with the ADDIE development model (analysis, design, development, implementation, evaluation). Data were obtained through observation, interviews, validation, and student readability tests. The results of the study based on experts obtained a percentage of 92.02% with a very valid category and for the readability test obtained a result of 88% with a very good category. From the results of the validation and readability test, it can be concluded that the development of E-LKPD based on critical thinking skills is proven to be very valid and has very good readability.

Abstract

Science textbooks used as the primary learning resource should contain questions that stimulate curiosity and enhance students' thinking processes. Creative and critical thinking skills are essential skills in the 21st century. There are various types of questions, but the effectiveness of these questions in supporting learning success remains understudied. To determine the distribution of these questions, a classification using the Question Category System for Science (QCSS) can be used. This study aims to analyze the distribution and comparison of questions developed in independent curriculum science textbooks on the topic of substances and their changes based on the QCSS. The research method used is a qualitative descriptive method with a content analysis design. The data collection technique used is a document content review. The data analysis technique uses a model developed by Miles and Hubermen (1992). The results show that the questions developed in science textbook A consist of 16.36% cognitive memory questions, 52.72% convergent thinking questions, 27.28% divergent thinking questions, and 3.63% evaluative thinking questions. Furthermore, Science textbook B consists of 38.36% cognitive memory questions, 49.31% convergent thinking questions and 20.54% divergent thinking questions. Then, Science textbook C consists of 44.95% cognitive memory questions, 38.20% convergent thinking questions and 6.85% divergent thinking questions. Cognitive memory and convergent thinking questions are closed questions while divergent thinking and evaluative thinking questions are open questions. The conclusion is that the three books are dominated by closed questions and from the aspect of question distribution, Science textbook A and Science textbook B are only able to train students' critical thinking skills.
