Abstract

Breast cancer affects 2.1 million women every year and is the biggest cause of cancer death in women in the world. Therapy for breast cancer is one of them with chemotherapy. Adherence is required in undergoing treatment to avoid the progression and recurrence of the disease. This type of research is observational descriptive with consecutive sampling techniques. The sample of this study were breast cancer patients who underwent chemotherapy at RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin in September 2019 who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The instruments in this study were the Patient Compliance Questionnaire Undergoing Chemotherapy and the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) questionnaire. In this study, 49 breast cancer patients were the subjects of the study. The results of the study the most age group were 50-54 years with a percentage of 22.4% (n=11), the level of education was the secondary school 42.9% (n=21), and family income below the provincial minimum wage 57,1% (n=28). All subjects (n=49) had insurance and chemotherapy side effects. According to the assessment, there were 24.5% (n=12) were depressed, 91.8% (n=45) obedient and not compliant with treatment by 8.2% (n=4). The reason for compliant treatment is the desire to recover and family. Patients not complying is because of the distance of the house and the side effects. Five factors that influence the compliance of treatment are social and economic, health care team and system, condition, therapy, and patient-related factors.

Abstract

About 90% of cancer-related deaths are caused by distant metastases. Age at diagnosis and molecular subtypes can be used to predict the event of distant metastases. This study aims to determine age and location preference for distant metastases based on tumor molecular subtypes in breast cancer patients. This study was a descriptive observational study with a cross-sectional design. The sample in this study were breast cancer patients with distant metastases, both de novo and recurrent metastases, at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin for the period January - December 2018 who were recorded in the medical record and met the research criteria. There were 93 patients with distant metastatic breast cancer (17 patients with de novo metastases; 76 recurrent metastases). In the de novo and recurrent metastatic groups, most of the patients were ?40-60 years (52.9% and 67.1%). The most common sites of metastases were the lungs (34.4%) and bone (25.8%). Luminal A subtype metastasized dominantly to lungs (45%), luminal B to bone (34.1%), HER2-enriched to lungs (50%), and TNBC to lungs (57.4%) and liver (28.6%). The highest percentage of breast cancer patients with distant metastases in Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang was found in the age group ?40?60 years. The most common sites for metastases are lungs and bones. Most luminal A and HER2-enriched subtypes metastasized to lungs, luminal B to bone, and TNBC to lungs and liver. Abstract

Background: Breast-related new skin cancer cases have increased annually over the past decade. Current data on new skin cancer cases is essential as a preliminary step in preventing and reducing the incidence of new cases. This study aims to determine the incidence and characteristics of skin cancer patients at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital, Palembang, from 2019 to 2021.Methods: This observational descriptive study employed a cross-sectional design using total sampling. Data were obtained from the medical records of skin cancer patients at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital between January 2019 and December 2021. The variables analyzed included demographic characteristics (age, gender, occupation, education, marital status, and residence), cancer type, cancer stage, and tumor location. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics to determine the frequency and distribution of each variable. Results: The incidence and characteristics of skin cancer at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital were recorded in 38 patients. Basal cell carcinoma was the most common type, accounting for 44.74% of cases. Most patients were aged 45-64 years (52.6%), unemployed or housewives (65.8%), female (65.8%), had completed high school (44.7%), were married (89.5%), and resided outside Palembang (55.3%). Most cases were diagnosed at stage I (44.7%) and were primarily located in the head and neck region (76.3%). Early-stage diagnosis is associated with better survival rates, while advanced-stage cancers, are more aggressive and require prompt treatment for improved survival outcomes. Understanding these factors is crucial for optimizing patient management and resource allocation. Conclusions: The study shows basal cell carcinoma as the most common skin cancer at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital, with a higher incidence in females, especially those aged 45–64, unemployed or housewives, married, and living outside Palembang. Most cases were diagnosed early and located in the head and neck

Abstract

Epiphora, or excessive tearing, is a frequent yet under-recognised adverse effect of docetaxel, a taxane-based chemotherapeutic agent used in breast cancer treatment. Inflammatory and fibrotic changes within the lacrimal drainage system are hypothesised as the primary mechanisms. This study aimed to evaluate the correlation between docetaxel administration duration and epiphora severity, alongside the impact of cumulative dosage and patient age. A retrospective observational study was conducted at Mohammad Hoesin Hospital Palembang, involving 25 breast cancer patients who reported epiphora during docetaxel chemotherapy. Patients with pre-existing ocular conditions, prior lacrimal surgery, or concurrent use of epiphora-inducing medications were excluded. Epiphora severity was assessed using the Munk score, and statistical analyses included Pearson’s correlation and multiple regression. Findings demonstrated a strong positive correlation between epiphora severity and docetaxel duration (r = 0.645, p < 0.05), cumulative dosage (r = 0.618, p < 0.05), and patient age (r = 0.703, p < 0.05). Limitations include the retrospective design, small sample size, and subjective assessment tools. These results emphasise the importance of monitoring for epiphora during docetaxel therapy, with early ophthalmologic intervention recommended. Further prospective studies are needed to clarify pathophysiological mechanisms and optimise management strategies for chemotherapy-induced epiphora.

Abstract

Background: Breast cancer has a high prevalence in Indonesia, with many patients undergoing chemotherapy that impacts their daily lives. Measuring quality of life (QoL) is essential to capture physical, emotional, and social challenges, and the EORTC QLQ-C30 provides a validated tool for this purpose. This study aimed to assess the QoL of breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy at RS Mohammad Hoesin Palembang. Methods: This study used a descriptive observational method with a cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of 106 breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy at RS Mohammad Hoesin Palembang, with inclusion criteria of patients ≥ 18 years undergoing chemotherapy and exclusion of those with severe comorbidities or cognitive impairment. Data were collected through interviews using the EORTC QLQ-C30 questionnaire. Results: The study assessed the quality of life of breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy at RS Mohammad Hoesin Palembang using the EORTC QLQ-C30. The results showed that the average functional scale score was 78.6 ± 5.85, with the highest in emotional function (84.98 ± 9.27) and the lowest in role function (72.33 ± 18.77). On the symptom scale, the mean score was 57.88 ± 13.91, with constipation being the most reported symptom (74.75 ± 19.14), while insomnia and decreased appetite were the least reported (37.81 ± 11.90). The overall health status score averaged 77.56 ± 11.92. The highlight of this study is that although emotional functioning is relatively well-preserved, role limitations and physical symptoms, particularly constipation, substantially affect patients’ quality of life, underscoring the need for supportive care strategies during chemotherapyConclusions: The quality of life of breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, based on the EORTC QLQ-C30 results, indicates that the functional scale is better than the symptom scale and general health status. Routine and comprehensive quality of life assessments are essential for understanding the impact of treatment and improving the clinical management of patients.

Abstract

Background: Thyroid carcinoma is the most common endocrine malignancy, with its incidence continuously increasing annually. In Indonesia, thyroid cancer represents one of the highest prevalence malignancies, with cases projected to rise each year. This study aims to determine the risk factors associated with the incidence of thyroid carcinoma at Mohammad Hoesin Hospital, Palembang.Method: This study is a case-control observational analytic study using secondary medical record data of thyroid carcinoma patients as a case group and non-carcinoma patients as a control group in the Surgery Department of Mohammad Hoesin Hospital, Palembang, from January 2022 to December 2023, selected by simple random sampling. This study will process and analyze data using univariate analysis methods, bivariate analysis with the Chi-square test, and multivariate analysis with binary logistic regression using SPSS statistical software 29 version. Results: The study included 65 thyroid carcinoma patients as the case group and 65 non-carcinoma patients as the control group. Factors influencing thyroid carcinoma were gender (p 0.001), age (p 0.001), BMI (p 0.001), and history of thyroid disease (p 0.001). Conclusion: This study demonstrated a strong and statistically significant influence of gender, age, BMI, and a history of prior thyroid disease on the likelihood of developing thyroid cancer. These findings underscore the critical importance of these demographic and clinical factors in the risk assessment and screening of individuals for thyroid carcinoma in this population.
