Abstract

Japanese interjections (kandoushi) play an important role in expressing emotions, responses, and social relationships. While previous studies have examined kandoushi from grammatical, pragmatic, and semantic perspectives, little attention has been given to how gender-preferential language is represented through interjections in fictional discourse. This study investigates the use of Japanese interjections by female (ojousama) and male (oujisama) characters in the shoujo manga Akuyakureijoutte koto. Employing a descriptive qualitative method supported by simple quantitative analysis, the study analyzes 346 interjection utterances collected from Volumes 1–3 using the yakuwarigo framework. The findings reveal that all three categories of Japanese interjections—kandoushi (emotive), outoushi (response), and yobikakeshi (vocative)—are used by both genders; however, significant differences emerge in their frequency, lexical preferences, and contextual meanings. Female characters employ a wider variety of emotive interjections and express emotional nuances such as enthusiasm, satisfaction, and affectionate playfulness more frequently, whereas male characters predominantly use interjections associated with responses, calls, and situational awareness. These findings demonstrate that interjections function not only as emotional expressions but also as linguistic markers that construct gendered character identities within the yakuwarigo system in contemporary Japanese manga.

Abstract

<p>The Japanese language used in fictional work differs from the standard Japanese language. This language variety, which highlights the stereotypical qualities of a character, is called yakuwarigo or role language. Among the many types of role language, <em>aruyo kotoba</em> highlights the characteristics of a Japanese-speaking Chinese character. This study aims to describe the types and meaning of illocutionary act on <em>aruyo kotoba</em> utterances using the pragmatic theory. The source of the data is a manga titled Ranma 1/2 by Takahashi Rumiko which was first published in 1987. The research is conducted using note-see method for the data collection. Then, the theory of Koizumi (1993) is used to classify the data according to its illocutionary speech act types based on the context of the utterances. The result shows that there are 27 data of illocutionary act on <em>aruyo kotoba</em> in the manga of Ranma 1/2 with the aru and yoroshi ending in sentences, namely 4 data of assertive illocutionary act, 7 data of expressive illocutionary act, 2 data of comissive illocutionary act, and 14 data of directive illocutionary act. The meaning contained in the illocutionary acts are tell, emphasize, insult, complain, getting mad, compliment, insinuate, command, and request.</p> <a href="https://gb777info.com">gb777</a><a href="https://pajak.blitarkota.go.id/uploads/profile/">gb777</a><a href="https://baak.uika-bogor.ac.id/uploads/">slot gacor</a><a href="https://siadmin.baak.uika-bogor.ac.id/files/images/">gb777</a><a href="https://jdih.dprd-pemalangkab.go.id/">gb777</a><a href="https://disnakertrans.bungokab.go.id/">GB777</a><a href="https://jdih.bungokab.go.id/">GB777</a>slot gacorslot gacor

Abstract

This study aims to describe the phenomenon of defeminization in the use of Japanese Speech Style. The term defeminization in this study is adopted from Okamoto (1995, 1996), referring to the phenomenon of diminishing or devaluing an individual's feminine attributes. Defeminization not only occurs in role or yakuwarigo but also represents a widespread social phenomenon in Japanese society. In the anime Kusuriya no Hitorigoto season 1, defeminization is identified through the speech style of the main female character, Maomao. The data showed that Maomao does not use feminine forms, especially when using final particles, despite her gender. This study employed a sociolinguistic approach to examine the contextual meaning of Maomao's utterances that demonstrate defeminization, and it also considered Maomao's social interactions as a factor influencing her choice of speech style. Data was collected through recordings and transcriptions from Netflix. The research revealed that Maomao used vowel coalescence in -shitee (shitai), final sentence endings such as -dayo and -daro, command forms like -shiro), and terms like oyaji as an address form, which are recognized as non-feminine forms. Additionally, Maomao's birth circumstances and environment in Kusuriya no Hitorigoto contribute to the occurrence of defeminization.
