Abstract

Muslim communities in the Hindu-majority area of Bali have existed since the 15th century. Since that period, the interdependence between the two religious communities has been something inevitable. This study aims to enrich the treasures of the interdependence discourse that exists between Muslims and Hindus in Bali. It tries to trace the history and early development of Islam in Bali, the relation pattern between Muslims and Hindus, and local wisdom influencing the interdependence in Bali. Data for this study were obtained through observations and interviews with key figures in Klungkung, Bali. After profound analysis, the writer concludes that the emergence of Islam in Bali occurred when Dalem Ketut Ngelesir (1380-1460) visited Majapahit during the vassal royal conference in early 1380 and brought 40 Muslim escorts. This period also marked the early Hindus-Muslim relationship in Bali with Klungkung as the first area with the Muslim community. Later, the relationship between Hindus and Muslims was maintained in the four consecutive periods: kingdom, colonization, post-independence, and the present. Among the local wisdom that has influenced the interdependence and integration between the two religious communities are megibung, ngejot, and religious activities such as the birth of Prophet Muhammad SAW., Nyepi, odalan, takbiran, and Eid al-Fitr.

Abstract

STAI (Islamic Higher Education) Denpasar Bali is the only Islamic religious college in Denpasar City. As a university located among most of the Hindu community, this institution has a special course, namely memorizing section 30 of Al-Qur'an in Balinese translation, as a form of implementation of an ethnopedagogy approach. This study aims to describe the ethnopedagogy of STAI Denpasar Bali during section 30 of Al-Qur'an memorization in Balinese translation. This study used the descriptive qualitative method, and the data was collected through unstructured interviews with informants. For the informants, we involved the Head of STAI Denpasar Bali, the Head of the Academic Sector, the coordinator of memorizing section 30 of the Al-Qur'an course, the lecturer of the Al-Qur'an to Balinese translation course, students, relevant stakeholders, and Aswaja Dewata as well as the General Chair of the Indonesia Clerical Council (MUI) in Bali. Our findings suggested that 1) this course has only been implemented for two years since 2020 to participate in preserving local wisdom and symbols of the Islamic religion in Bali. In practice, this course consists of memorizing section 30 of Al-Qur'an, and translations in Balinese, which are carried out at different times and by different tutors, 2) Ethnopedagogy in the Qur'an section 30 translation course of Balinese language is taught by internalizing cultural values and language levels, and 3) actualization of Balinese language in the Qur'an section 30 Balinese language aim to recultivate the recently degraded Balinese language

Abstract

This study investigates the role of teachers in enhancing Quranic reading skills among sixth-grade students at Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Nurussalam, focusing on their roles as motivators and evaluators. Using a qualitative field approach, data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The research aims to understand how teachers contribute to improving students' Quranic reading skills, while examining their influence as motivators and evaluators. The findings indicate that teachers play a vital role in guiding students towards achieving the set goals for Quranic reading. As motivators, teachers encourage students by offering rewards or points for each achievement, creating a positive learning atmosphere that promotes continuous improvement. These incentives enhance students' enthusiasm and engagement in learning. In addition to motivating students, teachers also serve as evaluators. They assess students’ Quranic reading abilities through regular evaluations, which help determine the effectiveness of teaching methods and students’ progress. This evaluative role is essential in identifying areas where students need further assistance and adjusting teaching strategies accordingly. Evaluations also provide teachers with insights into the students' learning outcomes, enabling them to refine their approach. Furthermore, the evaluation process allows teachers to prepare comprehensive reports on students' progress, which are shared with parents and school administrators. These reports play an important role in ensuring students receive the necessary support. Overall, the study highlights the critical role of teachers as both motivators and evaluators in improving Quranic reading skills and fostering effective learning at Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Nurussalam

Abstract

Despite legal assurances of equal rights and access to healthcare, discrimination and stigma hinder the fulfillment of these rights, impacting employment opportunities and societal integration, particularly for individuals with mental disabilities. The global economic burden of mental health issues underscores the urgency of addressing disparities in access to healthcare services, especially for individuals with mental disabilities. This research is then dedicated to analyzing how accessible to health services for individuals with mental disabilities based on the local integrated services model; and how do rural communities accept individuals with mental disabilities after participating in routine local integrated services, named Posyandu Jiwa in Indonesia, for mental health activities. The research method used is qualitative with a phenomenological approach. We conducted this research in the Inclusive Village program in Gianyar Regency, namely Suwat Village, Sumita Village, Petak Kaja Village, and Singapadu Village.

Abstract

The Yanbu’ul Qur’an Observatory in Menawan Kudus, Indonesia, functions as a site for crescent moon (rukyat al-hilāl) observations and Islamic astronomy education. Despite conducting various observation activities, successful hilāl sighting has only occurred during Zulhijjah 1443 H, primarily due to light pollution, limited horizon clarity, and low contrast between the moon and the horizon. This field study analyzes primary data on observatory infrastructure, horizon conditions, sky brightness, and climatological factors, along with secondary data from observation records (2022–2023). The findings indicate two key points: (1) the observatory significantly supports astronomy education at the Yanbu’ul Qur’an Islamic Boarding School, and (2) it is moderately feasible for hilāl observation based on parameters from the Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics (BMKG), including favorable westward orientation, minimal obstructions, elevated location, low light pollution, and reliable electricity and internet access.

Abstract

Abstract: This study analyzes the effectiveness of legal protections for Sharia sukuk investors in Indonesia, particularly in the Sukuk Tabungan ST012 instrument, based on the newly issued Financial Services Authority (OJK) Regulation No. 22 of 2023. The research is under a normative legal method combined with conceptual analysis using the Maqāṣid Ash-Sharīʿah framework developed by Auda. The findings indicate that the regulation introduces key elements such as strengthened literacy, transparency, and governance. However, the regulation’s effectiveness remains limited in safeguarding investor capital, ensuring rational decision-making, and providing psychological security. The Maqāṣid-based analysis reveals that the dimension of ḥifẓ al-māl (protection of wealth) is not yet fully integrated into policy design. A comparative analysis with Malaysia highlights Indonesia’s structural weaknesses, particularly the non-binding nature of fatwa authorities and the lack of legal certainty in Sharia supervision. This study recommends strengthening Sharia authority systems and integrating Maqāṣid values into the national regulatory framework. The study is limited by its non-empirical approach and narrow focus on a single instrument. Future research could consider quantitative methods and undertake broader cross-country regulatory comparisons.

Abstract

AbstractThe delivery of Islamic Religious Education (PAI) in Bali has been fraught with difficulties, which have been exacerbated by the pandemic. This paper discusses 1) the realities of Islamic religious education in Bali, 2) the implementation of a special condition curriculum as a means of humanizing PAI education, and 3) the humanization of Islamic religious education in Bali during the COVID-19 pandemic. This research employed a qualitative phenomenological study, with data gathered through in-depth interviews with school principals, Islamic Religious Education teachers, and Muslim students' parents. The data is handled in stages that include data reduction, visualization, and verification. The findings indicate that: 1) The ratio of Islamic Religious Education teachers to pupils is imbalanced; some schools even lack Islamic Religious Education teachers, and numerous parents express dissatisfaction with online learning in PAI sessions. 2 ) Curriculum implementation for special/emergency situations; some schools have implemented it as a means of increasing learning effectiveness and efficiency, while others continue to use the national curriculum, despite teacher recognition that it is unproductive. 3) The special education curriculum is considered one of the first steps toward humanizing Religious Education Islam, which, in the face of poor online learning, must also be accompanied by teachers who are accessible to parents and students. How to Cite: Ramdhani, F. Abstract

This study explores the dynamics of religious expression among young Muslim women in Bali within the context of socio-cultural diversity and the challenges of being a minority. Bali, as a global tourism destination, has a history of Muslim communities dating back to the 14th century coexisting with the Hindu majority. The research employs a descriptive-qualitative method, utilizing participant observation, in-depth interviews, focus group discussions (FGDs), and document analysis. Primary data were collected from young Muslim women, community leaders, and Islamic youth organizations in Bali. The results reveal that young Muslim women face significant challenges, including religious discrimination, social pressure in expressing their faith, limited access to religious education, difficulties in obtaining halal food, and religious conversion due to marital pressures. On the other hand, they utilize social media as a new space to express their religious identities. In interfaith interactions, young Muslim women demonstrate adaptability to local norms while facing tensions between religious identity and social demands. Theoretically, this research enriches the discourse on the relationship between identity, religious minorities, and religious expression in multicultural contexts such as Bali.
