Abstract

The Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa, a yellow passion fruit, is known for its distinctive aroma and tart flavor. The pulp of the yellow passion fruit can be used to make tea, jam, and syrup commercially. Commercial items are processed using oven heating, which involves prolonged exposure to high temperatures. As a result, fruit content, particularly water content, may alter. The benefit of reducing the water content is that less microbial growth medium means the product has a longer shelf life. However, fruit flesh’s nutritional composition will also change due to the ascorbic acid and phenolic compounds' thermolability and other factors. In this study, the yellow passion fruit pulp juice is heated in a controlled manner at 60°C, 70°C, and 80°C for 7 hours using an oven. The purpose is to assess changes in the amounts of ascorbic acid and total phenol that occurred. A paired T-test was used to assess the association between weight loss, ascorbic acid levels, and phenolic levels in the control and treatment groups. The amount of ascorbic acid was determined using the 2.6 dichloroindophenol titrimetry method, and the amount of phenol was determined using the Folin-Cioceltau method and UV-Vis spectrophotometry. According to this study, increasing the temperature to 60 °C or 80 °C significantly reduces weight and ascorbic acid levels. Also, the heating temperature unaffected the amount of phenol in each group.

Abstract

The Indonesian government recommended sunbathing for 15 to 30 minutes in the morning to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic. Exposure to sunlight will activate the formation of vitamin D, which the body needs for defense against Covid-19 infection. However, excessive sun exposure will cause skin problems, including psoriasis, sarcoidosis, sunburn to skin cancer. One of the protections against sun exposure is the use of sunscreen. Sunscreen protects the skin from UV exposure by two mechanisms, namely, absorbing UV rays or reflecting UV rays. Sunscreen has various dosage forms that are tailored to the needs of consumers. Several dosage forms are preferred because they are easy to use and can be used in groups of children. Sunscreen protection is stated using a photoprotector claim in the form of an SPF value or other claims that support the function of sunscreen. Although SPF has been used worldwide, there are several standard claims for the effectiveness of sunscreens in several countries, such as the broad spectrum and UVA-PA (PA+ to PA++++) claims.

Abstract

The Bajakah root (Spatholobus littoralis), a native plant of Kalimantan, is recognized for its phenolic content and antioxidant activity. This study aims to compare the effects of three extraction methods—maceration, soxhlet, and reflux—on the total phenolic content and antioxidant activity of Bajakah root extracts. The plant material was extracted using 96% ethanol, followed by phenolic content analysis via the Folin-Ciocalteu method and antioxidant activity evaluation using the DPPH assay. Results revealed that the reflux method produced the highest phenolic content (17.6 ± 0.1 mg GAE/g extract) and the strongest antioxidant activity (IC50 of 26 ± 1 µg/mL). The soxhlet method yielded a phenolic content of 17.4 ± 0.2 mg GAE/g extract with an IC50 of 30 ± 0 µg/mL, while maceration resulted in the lowest phenolic content (14.6 ± 0.7 mg GAE/g extract) and an IC50 of 34 ± 2 µg/mL. The heating processes involved in the reflux and Soxhlet methods likely facilitated the degradation of glycosides, thereby enhancing phenolic content. All methods demonstrated exceptionally strong antioxidant activity (IC50 < 50 µg/mL). This study underscores the significant influence of extraction methods on the phenolic quality and antioxidant capacity of Bajakah root extracts.

Abstract

Abstract

Pneumonia, a severe respiratory disease, can have deadly consequences. Increased air pollution in Jakarta can increase the risk of respiratory tract diseases, including Pneumonia. The risk of Pneumonia infection in adults can be reduced by vaccination. The Pharmacy Department of the Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia held an in-depth seminar on Pneumonia and vaccination to provide information and invite all people to understand the urgency of vaccination. Educational activities are conducted as online seminars using a video conferencing platform. Two speakers gave interactively educational information about Pneumonia and vaccination, and more than 60 people attended the seminar. Demographic data on participants shows that the gender of most participants was female, the age of most participants was 26-45 years old, and the education level of most participants was university level. Of the participants who attended, as many as 63.7% had never been vaccinated against Pneumonia, and 68.1% were willing to be vaccinated against Pneumonia. In conclusion, this seminar successfully increased the knowledge and awareness of the public about Pneumonia and vaccination.
