Abstract

Deconstruction plays a significant role in literary analysis as a method of approaching distinct works by querying their original objectives. The Devil Wears Prada is a 2006 film that was adapted from Lauren Weisberger's 2003 book of the same name. The protagonist, Andrea Sachs, a 20-something woman, is following her dream of becoming a journalist by working as Miranda Priestly's assistant. This study aimed to describe the deconstruction of female empowerment on the two main characters of the movie The Devil Wears Prada, namely Miranda Priestly and Andrea Sachs. It was qualitative research with a critical discourse analysis approach. The researchers examined the movie and the screenplay to find elements supporting the female empowerment deconstruction in the two characters. The findings of this study elaborated the deconstruction of female empowerment in Miranda’s character and in Andrea’s character. The deconstruction of female empowerment in Miranda’s character shows that Miranda does not represent the idea of female empowerment. With her material and professional success, she seems to represent the notion but in a conventional way. Meanwhile, female empowerment is challenged with the Derrida’s theory and redefined through Andrea’s character. Andrea established herself as an empowered woman who shows integrity and makes unconventional significant decisions in her life. She also can take control and empower other people in the working place by showing sympathy to her colleagues including Miranda when her career was threatened.

Abstract

Family is the smallest scope but has a huge impact on a person's literacy development. This research aims to potray the literacy practices of families who come from two different SES categories, middle-upper SES and lower SES. This research used a qualitative descriptive research design. Data was collected by conducting semistructured interviews. Meanwhile, parents from lower SES tend to prioritize formal literacy such as introducing letters, teaching spelling, and numbers. Furthermore, in families with middle-upper SES background, both fathers and mothers are actively involved in home literacy activities. Meanwhile, Meanwhile, in families with lower SES backgrounds, gaps in parental involvement in family literacy practices were found. Abstract

Community Skills Training Centers (BLKK) were initiated and established by the Indonesian Ministry of Manpower and Cooperatives by providing initial facilities in terms of infrastructure and programs funded directly by the government. Several BLKKs in Region II of West Java were developed in Islamic boarding schools (pesantren). In 2024, BLKK was encouraged to develop and expand its businesses by establishing business incubators. In doing so, this effort was mentored and facilitated by UIN Siber Syekh Nurjati Cirebon throughout 2024. This paper examines the achievements of mentoring community-based BLKKs in Region II of West Java in developing business incubators to expand their businesses. The research for this paper was conducted qualitatively, with informants consisting of BLKK program implementers and mentors. The analysis was conducted using an evaluation scheme based on the business incubator roadmap developed by the Indonesian Ministry of Manpower. The results of this study show that, firstly, there is a need for the development of UMKM businesses run by BLKKs towards business incubators to expand their businesses, although they face challenges such as a lack of financial support, a lack of awareness among potential tenants, and a lack of government support. Secondly, business incubators play an important role in supporting the development of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and tenants in Indonesia. Case studies at Community Skills Training Centers show that business incubators not only provide skills training but also help MSMEs and tenants access technology, improve human resource quality, and gain broader market access. BLKK incubators serve as intermediaries between MSMEs and the industrial world, enabling the creation of collaborations relevant to local market needs. Business incubation also helps to overcome the main challenges faced by MSMEs, such as limited capital, limited access to technology, and challenges in facing digital transformation.

Abstract

Generally, Indonesian students need to improve their literacy. According to the 2022 PISA study results, 70% of Indonesian students are below the minimum literacy competency level. It shows Indonesia's standard student literacy level is still at level 2 PISA. Therefore, this study aims to develop EFL digital literacy resources that can assist learners in improving their literacy skills. This research is an research and development (R&D) study using the ADDIE method. The data was obtained from literature review analysis regarding website characteristics and MCA (Minimum Competency Assessment) literacy questions. The analysis results show there are eight characteristics of an excellent website for learning that should be considered when developing literacy resources, and MCA questions can be used to measure students' literacy levels. In the design and development stages, the website was developed based on the characteristics of a good website obtained in the analysis stage. Following the MCA model, the website contains fiction and nonfiction text that can foster creativity and critical thinking skills. By using interactive features and appealing visuals, a fun and educational literacy experience is created for students. Keywords: digital learning resources, literacy, MCA, reading resources,

Abstract

The vast benefits of reading in both the first and the target language makes reading essential for English Language Teaching Department students who are not only English language learners but also English teacher candidates. This study explores English student teachers’ reading habits and preferences. An open-ended and closed-ended questionnaire and interviews were used to collect information on 88 English student teachers’ reading habits and preferences. The participants’ reading habits were predicted by their attitudes towards reading, reading frequency, and reading material preferences. The findings suggest that although student teachers mostly displayed positive attitudes towards reading and acknowledged the importance of reading, they didn’t really invest in personal reading. In terms of reading preferences, most of the student teachers chose fiction books and online materials as the most preferred reading materials. When it comes to language preferences, most of them preferred to read in their first language (Indonesian) instead of the language they are currently learning (English) for both academic reading and reading for pleasure.
