Abstract

Abstract

Leukocyte count examination is an examination that is often performed in clinical laboratories. Leukocyte count examination can be performed using a hematology analyzer or counting chamber for manual methods. Leukocyte cell counting using the manual method must use a standardized counting chamber. Currently, a different type of Improved Neubauer counting chamber variation has been found from the standard type, namely the difference in the outer limit of the counting area. In the standard type counting chamber, the outer limit of the counting area has three lines, while in the variation type counting chamber there is only one line. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there was a difference in the dividing line of the Improved Neubauer counting chamber on the suitability of the leukocyte count between the standard Improved Neubauer counting chamber type and the variation type Improved Neubauer counting chamber. The research design used in this study was observational analytic (Cross-Sectional) with a sample size of 20 EDTA blood. The results of the study obtained normally distributed data. then the Dependent Parametric Test (Paired T-Test) was carried out with a confidence level of 95%. The results of the Paired T-test showed the Sig.(2-tailed) value was 0.000 (<0.05). The conclusion of the study was that there was a significant difference in the results of the leukocyte count between the use of the standard Improved Neubauer counting chamber and the variation Improved Neubauer counting chamber. The use of the standard Improved Neubauer counting chamber is more recommended than the variation Improved Neubauer counting chamber.

Abstract

Anemia is a condition of reduced number or volume of erythrocytes or hemoglobin (Hb) molecules. This condition can be characterized by a decrease in Hb concentration. Based on data from the Ministry of Health, the prevalence of anemia in teenagers (15-24 years) has increased from 18.4% to 32% from 2013 until 2018. Anemia in teenagers can have an impact on decreasing productivity or academic abilities at school because there is a decrease in student concentration, and they don't feel enthusiasm for learning. This community service activity aims to find out the percentage of students in M.H Thamrin Senior High School who have anemia. The method of community service activities is carried out by examining Hb levels, anemia education, giving blood supplement tablets to students with low Hb levels, and evaluating Hb levels after education and giving the supplement. The results of the examination showed that the Hb levels in 24 female students ranged from 10.1 – 19.2 g/dL, with an average Hb level of 14.5 g/dL. Hb levels in 17 male students ranged from 14.7 – 19.7 g/dL, with an average Hb level of 16.6 g/dL. There were 3 female students (7,3%) who had Hb Levels below the normal value, and 13 students (31,7%) with Hb levels above the normal value. The results of anemia education show an increase in knowledge about anemia among all student participants, with an average score of 72,7 before education and an average score of 96,5 after education. This activity concluded that almost all students had normal Hb levels. However, after being given education and blood supplements and vitamins, two students with low Hb levels have an increase in Hb Levels.

Abstract

Tuberculosis (TB) is still a global health problem that exists today. Various efforts to reduce the number of TB patients have been carried out ranging from detection efforts to treatment and prevention efforts. Many studies have been conducted previously to look at the detection potential of laboratory diagnoses in finding new cases of tuberculosis. Likewise, efforts to detect prognosis in the laboratory to monitor the development of the condition of TB patients. The development of inflammatory conditions in TB patients is important to accelerate the healing process of these patients. Inflammatory marker tests have been widely performed on several types of laboratory test parameters. CRP and LDH are types of testing that have potential as markers of inflammatory development in TB patients. However, proven tests generally use blood specimens, which are commonly used in laboratory analysis for these parameters. Meanwhile, the current research theme has also been directed at the use of other types of specimens that can show inflammatory conditions experienced by a person. Saliva is known to have potential as another alternative specimen that can be used for such purposes. Saliva is easily obtained and does not require invasive techniques such as needle invocation, so it is considered to have more advantages if it can be proven as a laboratory test specimen that can provide information that is as good and accurate as blood or serum. This study aimed to assess the potential of saliva as an alternative specimen for laboratory analysis with the aim of markers in the assessment of prognosis of TB patients. CRP examination and LDH enzyme activity were chosen in this study of serum and saliva specimens of TB subjects and controls. From this study, it is expected to be shown that saliva can be used as an alternative specimen in laboratory analysis for inflammatory marker tests on both parameters. The results obtained showed that the measurement of LDH activity and and CRP levels in saliva observed in this study proved to have good potential in predicting the presence of inflammation and cell damage experienced by TB subjects. LDH test results have a strong relationship between serum and saliva as laboratory test materials, even salivary LDH levels are higher than serum. While CRP, although saliva showed low levels, the correlation test carried out still showed a strong relationship between the results of the two types of specimens.
