Abstract

Periodontal disease can be caused by plaque bacteria. The plaque layer on the surface of the teeth is a biofilm containing an accumulation of microorganisms, including pathogenic bacteria, Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans. Bromelain is an enzyme produced by pineapples (Ananas comosus L.Merr) and is found in higher concentrations in the core. The ability of bromelain to break down proteins inhibits the formation of bacterial cell membranes. Objective: To determine the antibacterial activity of pineapple core extract (Ananas comosus L. Merr) against Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans. Research Method: This study is an in vitro laboratory experimental study. The study design used was a post-test only control group design. The study sample was Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans bacteria obtained from the Microbiology Laboratory of the Faculty of Medicine, Airlangga University, Surabaya. Results : The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) value was 0.78%, and the Minimum Bacterial Concentration (MBC) value was 6.25%. Conclusion: The pineapple stem extract (Ananas comosuis L. Meirr) exhibits potential antibacterial activity against the bacterial strain Aggregatibacterium actinomycetemcomitans.

Abstract

Simpulan: Terdapat efek analgesik ekstrak daun Trembesi (Samanea saman (Jacq.) Merr.) pada mencit putih (Mus Musculus).

Abstract

Perception of oral hygiene has a major impact on life expectancy worldwide, but in middle-income countries it is a problem, where oral health problems in Indonesia affect as much as 57.6% of the population. A semi-experimental study was conducted on October 30, 2024 on students at Al-Marusiyah Elementary School, Kediri City, East Java, Indonesia. The study method was carried out offline (face-to-face) using a mixture of presentation media (power point) and booklets. The socialization participants were divided into two parts: pre-socialization (pre-test) and post-socialization (post-test). The socialization participants were given questions to assess their knowledge and perceptions of oral health before and after the socialization. Participants' knowledge was classified as sufficient, moderate, and low in understanding oral hygiene before and after the socialization. This counseling was carried out as part of a collaboration between the Faculty of Dentistry (FKG) of the Bhakti Wiyata Institute of Health Sciences (IIK) and the Faculty of Dentistry (FKG) of the University of Sains Malaysia (USIM). This counseling aims to improve dental health knowledge of students at Al-Marusiyah Elementary School so that it is hoped that it can reduce the DMF-t rate in students at Al-Marusiyah Elementary School. Keywords: Dental health; Oral health; Elementary school students; Faculty of Dentistry Institute Health Science Bhakti Wiyata; Faculty of Dentistry Universiti Sains Malaysia.

Abstract

Abstract: Periodontal disease often begins with inflammation caused by bacteria in the oral cavity, such as Porphyromonas gingivalis. One of the herbal ingredients known for its antibacterial properties is shallot (Allium cepa L.). Shallots contain various secondary metabolites, including saponin, flavonoid, alkaloid, triterpenoid, and tannin. This study aimed to obtain the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of shallot extract. This was an experimental laboratory design using a post-test only control group approach. The test organism used was Porphyromonas gingivalis. Shallots were extracted using the maceration method, followed by serial dilution to obtain concentrations of 100%, 50%, 25%, 12.5%, 6.25%, 3.125%, 1.56%, 0.78%, and a negative control. The results showed that at concentrations of 100%, 50%, 25%, and 12.5%, there was no growth of Porphyromonas gingivalis was observed. However, bacterial growth was present at concentrations of 6.25%, 3.125%, 1.56%, 0.78%, and in the negative control group. In conclusion, the minimum inhibitory concentration was found to be 0.78%, while the minimum bactericidal concentration was 12.5%. Abstract

Mental health is an integral component in maintaining physiological homeostasis, including the structure and function of oral tissues. Disorders such as stress and depression can trigger biological alterations through activation of the autonomic nervous system, increased cortisol secretion, and reduced mucosal immunity. Objective : This study aims to analyze the relationship between mental health disorders and oral biological responses based on the latest scientific evidence. Methods : A literature review of scientific articles published between 2020 and 2025, obtained from the PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar databases, focusing on oral manifestations such as bruxism, xerostomia, and periodontitis. Result : revealed that psychological distress correlates with increased periodontal inflammation, salivary dysfunction, and immune dysregulation within the oral cavity. These findings confirm the physiological connection between mental health and oral biological function, which requires understanding within an interdisciplinary framework.
