Abstract

Applying STEAM-based learning methods is challenging for early childhood (EC) educators because most of them need help to develop media and learning activities. This study aims to improve EC teachers' proficiency in implementing STEAM learning methods with loose-part materials through project-based learning (PjBL) models. This action research uses the Elliot model, which consists of 7 steps: initial idea identification, fact analysis, general planning, implementation, observation, evaluation, and idea improvement. The participants in this study were 15 preschool teachers from different institutions in Langsa, Aceh. Data collection techniques used observation and the instruments consisted of observation sheets and project assessment sheets. The results showed that the average score of teacher competence in cycles one and two increased. 80% of the total 15 teachers have reached the minimum success indicator. Therefore, the PjBL method is concluded to improve the competence of EC teachers in implementing STEAM method learning with loose parts. From the results of this study, it is hoped that teachers can apply it in their respective institutions to provide more comprehensive benefits to students. This study suggests that early childhood institutions should help EC teachers implement the STEAM-based loose parts. Further research can be conducted in ECE on the extend of STEAM implementation.

Abstract

Earth and space science can be learned early with interesting learning methods and media. However, some early childhood institutions must provide attractive and interactive media for learning science. This research aims to develop learning media for children to understand the concepts of earth and space science. This research uses a Research and Development (R&D) approach with tool development & use type of Richey & Klein model consisting of 4 steps: analysis, design, development, and evaluation. The results of the validation of media, language, and early childhood education experts indicate that the learning media named 'galaxy gift' is feasible to develop and become interactive media to increase children's understanding of earth and space science. Field trials show that this media help children to understand about earth and space science concepts and motivate children to learn science. Therefore, this media is very effective as a science learning media for children. For the effectiveness of improving other science concepts in early childhood, further research can be conducted.

Abstract

An introduction to preventing the transmission of diseases is not only essential during a pandemic because viruses are the closest part of the children. However, this is not easy to teach in early childhood, which is in a substantial period; interesting methods are needed and accepted by children's logic. This study aimed to describe the process of introducing ways to prevent disease transmission in children through learning methods based on Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM). This qualitative research method was presented with a descriptive approach. Informants in this study were teachers who teach children aged 5-6 years at TPA Gampong Daulat, Langsa, Aceh. Researchers collected data through observation techniques. The data were analyzed in three stages: data reduction, data presentation and conclusion drawing. The results showed that the STEAM-based learning method was integrated into the concept and practice of health protocols. Ways of transmitting diseases caused by viruses in the form of washing hands, wearing masks, and keeping a distance taught based on the STEAM method make children actively involved and think logically and critically. The effectiveness of the STEAM-based learning method in teaching other aspects of health can be studied further.
