Abstract

Abstract

Abstract. Mathematical modeling is the process of mathematizing real-life problems into mathematical language. Modeling assessment is conducted to evaluate student learning outcomes at the end of the learning process and to gather information on students’ abilities, guiding teaching strategies. The lack of teacher competence in preparing mathematical modeling assessments and students' struggles in mathematical modeling result from a lack of experience in connecting mathematical concepts with real-life problems. This service activity aims to provide training for mathematics teachers in developing assessments based on mathematical modeling to enhance students' AKM. It also aims to understand the response of MGMP mathematics teachers to the training and to obtain high-quality learning tools based on mathematical modeling. The model for implementing this activity is a mentoring model designed to enhance teacher professionalism in preparing teaching and learning activities, particularly in creating digitally assisted learning tools. A total of 22 participants from Ogan Komering Ilir Regency took part in this activity, conducted synchronously and asynchronously. The analysis of the satisfaction response questionnaire revealed positive results in terms of relevance, material attractiveness, practicality, program design, feedback, and recommendations.

Abstract

This study focused on developing student worksheet (SW) based on philosophy on the topic of matrix operations, including an overview of its effect on students' conceptual understanding abilities of grade XI at Senior High School (SMA in Bahasa) IT Bina Ilmi Palembang. It discussed how the student worksheet produced could be valid, practical, and had potential effects. The method used was development research consisting of preliminary, prototyping and assessment phase stages. This student worksheet consisted of the history of the matrix (ontology), matrix operation procedures (epistemology) and implementation of the matrix (axiology). The results showed that the validity of the student worksheet amounted to 84.1% with a valid category and could be used with minor revisions. The practicality score at the small group stage was 87.8% with a very practical category. Statistical results showed that there was an increase in the average score of a significant test result of 59.06. This showed that there was a positive effect from the use of philosophy-based SW on students' conceptual understanding. Based on these results, the philosophy-based student worksheet developed was categorized as valid, practical, and effective in improving students' conceptual understanding ability on matrix material. Abstract

Background: The development of critical thinking skills in prospective mathematics teachers is essential for their future effectiveness in the classroom. Understanding how these individuals process and resolve problems that contain contradictory information provides insight into their critical thinking abilities. Previous research has highlighted the significant role of prior knowledge in problem-solving and critical thinking.Aim: This study aims to explore the critical thinking processes of prospective mathematics teachers when faced with problems that contain contradictory information. Specifically, it seeks to determine the influence of prior knowledge on their ability to navigate and resolve these complex problems. Methods:  The study employed a sequential explanatory design. Initially, quantitative data from prerequisite skill and critical thinking tests (specifically, problems with contradictory information) were collected from 68 participants. Simple regression analysis informed the selection of six participants (two each with high, medium, and low prerequisite abilities) for the subsequent qualitative phase. In-depth interviews and problem-solving tasks were conducted, prompting participants to articulate their thought processes. Data analysis focuses on identifying patterns and themes in their use of prior knowledge and critical thinking strategies. Results: The findings reveal that prior knowledge plays a pivotal role in how prospective mathematics teachers approach and resolve problems with contradictory information. Those with a strong foundation in mathematical concepts and problem-solving strategies are better equipped to identify inconsistencies and develop logical solutions. Conversely, participants with limited prior knowledge struggle to reconcile conflicting information and often resort to less effective problem-solving methods. Conclusion: This study underscores the importance of prior knowledge in the development of critical thinking skills among prospective mathematics teachers. Educator preparation programs should emphasize the cultivation of a robust knowledge base and provide opportunities for students to engage in complex problem-solving tasks. By doing so, future teachers will be better prepared to navigate the challenges of the classroom and foster critical thinking in their own students.
