Abstract

Prediabetes is a condition of impaired blood glucose metabolism. However, it does not yet meet the criteria for diabetes mellitus, characterized by impaired fasting blood glucose (FBG) levels and the Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT). Chronic glucose intolerance can increase the workload of the kidney glomerulus in the filtration process and the tubules in the reabsorption process. The research aims to assess the Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR) in prediabetic subjects in Kendari. This type of analytical observational research with a case-control design. The total sample was 90 samples consisting of 45 non-diabetic samples as the control group and 45 prediabetic samples as the case group. Characteristic data is presented as a frequency distribution and test data for differences between the control group and cases using an independent t-test with statistical test results said to be significant if the p-value is less than 0.05. The research results showed that the frequency distribution of subjects in the control group and cases based on gender was dominated by women, with the most extensive age range being 36-55 years. The FBG variable in the control group had a mean of 94±5.31 mg/dL, and in the case group, 110±8.09 mg/dL. The OGTT value in the control group was 118±12.78 mg/dL, and the case group was 139±23.90 mg/dL. The results of the calculation of the GFR showed a mean of 98.63±14.28 mL/min/1.73 m2 in the control group and 50.10±16.34 mL/min/1.73 m2 in the case group, different significant (p equal 0.000). There was a significant difference between GFR in the control group and the prediabetes case group. The results of the GFR assessment in the prediabetes group showed a mild decrease in renal function.

Abstract

Low high density lipoprotein level is one of the dyslipidemia conditions that can increase the risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver. Public knowledge about the different functions of fat components, especially HDL, is important to reduce the incidence of fatty liver including other complications such as metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular-related diseases. This activity aims to educate the public about the function of HDL as well as determine the HDL levels of each individual. This activity involved a team of lecturers, students of Poltekkes Kemenkes Kendari, media and 40 community members of Awila Village, Molawe District, North Konawe Regency as participants. This activity includes education, interactive discussions and checking community HDL levels. From the results of the activity, the post-education post-test results increased to 65% from 45% in the pre-test. The HDL level check showed that 55% of the participants had low HDL levels. Educational activities regarding the protective function and food sources high in HDL still need to be done in the community to improve the mindset related to fat and increase public awareness of the complications caused by the disease.

Abstract

Infectious diseases remain a major public health concern due to their high morbidity and mortality rates, including conditions such as cardiovascular diseases, cancer, chronic respiratory diseases, and diabetes mellitus. Cardiovascular disease and diabetes are strongly associated with central obesity, dyslipidemia, elevated fasting blood glucose, and hypertension. Metabolic syndrome is defined as a constellation of complex metabolic abnormalities that significantly increases the risk of developing cardiovascular disease and type II diabetes mellitus. The key components implicated in the pathogenesis of metabolic syndrome include hypertension, central obesity, insulin resistance, and atherogenic dyslipidemia. This study aimed to educate the community about metabolic syndrome while simultaneously conducting early detection. The screening procedures included measurements of blood pressure, waist circumference, blood glucose levels, the measurement of total cholesterol, triglycerides, and low density lipoprotein (LDL) levels was performed using the Point of Care Testing (POCT) method. A total of 52 respondents participated in this activity, consisting of 57.7% (n=30) females and 42.3% (n=22) males. The results indicated that 92.3% (n=48) had normal blood glucose levels, 100% (n=52) had normal total cholesterol, and 21.2% (n=11) had normal LDL levels. Normal blood pressure was observed in 34.6% (n=18), while 67.3% (n=35) were found to have central obesity. Overall, 9.6% (n=5) of respondents were diagnosed with metabolic syndrome, whereas 90.4% (n=47) were not. Most respondents demonstrated metabolic risk factors such as hypertension, central obesity, and elevated LDL levels, despite having normal blood glucose and total cholesterol. These findings underscore the importance of continuous public health education and targeted interventions to prevent and reduce the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in the community.

Abstract

Mortality and morbidity rates of hepatocellular carcinoma continue to rise worldwide. The role of inflammation, regulation of glucose metabolism, and anemia is widely studied concerning the development and life expectancy of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma. In several cancers, efforts to develop Pogostemon cablin benth plant potential drug candidates for hepatocellular carcinoma have been carried out at metabolomic, proteomic, and molecular levels. However, no studies have been found regarding the study of anti-inflammatory effects, metabolism, and anemic conditions of Pogostemon cablin benth intervention in hepatocellular carcinoma. This study is a pre-post experimental in-vivo study aimed at looking at the ability of Pogostemon cablin benth extract against interleukin-6 (IL-6) as an inflammatory marker, blood glucose levels as a marker of metabolic regulation and hemoglobin and hematocrit levels at as markers of anemia in hepatocellular carcinoma. A model of hepatocellular carcinoma was performed in 25 peritoneal-induced diethylnitrosamine-induced Wistar rats. The mice were divided into five groups, namely group 1 (K1), group 2 (K2), group 3 (K3), positive control (KP), and negative control (KN). Pogostemon cablin benth ethanol extract was administered orally to mice K1 40mg/kg body weight; K2:80mg/kg rat body weight; K3:120mg/kg body weight, while the positive control group was given Sorafenib. Interleukin-6 levels were measured using the enzyme-linked immunoassay principle, while glucose, hemoglobin, and hematocrit levels were measured using the enzymatic principle of glucose dehydrogenase-flavin adenine dinucleotide (GDH-FAD). The study showed no difference in blood glucose levels of mice between pre- and post-induction diethylnitrosamine. Induction of diethylnitrosamine obtained significantly led to a significant decrease in hemoglobin levels (15.54 g/dl ±1.28 vs. 14.31 g/dl ±1.11) and hematocrit (45.83% ±3.77 vs 42.20% ±3.25) levels between pre and post-induction. Mice in group 1 (K1) showed a significant increase in blood glucose levels between pre and post-oral Pogostemon cablin benth extract (p<0.05). There was no significant difference in hemoglobin and hematocrit levels in the treatment group between pre-intervention Pogostemon cablin benth extract. However, KN that did not receive Pogostemon cablin benth extract intervention significantly decreased hemoglobin and hematocrit levels (p<0.01). Decreased levels of the pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-6 occurred in K2 (p<0.05) after receiving oral Pogostemon cablin benth extract intervention. Based on this study, Pogostemon cablin benth extract may decrease IL-6 levels and is thought to influence hemoglobin and hematocrit levels in diethylnitrosamine-induced Wistar rats.

Abstract

Diabetic wounds are one of the neurovascular complications of diabetes. Hyperglycemia complicates the healing of diabetic wounds, which are susceptible to infection and chronic inflammation. Topical treatment using herbal extracts aims to reduce the side effects of surrounding tissue damage. A topical ointment made from ethanol extract of Patiwala (Lantana camara) leaves, which has been tested for product quality, has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects that has been proven to help accelerate the healing of diabetic wounds in rats through parameters such as reduced wound diameter, changes in the number of fibroblast cells, and collagen fiber formation seen in the histological profile during 21 days of therapy with a concentration of 15% (p>0.05) compared to the positive control of 10% betadine.
