Abstract

Utilization of natural ingredients as medicine tends to increase in recent times to replace modern medicines such as cotton leaves. Many plant species have antibacterial properties, including the cotton plant (Gossypium hirsutum L.). Cotton leaf plant (Gossypium hirsutum L.). It is known that natural compounds that have the potential as antibacterials generally contain saponins, alkaloids, polyphenols, and flavonoids are cotton plants (Gossypium hirsutum L.). Therefore, it is necessary to conduct research on the inhibition of Cotton leaf extract (Gossypium hirsutum L.) as an anti-bacterial agent for Staphylococcus aureus. The general objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of cotton leaves (Gossypium hirsutum L.) as an antibacterial for Staphylococcus aureus. The results of this study are expected to provide basic information about the use of cotton leaves (Gossypium hirsutum L.) as an alternative treatment for infectious diseases, especially those caused by Staphylococcus aureus bacteria so that they can become one of the efforts to develop treatments derived from natural ingredients. This type of research is a laboratory experimental design with a one shoot case study design, namely a research design with treatment of the independent variables followed by observations or measurements of the independent variables. Based on the data from this study it can be concluded that cotton leaf extract (Gossypium hirsutum L.) is able to inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus, with a sensitive category where the greatest antibacterial activity is produced at an extract concentration of 100% which is indicated by the formation of an inhibition zone of 18.10 mm.

Abstract

Infectious diseases remain a major public health concern due to their high morbidity and mortality rates, including conditions such as cardiovascular diseases, cancer, chronic respiratory diseases, and diabetes mellitus. Cardiovascular disease and diabetes are strongly associated with central obesity, dyslipidemia, elevated fasting blood glucose, and hypertension. Metabolic syndrome is defined as a constellation of complex metabolic abnormalities that significantly increases the risk of developing cardiovascular disease and type II diabetes mellitus. The key components implicated in the pathogenesis of metabolic syndrome include hypertension, central obesity, insulin resistance, and atherogenic dyslipidemia. This study aimed to educate the community about metabolic syndrome while simultaneously conducting early detection. The screening procedures included measurements of blood pressure, waist circumference, blood glucose levels, the measurement of total cholesterol, triglycerides, and low density lipoprotein (LDL) levels was performed using the Point of Care Testing (POCT) method. A total of 52 respondents participated in this activity, consisting of 57.7% (n=30) females and 42.3% (n=22) males. The results indicated that 92.3% (n=48) had normal blood glucose levels, 100% (n=52) had normal total cholesterol, and 21.2% (n=11) had normal LDL levels. Normal blood pressure was observed in 34.6% (n=18), while 67.3% (n=35) were found to have central obesity. Overall, 9.6% (n=5) of respondents were diagnosed with metabolic syndrome, whereas 90.4% (n=47) were not. Most respondents demonstrated metabolic risk factors such as hypertension, central obesity, and elevated LDL levels, despite having normal blood glucose and total cholesterol. These findings underscore the importance of continuous public health education and targeted interventions to prevent and reduce the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in the community.

Abstract

Background: Pulmonary tuberculosis is still one of the main health problems in the world. Treatment of TB cases is one of the main strategies for controlling TB because it can break the chain of transmission. Anti-tuberculosis drugs can kill and inhibit Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteria, but the use of these drugs can have side effects on different organs, especially the hematological system. Aims: This study aims to determine the hematological profile of tuberculosis patients undergoing treatment. Methods: The type of research used is descriptive quantitative with a cross-sectional approach. The independent variable is pulmonary TB patients undergoing treatment, the dependent variable is the hematological profile with a sample of 70 tuberculosis patients whose specimens were taken in the form of venous blood with K3EDTA anticoagulant. The results: frequency of anemia in male TB 32 people and female 14 people, followed by a decrease in hemoglobin levels, hematocrit and erythrocyte count. The absolute value of the erythrocyte index in tuberculosis patients was found to be a normal MCV value (77%) and decreased by 23%. MCH values were normal in tuberculosis patients (89%) and 11% experienced a decrease. For MCHC and RDW CV, it was found that there was an increase in values above the reference values, however, TB patients (83%) had normal MCHC values and 17% had increased MCHC values. Likewise, 87% of RDW CV had normal RDW CV values and 13% of tuberculosis patients had increased RDW CV values. The erythrocyte sedimentation rate in TB patients increased in men by 63% and women by 50%. Conclusions: TB patients undergoing treatment have normal leukocyte and platelet counts. From the results of leukocyte examination, 85% of patients had normal leukocyte counts, 12% leukocytosis and 3% leukopenia. The number of platelets in tuberculosis patients is 93% normal, 1% thrombocytopenia and 6% thrombocytosis. Keywords: Hematology, Tuberculosis Patients, Pulmonary TB
