To gain the data, the reserachers interviewed two teachers teaching two different Speaking classes and observed the communication happened during teaching and learning process within WA group in which 23 students participated in each class. The results of interview showed that the use of WA as communication channel in teaching and learning process was based on some reasons as all participants had this application and could operate this application well; WA offered complete fitures that could facilitate teaching and learning as well as communication process; this application was considered to be less internet data consuming so it would not burden the participants. In addition, the results of observation showed that the verbal and non verbal communication performed by WA participants accommodated social, ritual, expressive, and instrumental communication functions which led to sustainable communication and intimacy amongst the members. Regarding the posstive sides of WA, the researchers suggest all educators to make use WA in their online learning. Besides, the further researchers are encouraged to conduct further investigation on WA implementation in order to broader the knowledge of communication in education. In speaking English, students should concern with vocabulary items, grammar, intonation, body language and so on. This research purposes to know the ability of students taught by using L1/L2 based strategies and students taught without L1/L2 based strategies, and also to know the influence of L1/L2 based strategies toward students’ speaking ability. The research method was quasi-experimental which used two groups as Experimental Group (EG) and Control Group (CG). The research subjects were 90 students. The EG showed that there was difference before and after treatment although it was not significant. It also occurred for CG. However, by comparing the scores of both groups, this research found that sig. value is 0.000, in which the probability value (pvalue) significant level (α=0.05). Hence, it is strengthen by tvalue 3.807 with df 44 (n-1) compared to ttable (2.015). Thus, it can be concluded that Ho is rejected. There is positive influence of L1/L2 based strategy towards speaking ability of students in IKIP Budi Utomo Malang.

Abstract

The teaching of speaking has been challenging for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners, especially at higher education levels. This can be affected by internal factors like student interest and motivation and external factors like learners' first influence. One alternative that teachers can use to help students perform better in speaking class is a scoring rubric. This descriptive qualitative study was designed to elaborate and describe students' attitudes to using scoring rubrics in speaking performance classes. This study involved 25 students attending classes at a higher education level. To gain data from those twenty-five students, an observation checklist was used to detect students' behaviour and performance. An interview guide was used to determine student thoughts on the distributed scoring rubric. The observation checklist indicated that the students looked more confident in their speaking performance. Besides, their speaking performance was more organized. The interview confirmed these findings, resulting in students feeling more confident in presenting their project as the scoring rubric, which was distributed in advance, gave them hints on what to do. Also, the presented points for each criterion motivate them to fulfil the requirements to achieve their intended score. The study's findings show that using a scoring rubric in teaching speaking positively impacted students' performance attitudes. Consequently, the distribution of scoring rubrics as a tool to stimulate students' speaking is extensively advised.

Abstract

This study aims to describe how the avail of Artificial Intelligence-based ChatGPT as an amorphous speaking partner helps alleviate students’ speaking anxiety. By employing a classroom action research (CAR) method, this study involved 42 students in an English Department class in a private university in Malang. The participants were 32 female students and 10 male students in a Basic English-Speaking class. The researchers employed purposive sampling and chose those forty-two students as the research subjects as they indicated speaking anxiety. The procedure of this research included one cycle of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The findings portrayed that the use of chatting through voice in ChatGPT was a great success in alleviating students’ speaking anxiety. The success was reflected on the leap of students’ speaking performance after the utilization of artificial intelligence-based speaking partner. The observation carried out during this study supported the finding as the majority of the students were indicated as more active and confident in performing speaking attempts through ChatGPT compared to when they were required to speak to their peers. Also, the interview with students confirmed that they did not feel pressure when they spoke with ChatGPT as much as when they faced real humans. Thus, the utilization of AI-based ChatGPT voice feature is advised to be used to reduce speaking anxiety in other contexts and subjects.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the extent to which students' writing skills can be promoted through small group discussions. A quasi-experimental study design was used. The analysis took place over six sessions, including pre-test, treatment, and post-test. There were two classes: A Class and B Class, each with 21 understudies. A Class was the control gather that was intense by address strategy, while B Class was the exploratory bunch that was intense through little bunch discourse. The information instrument was utilized in both the pre-test and the post-test. Both bunches were given the pre-test pre-test some time recently treatment started, and the post-test took put after treatment. The results indicated that the students in the test group scored higher on average (66 compared to 54) than the students in the control group. The result of the t-test calculation for independent samples showed a significance level of 0.000 and a p-value of 0.05. It is assumed that (Ha), while (Ho) is rejected due to the significance level < the value of probability (0.000 < 0.05). Therefore, BeTe (Be A Trainer) students in Desa Inggris Singosari who were taught writing in small group discussions experienced a significant improvement in their writing skills.
