Abstract

Abstract

The teaching of speaking has been challenging for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners, especially at higher education levels. This can be affected by internal factors like student interest and motivation and external factors like learners' first influence. One alternative that teachers can use to help students perform better in speaking class is a scoring rubric. This descriptive qualitative study was designed to elaborate and describe students' attitudes to using scoring rubrics in speaking performance classes. This study involved 25 students attending classes at a higher education level. To gain data from those twenty-five students, an observation checklist was used to detect students' behaviour and performance. An interview guide was used to determine student thoughts on the distributed scoring rubric. The observation checklist indicated that the students looked more confident in their speaking performance. Besides, their speaking performance was more organized. The interview confirmed these findings, resulting in students feeling more confident in presenting their project as the scoring rubric, which was distributed in advance, gave them hints on what to do. Also, the presented points for each criterion motivate them to fulfil the requirements to achieve their intended score. The study's findings show that using a scoring rubric in teaching speaking positively impacted students' performance attitudes. Consequently, the distribution of scoring rubrics as a tool to stimulate students' speaking is extensively advised.

The influence of global culture is increasingly difficult to be blocked [1] [2], meanwhile geographically, the location of the cultural existence is precisely at the crossroads of two major cultures, namely Javanese and Balinese cultures [3]. Qualitative research through phenomenological studies was conducted through in-depth interviews with cultural actors (street singers) and the Using supporting community of Banyuwangi. The data is then analyzed through the sequence stages: (1) transcribing the recorded interview results to written form, (2) bracketing (epoche), (3) taking an inventory of important statements (horizonalization), (4) formulating into the meaning (cluster of meaning) and (5) performing the descriptions of the essence. The results of this study cover two important things. First, Using culture can survive because of the aclak (active), bingkak (creative) and ladak (innovative) spirits of Using cultural actors. Second, the acceptance of the Banyuwangi community in general for the artistic expression of Using songs due to the consequences of the defense (uri-uri) spirit of the community. This study concludes that the preservation of Using culture is based on the internal spirit (active, creative, innovative) of cultural actors and external spirit, namely the process of preservation (uri-uri).

Abstract

This study explores students' perceptions of podcast-based reading tasks in enhancing reading skills among fourth-semester English Department students at a private university in Malang. Using a qualitative case study approach, twelve intermediate-level students participated in podcast-based reading activities, followed by semi-structured interviews. The collected data were transcribed and analyzed using thematic analysis to identify recurring patterns in students’ experiences. The findings reveal that students experienced improved reading comprehension when listening to podcasts before reading transcripts, particularly in initial text understanding, word recognition, attention to textual details, and active engagement with intentionally gapped transcripts. Despite minor challenges related to speech clarity, students reported increased reading confidence and expressed interest in continued use of this method. The integration of listening and reading through podcasts demonstrates potential for enhancing EFL students’ reading development and engagement with English texts.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the efficiency of curriculum implementation in Islamic education in the era of globalization, using Ahmad Rusydi Thu’aimah's perspective as the theoretical basis. The research method used is a literature review enriched with a comparative analysis of various previous studies from the reputable journal SINTA. The results indicate that Thu’aimah's curriculum principles, including material relevance, functional content selection, a communicative learning approach, and competency orientation, are highly relevant in improving the efficiency of the Islamic education curriculum. The integration of Islamic values with 21st-century competencies has proven to produce a curriculum that is adaptive, effective, and maintains Islamic identity. However, the implementation of an efficient curriculum faces several obstacles, such as low teacher digital literacy, resistance to innovation, and limited technological resources in some Islamic educational institutions. This study confirms that implementing Ahmad Rusydi Thu’aimah's curriculum principles can be a strategic solution to strengthen the quality and competitiveness of Islamic education amidst global challenges
