Abstract

This study is a lexicostatistical and glottochronological study that aims to classify words by prioritizing time calculations or calculating the age of relatives’ languages. This research is focused on Berau and Minangkabau languages. The people who speak the Berau Language are people of the Berau tribe in Berau District, East Kalimantan. Meanwhile, the Minangkabau language is spoken by people in the Province of West Sumatra (except the Mentawai Islands), western Riau Province, and Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia. The collection phase used the referential equivalent method, the data analysis stage used the lexicostatistical and glotochronological methods. Moreover, the results of data analysis used informal and formal methods. The theory used is sound correspondence, lexicostatistics, and glottochronology. The analysis shows some points such as 37 pairs of identical, 46 pairs of phonemic correspondences, 1 pair of different phonemes, and 44 pairs of similar forms. Lexicostatistical calculations show that the percentage of kinship between Berau and Minangkabau languages is 67%. Berau and Minangkabau languages were single languages in 1.053–787 years ago. Berau and Minangkabau languages have been separated from the proto-language between 970–1.236 BC (calculated from 2023).Kajian ini merupakan kajian leksikostatistik dan glotokronologi yang bertujuan mengelompokkan kosakata kerabat dengan menekankan perhitungan waktu pisah atau usia bahasa kerabat.

Abstract

Rumah Atsiri Indonesia (RAI) as a tourist destination that carries the concept of integrated destination, has a mission to educate the public about the history of essential oils and essential plants that can be used for various purposes. In an effort to provide this information to all visitors, RAI is committed to providing comprehensive information to all visitors, both local and foreign tourists. The increasing number of foreign tourists requires RAI's human resources, especially educators, to improve their competence in English. The Community Service Programme (PKM) carried out by the English for Creative Industries Research Group from the D-3 English Study Programme, Vocational School, UNS, with the title Improving the Quality of Human Resources at Rumah Atsiri Indonesia through Bilingual Training Modules Arrangement, is expected to be a solution to this problem. This PKM activity is carried out in several stages of work: first, the analysis of partner needs; second, the process of translating existing modules into English; third, the arrangements of modules in two languages; and last, the overall program evaluation. The translation process refers to the stages of translation by Nida and Taber, as well as translation techniques by Molina and Albir. The results of the translation are then compiled in the form of bilingual modules that can be studied independently by RAI’s human resources. keywords: module, bilingual, translation

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Formula-E, which was successfully held in Jakarta, Indonesia, gave rise to various reports. This linguistics study aims to analyze the purpose of online media coverage about 'dukungan pemerintah' on the Formula-E event, which took place on Saturday, 4 June 2022. The data  were taken from online media portals Bisnis.com, CNN, Detik, Kompas, Pikiran Rakyat, and Tribunnews. There are 108 articles analyzed in this study. The articles were scrapped from the same day when the Formula E was held. The data that are sentences from the articles were analyzed using a corpus approach to find words 'dukungan’ (support) and 'pemerintah' (government) using concordances. The data discussed using Van Dijk's critical discourse analysis theory to reveal its meaning. The results found that the macrostructure is government support for the 2022 Formula-E. Then the superstructure of the six media uses a framework that matches the title and content. In the microstructure, 'dukungan' and 'pemerintah' concordances were found. Analysis of social cognition found that online media portals show partiality. The media that is most likely to support the government is CNN. It can be seen from the chosen language, which tends to provide evidence that the central government has supported this event. Meanwhile, the media that seemed to criticize the government's support was Tribunnews by presenting the figure of Joko Suranto as one of the Indonesian citizens who sponsored this event rather than central government. The social context to be achieved is that online media tend to show their side with the government by not choosing words that discredit the government.

Abstract

The essential role of risk communication in the disaster involved in the extreme flood crisis on Sumatra in the end of 2025 was critical to human safety. Nonetheless, the press releases of Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) sometimes had complicated language, and this was might unable to attract the masses to identify with this natural phenomenon. This study explored the meteorological registers and readability of BMKG press releases and how its impact on pedagogy. This study employed the Mixed Methods Research (MMR) approach by analyzing official press releases of Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra BMKG on November to December 2025 flood crisis. The Flesch Reading Ease (FRE) formula was used to measure the quantitative readability, and the qualitative analysis was used to examine the differences between the main texts and the appendices. The results indicate that there is a shift in language use: the Main Texts are characterized by a scientific register, high lexical density, global meteorological vocabulary (e.g., MJO, IOD, TC), and unclear acronyms, indicating characteristic of the scientific language prevails. Contrastingly, the Appendices are written with a practical register, which provides easy to follow clear actionable instructions. This finding is supported by FRE scores, showing that the Main Texts score is between -43.75 and 17.8 (on a scale of 0-100, where lower scores indicate higher complexity), whereas the Appendices score is far better, between -34,14 and 40,29. This significant gap between language and text function makes the reasoning behind meteorological warnings might inaccessible to the people, causing them to obey without being able to fully comprehend the underlying meteorological risks and the necessity of the warnings. Then, this study proposed four stages of teaching model as pedagogy impact as follow: analysis, deconstruction, reconstruction and evaluation, to prepare future science communicators to bridge the gap between expert information with public understanding.
