Abstract

Abstract

This article discusses the function of logical meaning which can be identified from logico-semantic and taxis interdependence. This descriptive-qualitative research employs systemic functional linguistics approach. The data sources are all clause complexes in the Timun Emas folkflore written by the best IKAPI writer and translated into English by the translator of Litte Serambi. The function of logical meaning (projection, enhancement and extension) in source and target language spreads to all text structures, started from orientation, complication, evaluation, resolution and coda. The complication had distinctive feature of projection showed by dialogues between characters. Temporal series in the enhancement (time) plays pivotal role in constructing events. Then, the the extension function in Timun Emas folklore and its translation is worthwhile to give information for the comprehensible narrative with the help of chronological series from enhancement (time) function.Next, some changes of the logical meaning after translation process do not seemingly influence to the text structure of this folklore.

Abstract

This research explores the efficacy of two prominent machine translation platforms, DeepL and ChatGPT, in translating academic idioms from English to Indonesian. Academic idioms, situated between discipline-specific jargon and universally understood expressions, pose a challenge for existing translation systems, particularly those rooted in Neural Machine Translation (NMT). The study employs a qualitative descriptive methodology, focusing on translation precision and naturalness, with bilingual experts evaluating translations through a questionnaire, focusing on translation precision and naturalness. The comprehensive analysis involved 50 participants who assessed translations on a scale of accuracy and fluency using Fiederer and O'Brian's (2009) rating scale.  The results indicate that both platforms exhibit strengths and weaknesses in terms of accuracy and fluency. While DeepL demonstrates trust in its translation proficiency, ChatGPT receives a more favorable response, especially regarding fluency. Participants preferred ChatGPT for fluency in handling academic expressions, indicating its adaptability. The study also revealed a general agreement among participants regarding the difficulties both platforms encounter in accurately translating academic idioms, emphasizing continuous requirements for improved machine translation. These insights enhance understanding of machine translation's strengths and limitations in academic setting, with implications for future technology development.

Abstract

Materials relevant to this analysis are comprised of English dialogues from the film itself and the Indonesian translation provided via subtitle, with the collection of data reduced as per Miles and Huberman's instructions and then analyzed in accordance to Newmark's measurements regarding translation methods. It was found, that because of the varying dynamics that occurs within conversations and the ongoing narrative; A translator's familiarity in the domain of a given language has a sizable impact on the resulting translation, since the meanings held behind the ensuing acts and dialogues may vary greatly from one end to the other.
