Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder which is a serious problem for the health of the people of Indonesia and the world, so the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and the World Health Organization (WHO) set November 14 as World Diabetes Day. The aim of the research is to increase public knowledge about Diabetes Mellitus, to behave and behave as they should in their daily lives, starting with lifestyle and patterns of food and drink intake. Counseling is carried out to PKK cadres as the spearhead who continue to the community members. The study design was a lecture accompanied by cross sectional pre and post test data collection. The results of the knowledge aspects of the study showed that there was a very significant difference between the pre and post test results (p = 0,000). The attitude aspect showed that there was no significant difference between the pre and post test results (p = 0.257), but overall the cadre's attitude regarding a healthy lifestyle to prevent Diabetes Mellitus was good enough. Behavioral aspects indicate that there are respondents who behave well, a maximum value of 3, but some are not good, a minimum value of 0. The results of blood sugar tests when showing as many as 69.57% of participants are not certain to have DM, while the rest are not DM. The conclusion is that there is a very significant increase in PKK cadre knowledge, but there has not been a significant change in attitude after attending counseling.

Abstract

Guazuma ulmifolia, or commonly known as the bastard cedar, has many pharmaceutical activities and is, therefore, claimed as a source of various plant-based medicines. This reserach was purposed to identify the antioxidant activities of the ethanolic extract of G. ulmifolia (EEGU) by phytochemical screening assay, total flavonoid and total phenolic testing, and comparative analysis between the antioxidant activities of EEGU and epicatechin. The qualitative phytochemical screening assay of EEGU detected the availability of phenols, flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, and terpenoids, but not saponins and triterpenoids. Meanwhile, the total phenolic content was 32.24 µg GAE/mg extract, and the total flavonoid content decided using aluminum chloride reagent with quercetin standard, was 6.48 µg QE/mg extract. The role of antioxidants examined by FRAP, DPPH, H2O2, and ABTS assays. These assay are proved that the IC50 values of EEGU are higher than those of epicatechin. For DPPH scavenging, H2O2 scavenging, and ABTS reduction activities, EEGU resulted IC50 45.70 μg/mL, 162.93 μg/mL, and 35.96 μg/mL, while epicatechin only yielded IC50 0.56 μg/mL, 57.91 μg/mL, and 16.74 μg/mL respectively. Otherwise, the highest reduction in FRAP activities were shown at  50 μg/mL concentration  of epicatechin and EEGU were 236.33 and 202.71 µM Fe (II)/µg respectively. Based on these results, EEGU is concluded as an active natural product because it exhibit antioxidant activities.

Abstract

Abstract

Soybean Detam 1 and Jati Belanda leaves are potential alternative medicines for treating dyslipidemia. The purpose of this study is to explore  the potential of the combination of Ethanolic Extract Soybean Detam 1 (EEKD) and Jati Belanda (EEJB) in lowering LDL cholesterol and triglycerides compared to single extract and Simvastatin. Using a real laboratory experimental method with CRD, a total of 36 male Wistar rats were divided into 6 groups and administrated for treatment of 28 days. The results showed a significant decrease of LDL cholesterol as well as triglyceride in NC  as compared to P1, P2, P3 (p <0.05) and no significant difference with PC (p> 0.05). The highest suppression of LDL cholesterol between P1 with P2 and P3 is (p <0.05) while the triglyceride is between P1 and P2 (p <0.05). This study concludes that the combination of EEKD 10 mg, 20 mg EEJB, EEKD 30 mg and EEJB 30 mg is significantly lowering LDL cholesterol and triglyceride. The combination of EEKD 10 mg, 20 mg EEJB is the highest compression of LDL cholesterol and triglyceride, and has an equivalent effect with simvastatin in lowering LDL cholesterol and triglycerides in male Wistar rats induced with high fat diet. Keywords: LDL cholesterol, triglycerides

Abstract

Dental caries or tooth decay is a result of the production of acid from fermentation ofbacteria that destroy tooth tissue. It can be prevented by maintaining the stability of salivaryvolume and acidity. Chewing xylitol gum is beneficial for increasing salivary volume andacidity. The aim of the study is to determine the effect of chewing xylitol gum on salivary volumeand acidity. The study is a quasi experiment conducted to 30 males aged between 17-25 yearsold. Pre and post treatment’s salivary volume are measured with measuring cup. Pre and posttreatment’s salivary acidity are measured using a pHmeter with 0,1 accuracy. Data areanalyzed with paired “t” test (a = 0,05). Average salivary volume after chewing xylitol gumincreased very significantly from 0,26 mL to 13,37mL (p=0,000). Average salivary acidity afterchewing xylitol gum increased very significantyly from 6,47 to 7,36(p=0,000). The researchconcludes that chewing xylitol gum increases salivary volume and acidity. Keywords : dental caries, xylitol, salivary volume, salivary acidity
