Abstract

In the Mandailing Natal community in North Sumatra, Indonesia, predominantly Muslim, inheritance distribution often deviates from Islamic law due to the influence of local customs. The kinship system of na tolu plays a significant role, causing a delay in inheritance distribution until both parents have passed and all heirs are either of legal age or married. This practice aims to preserve family harmony but highlights a tension between Mandailing customary law and Islamic law, complicating the pursuit of justice in inheritance matters. This study explores the interaction between Mandailing custom and Islamic law in inheritance distribution, examining how the two legal frameworks influence one another. The research adopts a qualitative, juridical approach and reveals that customary norms, especially Dalihan Na Tolu, tend to outweigh Islamic law. Traditional leaders and religious scholars are key mediators, facilitating compromise and adaptation in inheritance distribution. The study suggests that enhancing Islamic law education and fostering collaboration between traditional leaders and scholars could help harmonize local customs with Islamic principles, ensuring a fairer inheritance process.

Abstract

There is a trend among Muslims, especially married couples, not to or delay having children. Meanwhile, having children horizontally is one of the main goals of marriage to continue the human race. This literature research used secondary data which were collected in two ways: manually and online. Manual data comprised information derived from major books on marriage, maqasid al-shari’a, and others. Online data were acquired in the form of articles attributed to research themes using an open journal system. The collected data were subsequently analyzed through data reduction, data display, and verification techniques. This research found that the goal of marriage in Islamic law referred to both horizontal and vertical aspects. Vertically, marriage aimed to display one’s level of allegiance to God, who created him. This obedience was accompanied by a faith test in the shape of the ability to restrict and control desires in the face of the magnitude of human sexuality’s challenges and God’s call to produce pious offspring. Horizontally, the aim of marriage was directly tied to oneself, others, and the surrounding environment. Marriage, in this perspective, served a social function by creating a communal family. Families could be formed and developed when there were children and offspring. As a result, the presence of children in a marriage is essential for establishing society, nation, and civilization, because those all cannot exist without children.

Abstract

This article aims to examine the role of Islamic educational psychology in developing adolescents’ emotional intelligence through a spiritual approach rooted in Islamic teachings. The study is based on the assumption that Islamic spiritual values have great potential to shape adolescents’ self-awareness, emotional regulation, and social skills holistically. The rationale for this research stems from the growing emotional challenges faced by adolescents in the modern era, such as academic stress, identity crises, and poor emotional regulation. The subjects of this study were students of Madrasah Aliyah Swasta Al-Ansor, using a qualitative research method and an educational psychology approach. Data collection techniques included interviews, observations, and documentation. The findings show that Islamic education plays a significant role in guiding adolescents to develop emotional intelligence through the internalization of faith-based values, spiritual cultivation, teacher role modeling, and a supportive religious environment. The implications highlight the importance of integrating modern psychological theories with Islamic transcendental values in designing learning strategies and character development programs, enabling adolescents to navigate life’s dynamics with balanced emotional and spiritual strength.
