Abstract

Abstract The high divorce rate in Indonesia becomes a social phenomenon, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Pandemic situation puts tension on married life, which can reduce marital satisfaction which is one of the predictors of divorce. This quantitative study aims to explore the influence of each emotion regulation strategy, namely cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression on marital satisfaction among married individuals in Indonesia. This study was conducted on 166 participants using Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ) (α reappraisal = 0,676, α suppression = 0,729) and Relationship Assessment Scale (RAS) (α = 0,827) to measure emotion regulation strategy and marital satisfaction of each participant. Data from a sample were analyzed with multiple hierarchy regression tests, Pearson correlation, and independent sample t-test. The results showed that cognitive reappraisal strategies contributed significantly to marital satisfaction, and expressive suppression contributed significantly only to men, while in women there was no meaningful contribution. This study is expected to provide useful findings in regulating emotions in couples, especially those that are gender sensitive, in order to increase marital satisfaction. Keywords: COVID-19 pandemic; emotion regulation strategy; marital satisfaction Abstrak Tingginya angka perceraian di Indonesia menjadi fenomena sosial, khususnya di masa pandemi COVID-19. Abstract

This article examines the relational approach as a conceptual framework for understanding psychological experiences, particularly within the collectivistic context of Indonesian society. In contrast to conventional approaches that tend to position relationships as external variables, the relational approach conceptualises relationships as the foundation of self-formation and psychological processes. This paper elaborates the core assumptions of the relational approach and highlights its relevance within the indigenous context. Theoretical and practical implications are formulated by emphasising the importance of developing psychological frameworks that move beyond cultural sensitivity, instead grounding their understanding of human experience in relational realities.

Abstract

Life satisfaction is a key component of subjective well-being, influenced by psychological, social, and cultural factors, including perceptions of romantic relationships. In Indonesia’s collectivist and religious culture, marital status is often associated with moral maturity and social accomplishment, which may shape how individuals, particularly singles, perceive the importance of romantic relationships. This study examines whether the perceived importance of romantic relationships predicts life satisfaction among single adults. A total of 370 single participants (mean age = 28.79; SD = 4.074) were recruited through purposive sampling. Instruments included the Brief Measure of Relationship Importance (BMRI) and the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS). Linear regression analysis revealed that perceived romantic relationship importance significantly predicted life satisfaction among male participants (4,3%), but not among females. These findings indicate gender differences in how romantic values relate to psychological well-being and highlight the potential influence of cultural expectations surrounding relationships and life satisfaction in the Indonesian context. Abstract

This study explores how single men in Indonesia make sense of romantic relationships amid competing expectations of intimacy and culturally embedded gender norms. Prior scholarship on singleness and relationship experiences has predominantly centred women’s perspectives, leaving men’s meanings and negotiations of romantic involvement less examined in depth. Using a qualitative design, we conducted a focus group discussion with five single men in Jakarta and analysed the data through reflexive thematic analysis. The findings indicate that participants generally endorsed relational ideals characterised by reciprocity, mutual support, and egalitarian partnership. However, these ideals were frequently complicated by the persistent influence of traditional gender-role expectations within their social environment, creating tensions between what participants regarded as desirable relationship practices and what they anticipated as normative—particularly in the transition from dating to marriage. Overall, the study highlights how patriarchal cultural scripts remain salient in shaping men’s expectations, role imaginaries, and relational negotiations. These insights suggest the value of relationship education and gender-awareness initiatives that address not only individual skills (e.g., communication and emotional openness) but also broader normative pressures that structure intimate life.

Abstract

Religious beliefs are often intertwined with emotional responses, particularly toward stimuli perceived as impure or morally deviant. The way individuals internalize religious teachings may shape how they experience emotions like disgust. This study examined the influence of religious orientation–both intrinsic and extrinsic– on disgust sensitivity among adults in the Greater Jakarta area. To explore this, 375 participants (Mage = 32.18, SD = 2.82) were recruited using snowball and purposive sampling methods and completed an online survey. Religious orientation was measured using the Religious Orientation Scale (ROS), while disgust sensitivity was assessed with the Three Domains of Disgust Scale (TDDS). Analysis revealed that extrinsic religious orientation significantly predicted higher levels of disgust sensitivity, and this relationship was more pronounced among women. These findings suggest that individuals who approach religion for instrumental or social purposes may exhibit heightened emotional reactivity to disgust-related stimuli, with gender differences indicating a potentially stronger sensitivity among women.
