Abstract

Secondary school teachers need to have strong Mathematics Content Knowledge of chance and combination to teach effectively and help students understand the concepts. This study aims to describe the correlation between Mathematics Content Knowledge of senior and junior secondary school teachers. The research subjects in this study were 17 secondary school teachers consisting of senior and junior teachers. The results were analyzed using Pearson Correlation to describe the relationship between MCK and teacher tenure. Furthermore, two subjects (one senior teacher and one junior teacher) were taken to be interviewed and described the ability to solve chance and combination problems. The results showed that there was no correlation between MCK and teacher seniority. In the context of chance, r , while in the context of combination r . Based on the test and interview results, it was found that senior teachers performed the algorithm more sequentially and completely than junior teachers. This can be caused by the readiness of senior teachers in solving the problems given. The researcher hopes that there will be further research with more subjects and more varied materials.

Abstract

This article discusses the implementation of a workshop to strengthen the literacy Program Sekolah Penggerak (PSP) of primary school teachers in Sidoarjo. PSP is a government initiative to improve the quality of basic education and teacher participation is crucial to the success of the program. The workshop was designed to provide primary school teachers with an in-depth understanding of PSP concepts, objectives and implementation strategies. The method of organizing the workshop began with observation to determine the needs of the target in order to deepen the concept of literacy, then continued with the implementation of workshop activities which included presentations, group discussions, and practical simulations. Next, a questionnaire was administered to determine the interest, perceptions, attitudes and beliefs of participants towards improving literacy after participating in this activity. The evaluation results showed that the increase in teachers' understanding and involvement in PSP after attending the workshop was very positive. The results of the questionnaire on participants' perceptions of literacy improvement showed that 96% of participants had a positive perception of the workshop activities. The literacy strengthening workshop received a positive response from the participants. During the presentation of the material, participants followed with enthusiasm. This community service activity can improve teachers' understanding of literacy concepts and literacy misconceptions. participants were able to identify the potential and challenges in implementing PSP in their schools and develop strategies to improve the effectiveness of the program. With this workshop, it is hoped that the literacy of the PSP program can be improved, have a positive impact on learning at the primary level, and improve the quality of education in Sidoarjo.

Abstract

This is a design research which aims to describe the learning trajectory of volume and surface area of rectangular prism by considering the involvement of the multiple intelligences-based activities within the realistic mathematics education (RME) learning activity. A total of 39 students of grade five at an elementary school in Sidoarjo, Indonesia were involved in teaching experiment phase. By collecting data through documentation, interviews, and classroom observations, the Hypothetical Learning Trajectory which was developed in pilot experiment was then revised to get a revised learning trajectory reported in this paper. Such a revised learning trajectory are the learning activities around drawing the nets of cube and cuboids through rolling activity, comparing surface are and volume of two models with different sizes, finding surface area using the constructed nets, building miniature buildings using cube unit model, predicting the number cube units in a box, constructing various models of cuboids to various sizes using particular number of cube units, rearranging a number of cube units arrangements with different layers to get different volume and surface area, and comparing the volumes of two rectangular prism made from the same rectangular model of paper. Lastly, at the ‘formal level’ students developed their informal knowledge into formal concepts of volume and surface area of rectangular prism, which in this case is cuboid and cube.
