Abstract

This study aims to analyze trends and identify research gaps on the resilience of Islamic banking using 23 studies in the period 2019–2023. The methods used are systematic literature review and mapping study. The results of the analysis show that the majority of studies discuss the influence of the financial crisis, economic uncertainty, internal banking financial indicators and macroeconomics on the stability of Islamic banks. The regression method is the dominant approach in testing the relationship between variables, while some other studies apply the Early Warning System (EWS) to detect banking risks. However, there are several gaps in the literature that need to be considered in further research. First, many studies only focus on the analysis of Islamic banking resilience using net Non-Performing Financing (NPF) without considering its impact on certain economic sectors. Second, most studies only evaluate the significance of variables on banking resilience without calculating the optimal level of each indicator in the current economic context. Therefore, a more comprehensive approach is needed with an analysis model that is able to measure the optimal balance between risk and profitability of Islamic banking. Future research is also suggested to adopt a dynamic approach that considers the variability of economic conditions and integrates technology into the Islamic banking system to increase its resilience to both internal and external shocks.

Abstract

The agricultural sector has emerged as a critical economic pillar in Indonesia. Limited research has been conducted on Indonesia's agricultural development. However, there exists a body of literature that thoroughly integrates the agricultural sector with banking and the macroeconomic environment, especially in the context of the period preceding and during the covid-19 pandemic. This study seeks to explore various factors that hinder the growth of the agricultural sector by examining specific banking and macroeconomic variables. This research employs quarterly data from 2010 to 2024 and analyzes it utilizing a multiple regression methodology. In pursuit of this objective, the analysis incorporates the growth of agriculture's GDP share relative to total GDP, the financing of agriculture alongside total time deposits in Islamic banks, the margin of Islamic banks within the agricultural sector, the relationship between agriculture's financing and GDP, as well as considerations of inflation and food prices. Empirical evidence indicates that only financial deepening (GCPGDPP) and banking intermediation (GFinPDT) have a significant impact on agricultural growth (GGDPRGDPT). An increase in financial deepening adversely affects growth. This discovery suggests that the agricultural sector in Indonesia requires enhancements in productivity, necessitating the advancement of professional managerial skills and the adoption of technology among farmers. Furthermore, considering the considerable influence of banking intermediation on agricultural growth, it is essential that financial deepening is aligned with entrepreneurial skills capable of producing high-value-added products. The study presents a significant contribution to the growth of the agricultural sector in Indonesia by highlighting the importance of enhancing banking sector financing alongside the development of improved professional managerial skills within the agricultural industry.

Abstract

Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is a very important indicator in analyzing economic developments that occur in a country. GDP shows the extent to which economic activities will generate additional income for society within a certain period. This research aims to analyze the factors that influence the GDP of several selected ASEAN countries for the 2012-2021 period. The dependent variable used is GDP while the independent variables are the Human Development Index, Foreign Investment, Labor force and Money Supply. The data used in this research is collected from valid secondary sources, namely the official World Bank website. The analytical method used in this research is multiple linear regression analysis by using EViews 7 software. The research results show that the Human Development Index has a positive and insignificant effect on GDP. Then Foreign Investment has a positive and significant effect on selected ASEAN GDP. Then the total number of workers has a positive and significant effect on GDP. However, the Money Supply has a negative and significant effect on selected ASEAN countries. Therefore, the government should enhance human development by improving education and health services, infrastructure, innovation, and research. To boost GDP, ASEAN countries should attract foreign investment and improve human resource quality through education, training, and experience. Additionally, the government should control and stabilize the money supply to prevent excessive inflation and recession in ASEAN countries.

Abstract

The rapid rise of digital platforms, particularly TikTok, has significantly influenced consumer behavior. It causes the emergence of FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) as a key driver of impulsive purchasing. This study aims to investigate the effects of FoMO on student consumption behavior in this digital economy, focusing on students at Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta (UMY). Using a qualitative approach with a cross-sectional design, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with three UMY students who actively shop on TikTok. The findings reveal that FoMO leads to impulsive buying, driven by emotional triggers such as trends, live-streaming promotions, discounts, and free shipping. Furthermore, some students already have budgeting awareness related to FoMO purchases, while others still face financial management challenges. Additionally, feelings of guilt were identified as a secondary effect, often stemming from dissatisfaction with impulsive purchases. The study highlights the role of TikTok in amplifying FoMO-driven consumption and underscores the need for awareness to do budgeting. These findings offer insights among students to foster their mindfulness of consumption habits in this digital era.

Abstract

Islamic banking plays critical roles in providing many essential economic functions and services to the entire financial system and the overall economy. Thus, a strong and the resilience of Islamic banking is the foundation and pre-condition for achieving sustainable economic growth, given that banks are at the centre of the credit intermediation process between savers and investors. One of the main causes of past financial crisis was that the banking sector had built up excessive both on-and-off balance sheet levereage. To address such financial crisis, the resilience of Islamic banking needs to be developed. Therefore, this paper searches the level of resilience of Islamic banking by building the Islamic Banking Resilience Index (IBRI). The level of resilience is analyzed through the construction of the composite index. The composite is compiled on the basis of several single variables index. Its construction follows an ideal sequence of five steps: theoretical framework, data selection, normalization, weighting and aggregation, and visualization of the result. Twelve variables are used to construct the composite index by using monthly data since January 2010 until December 2016. The composite index is able to figure out the resilience level of Islamic banking in Indonesia over periods of observation. At the resilience level, Islamic banking is able to deal with shocks and stresses, while keep providing financial services. The level of resilience is capable of preserving the elements of banking sector not failing from both crash and stagnation phase. Therefore, construction of IBRI is important as surveillance tools and underlying reason for further policy response and implementation. The composite index, represented by IBRI, is able to show the level of resilience of Islamic banking in Indonesia. The paper finally suggests that the resilience of Islamic banking requires a solid capital and liquidity management in order to provide a stronger ability in absorbing shocks and promoting financial services.

Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to conduct a systematic review of the literature on Islamic banking performance. Method – This research analyses trends and developments in the field using the systematic literature review and mapping study approaches. A total of 56 articles were selected from an initial pool of 130 articles sourced from ScienceDirect and Scopus, using the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) method. Findings – The findings reveal that trend analysis, density visualization using VosViewer, and mapping studies indicate that research on Islamic banking performance remains dominated by traditional topics such as efficiency, financial performance, and risk management. The primary indicators include return on assets (ROA), return on equity (ROE), non-performing financing (NPF), and loan-to-deposit ratio (LDR). However, studies on Islamic bank resilience, fintech integration, and their role in developing economies remain limited. A more holistic approach is needed to address challenges and opportunities in the digital era. Implications – The implications of this study highlight the importance of policies that support digital innovation while adhering to Sharia principles. Additionally, this study identifies future research opportunities, including the resilience of Islamic banks during crises, the impact of digitalization on efficiency, the contribution of Islamic banking to the green economy, and the influence of regulations on Islamic bank performance. Ultimately, this study provides valuable insights into the trends, challenges, and opportunities facing Islamic banking in an evolving global economic landscape.

Abstract

This study investigates the impact of business confidence on economic complexity in Indonesia, focusing on three key dimensions: research, technology, and trade. Using quarterly data from 2003 to 2021 and applying the Dynamic Ordinary Least Squares (DOLS) estimation method, the analysis incorporates business confidence, economic growth, and gross fixed capital formation as explanatory variables. The DOLS results reveal that an increase in business confidence has a positive and significant effect on technological and trade complexity. However, it is associated with a negative effect on research complexity. Economic growth is positively linked to trade complexity but negatively associated with both technological and research complexity, while gross fixed capital formation contributes positively to technological and research complexity but negatively to trade complexity. These findings highlight the need for integrated policy strategies that align business sentiment and investment behavior with long-term innovation and export development goals in Indonesia.
