Abstract

Project-based learning (PjBL) has emerged as a prominent approach in vocational education, particularly in language learning, as it aligns closely with the challenges of the professional world. This study investigates the perceptions and motivations of vocational students toward the implementation of PjBL in their language courses. The purpose of this study is to analyze students' experiences with PjBL, identify the factors influencing their motivation and engagement, and propose recommendations for improving the effectiveness of PjBL in vocational education. A mixed-method approach was employed, combining quantitative data from structured questionnaires completed by 170 students across three semesters and qualitative insights from Focus Group Discussions (FGD). The sampling technique ensured representation from students with varying levels of experience with PjBL. The findings show that in general, students perceive PjBL positively, recognizing its role in enhancing their understanding of course material and developing critical skills such as communication and collaboration. However, challenges such as inconsistent instructions from lecturers, tight deadlines, and a lack of focus on the learning process in assessments were noted as significant barriers to engagement and motivation. PjBL holds substantial promise for improving language learning outcomes in vocational education. By addressing instructional consistency, providing flexible timelines, and emphasizing formative assessments, PjBL can be further optimized to better prepare students for the demands of their future careers.

Abstract

Madani Open School Depok is an alternative educational institution serving junior and senior high school students who are unable to attend regular schooling. This school faces various challenges, such as limited access to technology, low student motivation, minimal learner engagement, and a lack of teaching materials that support effective learning, particularly in English subjects. To address these issues, this community service activity aims to develop and assist in the implementation of a Learning Management System (LMS) based on Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC) to improve the quality of English language learning. The method used is Service Learning (SL), which involves the direct application of academic knowledge by lecturers and students in the community. The activity consists of five main stages: MOOC socialization, instructional content design, training and mentoring in LMS use, monitoring of student learning progress, and the development of an integrated evaluation system. The results of the activity indicate that an LMS based on MOOC provides an effective solution for improving access, quality, and participation in learning. Additionally, the school now has a digital learning system that supports attendance tracking, assignment submission, and the provision of learning materials that can be accessed flexibly by students.  Keywords—LMS, MOOC, English Language Learning, Open School Abstrak Sekolah Terbuka Madani Depok merupakan lembaga pendidikan alternatif yang melayani siswa SMP dan SMA yang tidak dapat bersekolah di jalur reguler. Abstract

The research addresses how Sundanese terms of address are translated into English. It discusses specifically the translation techniques practiced by the translator which affect the quality of the translation. The data are taken from Sundanese short stories and their translation in English. The theories exercised to find out the applied techniques are based on Molina and Albir (2002). The translation quality is examined using translation quality assessment of Nababan et al (2012). The analyses are carried out using Santosa’s methods (2017), a modification of Spreadly’s, following the analysis steps of domain, taxonomy, componential and culture findings. The results show that there are five translation techniques practiced by the translator, namely established equivalent, pure borrowings, deletion, variation, and implicit. The translation quality appears to gain 2.7. This score means that the translation is quite good. While the translation accuracy takes the highest score of 2.9, followed by acceptability 2.8, and readability having 2.5.

Abstract

Writing is one of the skills that English learners must master. However, in Indonesia where English is taught as a Foreign language (EFL), it has become the most challenging skill to learn. One of the factors is the difference in the usage of subject and verb in the sentence. This paper aims to see the impact of Google Classroom usage on the learning process of writing simple sentences, specifically the accuracy of writing the Subject Verb (S-V) agreement and students’ perception of using this online tool in writing activities. A mixed-method approach is used in this study where one group pretest-posttest of writing accuracy is done for 77 Electrical Engineering students, Jakarta State Polytechnic. For qualitative data analysis, Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) are conducted. The result shows an increase in the accuracy of students’ writing accuracy specifically on the writing of  S-V agreement. Furthermore, students believe that Google Classroom in the writing class is beneficial due to lesson hand-outs distribution and assignment submission efficiency.

Abstract

This paper examines how romantic tone is carried across languages in film subtitling, where text must be brief, well-timed, and easy to read. We focus on Dilan 1990, a popular Indonesian teen romance known for playful, indirect lines that rely on inference and rhythm. Today, many studios generate first-pass subtitles with neural machine translation and then rely on human post-editors to refine style and timing. We ask how well AI handles this kind of subtle, affect-rich dialogue and where human editing still adds value. We compare 24 well-known lines addressed by Dilan to Milea in two versions: the official English subtitles and outputs produced by ChatGPT under the same line-level constraints. Using a practical set of translation techniques (e.g., modulation, compression, adaptation) and a tone rubric (playfulness/coyness, warmth, persona/rhythm), we perform a line-by-line analysis. The human subtitles tend to keep implicature and pace through concise, idiomatic choices that fit character and reading speed. The AI versions are fluent but more likely to explain subtext or lengthen the line, which can blunt teasing and shift the scene’s mood. AI can match human choices when the source line is already compact and direct. Where meaning depends on ellipsis, metaphor, and micro-timing, human post-editing remains crucial. We close with practical guidelines for NMT-plus-post-editing workflows in romance subtitling.
