Abstract

Abstract

Food is a symbol that can prominently represent personal and group identity and form uniqueness and a sense of bonding among members of a larger group. Individuals conform themselves to communities and society through self-(re)constructing efforts. The article hypothesizes that Persib’s supporters—commonly known as bobotoh—have continuously sought new ways to express their identity. Employing identity theories related to a sense of place, culinary culture, physical space, choices, and lifestyle, the article examines the roles of Persib-related eateries and highlights the possible implications of bobotoh’s dining out. Focusing on how Pawon Sunda Buhun Bobotoh and 1933 Dapur dan Kopi—two significantly different eating places—contribute to bobotoh’s self identity (re)construction, the article argues that bobotoh also rely on consuming food as a Persib/bobotoh-related activities to express, retain and even strengthen their personal and collective identity.

Abstract

Transpositions or shifts in translation cannot be avoided since in each language, even in language units, there are different systems, such as in Russian and Indonesian adjectives. Therefore, this study discussed the various types of transpositions in translation of Russian adjectives into Indonesian and the reasons for this transposition. The method used in this study is a qualitative-descriptive method with a comparative model. The source of the data is taken from Russian short stories and its translation in Indonesian. The results of the study showed that in translation of Russian adjectives into Indonesian there were level shifts and category shifts, viz. structures, units, classes, and inter-systems. These various transpositions basically occur because the adjectives in Russian and Indonesian have many differences grammatically.

Abstract

This study examines the poems of Boris Pasternak, the famed Russian literary figure. It analyzes and compares the poet's works with those of his contemporaries and predecessors’. Some motifs, themes, images, and characteristic features of the stylistics and tropics of poetic creativity in Pasternak's lyrics were revealed, which signify the influence of traditions and innovation. By employing several literary criticism methods, namely those of close reading, a structuralist analysis, and biographical criticism, this study found that there is a wealth of themes both old and new in Pasternak’s poetry. These themes were mostly derived from past authors, which confirm the findings of Baróthy (2015), Han (2015), and Polivanova & Polivanov (2018). These themes were then reconstructed in Pasternak’s works in a way that signify these works as a celebration of the old and the welcoming of the new in the Russian literary tradition. This study has cemented Boris Pasternak’s role as a hub linking the old and the new generations in Russian literature.

Abstract

This article examines the relationship between Boris Pasternak’s life and his artistic expression through his later poems. Following Wellek & Warren’s (1954) qualitative biographical analysis of Pasternak, which is basically associated with the qualitative method, we examined his personal narrative that contributed to the formation of his poetic voice. Data were taken from Pasternak’s later poems, namely “When It Clears Up” (1956-1959)–to Pasternak’s life stories, mainly taken from Pasternak’s biography by Hingley (2021) and the compilations of his letters to his family and friends (Slater, 2010). This study revealed that the events in his life greatly influenced his creation because they became the key motif of his narrative. The death of his brother and sister was influential in his studies of mortality and death, including grief. Peredelkino was a small village, and his longer period of stay helped him to have a chance to escape in nature and to experience loneliness to the greatest extent. In addition, his poetic work carries the features left by his teachers Alexander Skryabin and Hermann Cohen. To make up for the criticism of Belyi, whom he met in the summer of 1911, Skryabin offered Pasternak the aesthetic ideals of the latter work, developing the principles of poetry. Thus, in addition to recommending for Pasternak’s literary reading material other authors’ opinions on various philosophical issues, Cohen’s philosophic teaching enriched Pasternak’s outlook on the world and launched the latter on his poetic path. Understanding the specifics of Pasternak’s late poems provides knowledge of his life shots and the interconnectedness between his experiences and creation. The novelty of this study is reflected in the integration of a biographical analysis with a poetic interpretation. Such an approach uniquely combines the qualitative biographical analysis with a close reading of Pasternak’s later poems.

Abstract

Abstract. Many students still struggle with reading comprehension, particularly in the areas of identifying topics, using proper grammar, understanding meaning, and expanding vocabulary. This study focuses on determining the effectiveness of applying the Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) model in reading comprehension, especially in composing recount text. It focuses on finding solutions to the students' reading issues in relation to the four aspects including topic, grammar,   meaning,   and   vocabulary.   The pre-experimental research design was used to carry out this research. Pre-test observations in class were also carried out by researchers before implementing the CIRC model. After carrying out the pre-test, the CIRCL model continued to be applied in class. Random sampling was used with 30 students of VIII D Secondary School in Bandung. During the course of the investigation, classes were observed and reading assessments, including pre-tests and post-tests, were administered to students. The results of this research indicated that CIRC use both individually and in groups significantly helps students' reading comprehension abilities. It was shown that the students' active participation in the implementation of CIRC model enhanced their reading comprehension abilities. Students also demonstrated positive outcomes towards numerous activities and features of the CIRC model.  This study suggests that the CIRC model can be integrated into teaching strategies in school to improve reading skills, and also encourages collaborative learning, which is essential for students’ social development in the classroom. Keywords: CIRC Model, reading comprehension, recount text

Abstract

Abstract. Translation of quotes attributed to great personalities is a niche and rather less researched area of study within the discipline of translation studies. The quotations are often culture-bound and context-dependent and present some difficulties to translators due to the cultural and historical context of their creators. This paper has a two-fold purpose: (1) to explore the translation strategies employed by student translators in rendering culturally- and contextually-loaded quotations, and (2) to identify patterns in the application of these strategies based on the quotes’ textual features—such as sentence length, word order, and lexical particularities. In line with established translation research methodologies, this research adopts a corpus-driven analysis with interpretive elements. Strategies were identified and analyzed using a robust coding framework derived from established translation theories (e.g., Vinay, 1995; Molina, 2002; Abu-Ssaydeh, 2004) and specific corpus analysis tools like Wordsmith Tools. Comparison of 50 selected quotations—mostly chosen for their culture-bound content—exemplifies the use of an array of translation strategies, with paraphrasing and explicitation being the most frequently employed. Paraphrasing, as detailed in this paper, covers rewording involving syntactic and semantic adjustments. It occurred 18 times as a co-concomitant and 7 times singly. On some occasions, these strategies were used even when there were formal or idiomatic equivalents available in the target language. This indicates that student translators need more cultural sensitivity and strategic competence development, possibly through experiential hands-on training and longer training modules. Keywords: culture-bound quotations, corpus-based analysis, paraphrasing, student translators, translation strategies
