Abstract

Uncaria is a genus of plants that grows in the Kalimantan forest. Many species in this genus are used as traditional medicines, so this genus is interesting to be studied for its chemical compound content. One species in this genus is Uncaria cordata which is also known as Bajakah plant. The aim of this study was to determine the content of secondary metabolite compounds and the level of toxicity of the ethanol extract of U. cordata stems on Artemia salina L. The methods used in this research were extraction, phytochemical tests and toxicity test using the Brine Shrimp Lethality Test (BSLT) method. The results of the phytochemical test showed that the ethanol extract of U. cordata stems contained alkaloids, triterpenoids, phenolics, flavonoids, quinones, and saponins. Furthermore, according to of the toxicity test showed that the ethanol extract of U. cordata stems had toxicity level of 75.03 ppm in the toxic category (LC50 < 1000 ppm). Based on these results, it can be concluded that the ethanol extract of U. cordata stems has the potential to have bioactivity because it is toxic to Artemia salina L. shrimp larvae. Abstract

Nutgrass (Cyperus rotundus L.) is one of the Cyperaceae family plants which is this plant belongs to weed. However, it is often used by the Chinese people as a traditional medicine. This review aimed to determine the bioactivity of nutgrass based on their secondary metabolite content. This review was carried out by Literature Review Article method from various journals through Google Scholar and Science Direct. The results of this review indicated that nutgrass has important bioactivities such as antioxidants, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, anticancer and antibacterial. Based on the review of those articles, it can be concluded that nutgrass has several important potency for human health to be further studied. Abstract

Herbal or medicinal plants contain many diverse phytochemical compounds and provide various biological effects. One of them is Bougainvillea glabra which is often used in traditional medicine in various countries due to the plant has bioactive compounds, one of which is antibacterial. This study aims to determine the antibacterial activity of Bougainvillea glabra. The methodology used was a literature study using several scientific articles about antibacterial activity published in the last ten years and published in national and international scientific journals as library sources through searches on Google Scholar site. The results showed that Bougainvillea glabra had inhibitory activity against the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, and Bacillus cereus, but it had not inhibitory activity against the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella sp. Keywords : Bougainvillea glabra, bioactive, antibacterial
