Abstract

Cimahi is one of the most populated, fast-growing cities in Indonesia. Consequently, various environmental problems appear, primarily related to the sustainability of water resources. Exploitation and pollution of water, especially groundwater, are not accompanied by a good water conservation system that ensures proper water infiltration into the soil, causing several locations in the city to experience water deficits. The city may suffer a severe water shortage if this problem is unsolved. This study aims to predict and analyze the need and availability of water in Cimahi in the next few years to determine the right solution to deal with this problem. Analysis and prediction of water availability/needs were carried out by building a dynamic model using STELLA software for simulating the conditions in the next ten years. The results of the model were combined with the applicable spatial policies to formulate possible solutions. Results showed that Cimahi will experience a water crisis starting from 2029 with a total water deficit of 8.22 million M³. The model also predicted South Cimahi District is the area with the worst conditions where the water crisis has occurred since 2022 and peaked in 2029 with water sufficiency of only 59.83%. Based on local spatial planning laws and policies, the city's government is advised to improve its catchment area to protect its water resources. The vegetation cover area surrounding the catchment area can be improved, and water absorption capacity can be increased through civil technical actions such as building absorption wells. The model results showed that a proper solution could be done by expanding 142.8 Ha of green/vegetation cover, building 1576 units of absorption wells, and increasing the PDAM supply by 100 l/second.

Abstract

Sawmill waste is a waste product that needs to be put to use. Applying biorefinery principles through pyrolysis technology, which produces liquid smoke, is one of the innovative efforts to utilize sawmill waste. Chemical compounds contained in the liquid smoke have the potential to act as biopesticides. Therefore, this study aimed to test the ability of liquid smoke from pine sawmill waste to fight PBKo (Hypothenemus hampei) pests on coffee plants. Pyrolysis produced the liquid smoke at 400–450 °C for 4–7 hours. The observed parameters were the physicochemical characteristics and efficacy of liquid smoke biopesticides at concentrations of 1.5%, 2%, and 2.5% against PBKo pests through pest attack tests, toxicity tests, and repellency tests. The results showed a total phenol value of 7248.01 mg GAE/100g. The results of the GC-MS analysis of the liquid smoke, which has the potential to be an insecticidal compound toxic to coffee fruit borer pests, are acetic acid, phenol, alcohol, furan, cycloalkane, cyclohexane, alkene, eugenol, and guaiacyl acetone. Based on the stydy’s results, liquid smoke from sawn pine wood waste at a concentration of 2.5% has the potential to be a natural biopesticide for inhibiting the growth of PBKo pests on coffee plants.

Abstract

Developing cold-setting adhesives derived from waste styrofoam (WS) of expanded polystyrene foam for laminated gmelina wood involves innovative recycling of WS into functional adhesives. As a type of thermoplastic polymer, WS can be used as an adhesive at room temperature. In this study, WS was functionalized into cold-setting adhesives through dissolution and cross-linking reaction with methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) at a concentration of 40% w/v at 60°C. The mixture was then stirred at 200 rpm for 30 minutes. The adhesive is characterized by its ability to be set at room temperature, offering environmental benefits and practical applications in wood lamination. Solids content, gelation time, viscosity, cohesion strength, functional group analysis, morphological features, and curing temperature analysis were performed to characterize the cold-setting adhesives. The WS-MDI-40% had 62.4% solids content, 906.8 mPa.s viscosity, 182.3 Pa cohesion strength, and 197.8 minutes of gelation time at room temperature. The adhesion performance was evaluated in laminated wood using gmelina wood at glue spread rates of 250 and 300 g/m2 and cold-pressed at various durations. The block shear strength value of laminated wood bonded with WS-MDI-40% at 300 g/m2 and cold-pressed for 24 hours was higher than that of other samples, reaching 8.2 MPa, which met the Japanese Agricultural Standard (JAS No. 234) for glued laminated timber, exceeding the minimum requirement of 5.4 MPa. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy revealed that the cold-setting WS-MDI-40% were cross-linked via urethane linkages (R–NH–COO–R). The free –N=C=O groups could react with the –OH groups of gmelina wood to produce laminated wood during cold-pressing. This study suggested a recycling alternative of WS into a cold-setting wood adhesive for laminated wood, which can be utilized in interior applications. Keywords: adhesive, block shear strength, cohesion strength, cold-setting, gmelina wood

Abstract

Metut Village, Mentarang Hulu District, Malinau Regency, North Kalimantan, possesses abundant woody biomass residues that remain largely underutilized despite their potential economic and environmental value. Simultaneously, local communities face challenges related to low soil fertility and limited success in agarwood (Aquilaria spp.) seed germination. This community service program aimed to introduce pyrolysis technology for converting woody biomass into biochar and liquid smoke while strengthening local capacity through training and technology transfer. By converting biomass residues that were previously left unmanaged or openly burned into valuable products, the program directly contributes to more sustainable biomass waste management at the village level. The three-day program involved 25 participants, including farmers, agarwood cultivators, village officials, women engaged in agriculture, and village youth. Activities comprised educational workshops, practical demonstrations, hands-on training, and the donation of a portable pyrolysis unit. Program effectiveness was evaluated through pre-test and post-test assessments and observation of participants’ practical performance. Results demonstrated a significant increase in knowledge, with average scores rising from 34.2% before training to 82.7% after training, reflecting a marked enhancement in community capacity to independently manage biomass resources.  All participants successfully operated the pyrolysis unit during practical sessions. A demonstration run using 12 kg of dry woody branches yielded approximately 3.2 kg of biochar and 2.1 L of liquid smoke, both promising for improving soil fertility and supporting agarwood cultivation. The donated equipment and operational manual provide a practical, replicable foundation for continued community-led biochar and liquid smoke production, supporting the long-term sustainability of biomass utilization and value-added agricultural applications.

Abstract

The accumulation of unmanaged household organic waste remains a persistent environmental challenge in rural areas, including Metut Village, Mentarang Hulu District, North Kalimantan, Indonesia, where organic waste is commonly burned or indiscriminately discarded. At the same time, local farmers continue to depend on relatively expensive chemical fertilizers. This community service program aimed to improve residents’ knowledge and practical skills in converting household organic waste into liquid organic fertilizer (LOF) as an affordable and environmentally friendly alternative for sustainable agriculture. The program employed a combination of community education and hands-on training implemented through four stages: socialization and educational counseling, training and demonstration, supervised independent practice, and evaluation using pre-test and post-test assessments. A total of 28 participants, consisting of housewives, farmer group members, and village youth, were involved in the program. The results demonstrated a substantial increase in participants’ knowledge, with average scores improving from 46.4 in the pre-test to 86.1 in the post-test. Participants successfully produced liquid organic fertilizer independently using kitchen waste fermented with a bioactivator for 14–21 days and subsequently applied the product to home garden crops. The program contributed to reducing household organic waste generation, lowering fertilizer expenditures, and promoting environmentally sustainable agricultural practices. These findings indicate that liquid organic fertilizer training is an effective approach for community empowerment and sustainable waste management in rural communities.
