Abstract

Human immunodeficiency virus is a virus that attacks lymphocytes which can reduce the human immune system, making it more susceptible to various opportunistic infectious diseases and can cause death. This can cause other diseases to infect the body, one of which causes cell inflammation and liver cell necrosis, known as Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C. The aim of this study is to determine the results of Hepatitis B Surface Antigen and Anti-Hepatitis C Virus examinations in patients positive for Human Immunodeficiency Virus. who underwent antiretroviral therapy at one of the Community Health Centers in Ciamis Regency. This research method is descriptive where the research was carried out on Human Immunodeficiency Virus positive patients at one of the Community Health Centers in Ciamis Regency with 35 respondents and the examination was carried out in the Community Health Center laboratory in May 2023. The results of this research obtained 2 (6%) HBsAg positive respondents and 1 (3%) respondent was positive for anti-HCV. In conclusion, HIV patients on antiretroviral therapy are at risk of developing Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C infections.  Key words          : anti-HCV, HBsAg, ELISA, Immunochromatography

Abstract

Aedes sp. mosquitoes are insects that can transmit dengue fever to humans. Transmission is caused by mosquito bites and mosquito population density in an area can illustrate the potential for dengue transmission. Ovitrap index measurement can be used as one of the efforts to control and prevent dengue fever. This study aims to determine the presence and density of Aedes sp. mosquitoes by the percentage value of the Ovitrap Index (OI) in the Pasirangin neighborhood. In the study, the descriptive method was used by observing ovitraps and calculating the Ovitrap Index on ovitraps in Pasirangin Neighbourhood, RW 09 Kertasari Village. Ovitrap installation was placed inside and outside the house as many as 20 houses. The results showed that of the 40 ovitraps installed, the number of positive ovitraps was 15. Based on the calculation of the overall OI percentage, the result was 37.5 %. The ovitrap index criteria for the research location has a score of 3 (OI below 40 %), which indicates that the area has a moderate potential for dengue disease vulnerability

Abstract

The high cost of media for microbial culture encourages researchers to create alternative media using local raw materials at low prices. One of the most important media compositions for bacterial growth is protein. This content can be obtained from nuts, one of which is almonds (Prunus dulcis). The purpose of this study   is   to  find  natural   media  that    has   the   potential    for   the    growth of microorganisms at a low price. The  research method  used is an experimental method to determine the growth of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria on natural media of almonds. The results showed the growth of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria in this alternative media of almonds. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that  almond  nut  media  can  be  applied  as  an  alternative  medium in   laboratory research, especially in the field of_microbiology. It is suggested that further research should be carried out on natural media which are sources of carbohydrates and proteins as alternative growth media for bacteria.

Abstract

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a pathogenic virus that attacks and damages the human immune system so that the body becomes weak in fighting viral or bacterial infections. The purpose of this study was to determine the description of Anti Streptolysin O examination in HIV patients at Imbanagara Health Center. This research method is descriptive, with a sample size of 35 HIV-positive people in Imbanagara. Measurements used qualitative and semi-quantitative procedures with a black background slide instrument. The examination was conducted at the Imbanagara Health Center in June 2023. The results of this study obtained positive results for as many as three people (9%) with an average ASTO level of 400 IU/mL and negative results for as many as 32 people (91%).

Abstract

Erythrocyte indices have been used as the first indicator in screening for beta-thalassemia minor. However, iron deficiency in hemoglobinopathies can reduce the sensitivity of screening, and the spectrum of mutations of different hemoglobinopathies between populations will result in discontinuation of the results of different erythrocyte indices. The research objective in this study was to determine the description of the erythrocyte indices used to screen for beta-thalassemia trait in Ciamis. The research method used in this study was a quantitative descriptive, using a cross-sectional study, data collection had been done during March-May 2021. The subjects of this study were 104 parents of a beta-thalassemia trait who have children with a beta-thalassemia major in Ciamis. The examination parameters used were complete blood count, with processing twenty-six erythrocyte formula index values. Ninety-two respondents were included in the inclusion criteria. The results of the erythrocyte indices in beta-thalassemia trait are England and Fraser, RBC, Mentzer, Srivastava, Shine and Lal, Ricerca, Green and King, Das Gupta, Jayabose, Telmissani-MCHD, Telmissani-MDH, Huber-Herklotz, Kerman I, Kerman II, Sirdah, Ehsani, Keikhaei, Nishad, Wongprachum, Sehgal, Pornprasert, Sirachainan, Bordbar, Matos and Carvalho and CRUISE has cut-off value in that range according to previous studies. Only the Bessman erythrocyte indices has a value of 17, exceeding the cut-off. Twenty-five erythrocyte indices with cut-off value according to previous studies can be used for beta-thalassemia screening in Ciamis, except for the Bessman erythrocyte indices.

Abstract

Urinalysis examination is needed to find information and determine the condition of the kidneys, urinary tract or other organs such as the liver, pancreas, and bile ducts. A urinary sediment examination aims to see organic and inorganic elements in the urine by preparing using Sternheimer Malbin stain reagents. Sternheimer Malbin stain has the disadvantage that it is a synthetic chemical. Stain from natural ingredients becomes a solution as an alternative to reduce the use of synthetic chemicals. Natural stains with the same characteristics and widely tested for bacterial and fungal stains are natural stains from teak leaf extract. Young leaf extract contains anthocyanins in red colour. This study aimed to determine the ability of ethanol extract from young leaves as a natural stain for urine sediment examination. The research method is an experiment with the Static Group Comparison research design. The population and samples in this study are teak leaves determined at the Galuh University Laboratory of the Biology Study Program with the Latin name (Tectona grandis L.f.). The results of the Fisher Exact test obtained a p (value) <0.050, so there was no significant difference between sediments without stain, Sternheimer Malbin, and ethanol extract of young leaves in colouring urine sediments. The conclusion is that the dye of ethanol extract from young teak leaves effectively colours the components of urine sediment, namely epithelial cells, leukocyte cells, and erythrocyte cells with red colour.
