Abstract

Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine the struggle of a secret service agent to clear his name of an alleged assassination he did not commit, as visualized in the movie Angel Has Fallen, using Vladimir Propp’s theory, particularly the seven spheres of action and thirty-one narrative functions. To conduct this research, the writer employed a qualitative method. During the analysis process, the writer classified the characters into the seven spheres of action and identified the sequence of events based on the thirty-one narrative functions. The results of this research revealed five spheres of action: villain, donor, helper, hero, and false hero. Additionally, ten narrative functions were identified in the movie Angel Has Fallen, including departure, pursuit, the first function of the donor, unfounded claims, beginning counteraction, villainy, guidance, struggle, victory, and exposure. The findings of this study contribute to the understanding of how narrative structures and character roles are used to convey themes of redemption and justice in action movies. The application of Propp’s theory provides a framework for analyzing the narrative complexities of modern films. This research could serve as a reference for future studies exploring the narrative structures of action or thriller genres and could also be useful for filmmakers aiming to craft compelling and structured narratives

Abstract

The aim of this research is to analyze about superstition as one of the characteristics of Chinese literature and how superstition is part of patriarchal agenda in oppressing women depicted in Ling Shuhua’s “Mid-Autumn Eve” translated by Marie Chan. Superstition is often manifested in Asian literature because it is part of Asian culture. By analyzing Ling Shuhua’s “The Mid-autumn Eve”, the research finds out that modern Chinese society still believes in the superstition, such as “harmony duck” that symbolizing the prosperity and eternal love; for instance, how the couple who eat the “harmony duck” in the Mid-autumn festival will live together forever. Therefore, T’ai-t’ai forces her husband to eat the duck because she is afraid that his failure in eating the duck will be an ill omen for their marriage. Through feminist perspective, superstition can lead women to fall into the trap of patriarchy. By believing in superstition, women are associated with ignorance, stupidity, and weak that needs to be excluded in men’s matter, such as decision making. In the case of Cheng-jen for instance, by letting T’ai-t’ai, her wife, takes a decision that is based on superstition, Cheng-jen faces big regret in his life; he cannot be together with his foster sister before she dies

Abstract

Abstract This study investigates how deep learning engagement influences academic self-efficacy and language performance among English majors in Indonesia. Deep learning is an active and reflective process that involves critical thinking, conceptual integration, and self-regulated learning. Using a person-centred quantitative design, data were collected from 300 English majors across three universities and analysed through Latent Profile Analysis (LPA). This study applies LPA in English as Foreign Language (EFL) higher education and examines how learner diversity can be observed in a Muslim-majority population. The analysis identified three distinct learner profiles: reflective analysts, strategic learners, and passive processors. Reflective Analysts achieved the highest levels of academic self-efficacy and language performance, as measured by GPA in writing and speaking. In contrast, Passive Processors recorded the lowest scores. Profile membership was significantly influenced by academic year with clear developmental trend, whereas gender had no effect. Overall, the findings confirm that deep learning engagement is a strong predictor of EFL achievement. Theoretically, the study advances understanding of learner diversity of deep learning within Southeast Asian higher education. Practically, The study underscores the need for differentiated instruction (e.g., reflective writing and scaffolding) to help less engaged learners strengthen their critical reflection and self-regulation.
