Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the significance of applying the RAP technique in learning activities in reading classrooms. The researcher employed a quantitative experimental research strategy for this study. The participants in this study were students in classes IX-A and IX-B at SMP Gajah Mada Medan who were in their ninth grade. Selecting samples, researchers used the term cluster random sampling by choosing two classes. There are 60 students total; there are 15 pupils in each class. Two groups of students were formed; the experimental group and the control group. The control group was instructed in traditional ways, whereas the experimental group received therapy (the RAP approach). An exam with multiple choice questions is the tool used to gather data. To assess the data, the t-test formula was used. The data was evaluated using the t-test procedure. The analysis's findings demonstrate that, at a significance level of 0.05 and with 28 degrees of freedom (df), those served exceed the t-table (3.86> 2.44). This indicates that students' learning scores have been positively impacted by the use of the RAP technique in the teaching and learning process, particularly when it comes to the reading of news articles for class.

Abstract

The study described teachers speech performance using textual and non-textual elements in language teaching-learning. The linguistic element is the text of the language landscape of Toba Caldera Geosites. This research was conducted from the philosophical perspective of empiricism that is relevant to the phenomenological paradigm, with the type of interpretative and constructive phenomenology underlying the qualitative design. The qualitative design model applied in this research was phenomenology, aiming to understand and describe individuals subjective experiences and perspectives. The data were collected through in-depth interviews, focused group discussions, and direct participatory observation. The procedure covered (1) establishing the objectives of the study and bracketing, (2) locating participants or informants, (3) data collection, (4) transcription and data analysis, (5) coding and categorization, (6) phenomenological reduction, (7) descriptive and theoretical write-up, (8) interpretation and synthesis, (9) construction and reconstruction, (10) verification and validity, and (11) formulating the findings. The results revealed that teachers should master and be able to practice a combination of text, co-text, and context simultaneously to improve speech performance in language teaching. A text includes verbal skills, co-text includes non-textual and paratextual skills, and context includes situational, cultural, social, ideological, and situational skills. In language teaching-learning, teachers should effectively and informatively master speech performance by using appropriate texts, co-texts, and contexts. The study of speech performance in language teaching-learning offers a valuable understanding of the complexities of effective communication in an educational environment.

Abstract

The purpose of this study aims to analyze the translation techniques used between Students and Chat-GPT in translating sarcasm and irony. This study is expected to provide a better understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of each translation technique. Moreover, it can provide new insights into the application of machine translation in cultural and literary contexts, such as the translation of sarcasm and irony which often have certain cultural nuances and expressions. The author also suspects that the translation of the source language to the target language through Chat-GPT may cause many differences and debates if the translation containing sarcasm and irony is misinterpreted. This research is conducted using Qualitative Descriptive method. The data source of this research is sarcasm and irony sentences taken from Gadis Kretek Novel. The author took students data samples and Chat-GPT to translate fifty sentences containing sarcasm and irony in Gadis Kretek novel by Ratih Kumala (2012). Student translators used eight translation techniques, that is literal translation (82 data), modulation (34 data), adaptation (9 data), transposition (9 data), amplification (7 data), established equivalent (12 data), calque (7), reduction (1 data). Meanwhile, Chat-GPT translators used six translation techniques, that is modulation (26 data), literal translation (15 data), adaptation (4 data), borrowing (2 data), transposition (2 data), amplification (1 data). This data proves that student translators and Chat-GPT have different abilities in choosing the translation techniques used. This study is expected to be useful for readers to emphasize the importance of understanding context and meaning in choosing the right translation technique.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine whether the Compare-Diagnose-Operate (CDO) technique can significantly impact grade 8 SMP N 8 Medan students' capacity to compose narrative texts. This kind of research employs experimental methodology. Pre- and post-tests are used independently in the design. This study compares the abilities of pupils using the CDO (Compare-Diagnose-Operate) technique before and after it was implemented. 24 pupils from the experimental class and 24 classes from the control class of class 8 at SMP N 8 Medan comprise the sample for this study. Data collection the method is administered through a written exam. The results of the study show how the CDO (Compare-Diagnose-Operate) method affects eighth-grade students' writing abilities when it comes to narrative texts. The study's conclusions show that grade 8 students' capacity to create narrative texts at SMP N 8 Medan is impacted by the CDO (Compare-Diagnose-Operate) technique.The higher up average score of pupils who used the CDO technique is evidence of this. based on the t-test data analysis. It is established that the control class has an average of 0.71 and the experimental class has an average of 0.81. The experimental class has a higher standard deviation value than the control class. It indicates that Ha accepted and Ho rejected. It indicates that instruction using the CDO (Compare-Diagnose-Operate) approach has a major impact on eighth grade students' capacity to compose narrative texts at SMP N 8 Medan.The CDO technique has a significant influence on how effectively students interact in writing clases when they are taught narrative texts, because using of the CDO strategy can increase student achievement in writingclass.

Abstract

Penelitian ini mengkaji penerapan media pembelajaran digital, khususnya aplikasi Quizizz, untuk meningkatkan kreativitas dan keterampilan digital siswa di SMKS Dharma Karya Beringin. Penggunaan teknologi dalam pendidikan menjadi semakin penting di era digital, mendorong transformasi metode pembelajaran untuk meningkatkan daya saing dan kualitas hasil belajar. Program Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat (PKM) dari Universitas HKBP Nommensen Medan di SMKS Dharma Karya Beringin bertujuan untuk mengatasi permasalahan kurangnya motivasi belajar dan pemanfaatan teknologi dalam pendidikan. Metode penelitian meliputi perencanaan, uji coba kepada siswa, dan evaluasi serta refleksi terhadap proses pembelajaran yang dilakukan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan Quizizz membuat pembelajaran ekonomi lebih menarik dan interaktif, meningkatkan motivasi dan hasil belajar siswa. Pembelajaran berbasis teknologi ini membantu siswa belajar secara aktif dan memahami teknologi saat ini, serta meningkatkan daya saing mereka. Kegiatan PKM juga melibatkan literasi, pembuatan majalah dinding, dan pembelajaran digital lainnya, yang secara keseluruhan berkontribusi pada pengembangan kreativitas dan keterampilan digital siswa.

Abstract

Tujuan utama penelitian ini adalah untuk meningkatkan kemampuan siswa dalam menulis teks narasi dengan menggunakan Aplikasi Wattpad pada siswa kelas XI SMA Swasta HKBP 2 Tarutung. Penelitian ini dilakukan di SMA Swasta HKBP 2 Tarutung sebagai subjek penelitian. Subjek penelitian berjumlah 22 siswa per kelas. Dalam pelaksanaan penelitian tindakan ini. Peneliti juga berkolaborasi dengan guru bahasa Inggris dalam melaksanakan tindakan. Data yang diperoleh dalam penelitian ini sebagian besar bersifat kuantitatif dan eksperimental. Analisis terhadap nilai siswa menunjukkan bahwa terjadi peningkatan terus menerus pada rata-rata nilai siswa pada setiap tahapan tes. Hasil evaluasi menunjukkan nilai t hitung (3,53) melebihi nilai tabel (2,021) pada taraf signifikansi 0,05 dengan derajat kebebasan (df) sebesar 42. Temuan ini menunjukkan bahwa hipotesis alternatif (Ha) yang diajukan dalam penelitian ini adalah penelitian ini dapat diterima, sedangkan hipotesis nol (Ho) harusnya ditolak. Hal ini terjadi karena nilai t uji (3,53) lebih besar dari nilai t tabel (2,021). Penggunaan Aplikasi Wattpad membuktikan manfaatnya bagi siswa dalam proses pembelajaran bahasa Inggris. Aplikasi ini menyajikan berbagai alat dan latihan yang menantang sehingga dapat menjaga motivasi siswa dalam belajar bahasa Inggris, tanpa merasa bosan. Oleh karena itu, dapat diambil kesimpulan bahwa penggunaan Aplikasi Wattpad sangat dianjurkan dalam pembelajaran menulis cerita bahasa Inggris di kelas XI SMA. Hal ini diperkuat dengan hasil penilaian siswa yang melebihi nilai KKM yang ditetapkan yaitu 75.

Abstract

Bahasa adalah alat penting yang kita gunakan dalam kehidupan sehari-hari. Secara umum, bahasa digunakan sebagai alat untuk menyampaikan informasi. Dalam menggunakan bahasa, penutur harus memperhatikan bahasa yang digunakan. Hal ini hendaknya dilakukan pengguna bahasa untuk menghindari atau meminimalisir kesalahan dalam menyampaikan informasi kepada pendengar. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui jenis tindak tutur dan strategi kesantunan apa yang digunakan oleh calon guru ketika mengajar kelas daring. Penelitian ini diharapkan dapat memberikan gambaran bagaimana tindak tutur dan strategi kesantunan dapat mempengaruhi kegiatan pendidikan. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan menggunakan dua langkah. Langkah pertama peneliti adalah mengamati bagaimana calon guru menggunakan strategi tindak tutur dan kesantunan di kelas online. Kemudian peneliti akan melakukan wawancara kepada subjek penelitian atau guru prajabatan untuk memverifikasi data yang telah diamati. Dalam melakukan penelitian ini, peneliti menggunakan dua teori sebagai landasan penelitian. Teori pertama adalah teori jenis tindak tutur Searle dan teori strategi kesopanan Brown dan Levinson. Penelitian menemukan bahwa jika calon guru menggunakan lima jenis tindak tutur, yaitu representatif, direktif, komisif, ekspresif, dan direktif. Penelitian ini juga menemukan bahwa guru calon guru lebih banyak menggunakan tindak tutur direktif dalam pengajaran di kelas daring dibandingkan jenis tindak tutur lainnya. Selain penggunaan tindak tutur, penelitian ini juga menemukan bahwa calon guru juga menggunakan empat strategi kesantunan dalam mengajar kelas online. Keempat jenis strategi kesantunan tersebut adalah botak-onrecord, kesantunan positif, kesantunan negatif, dan off-record.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to describe (1) what are the text flow structures of the of students' English speech performance and (2) what is the non-text flow structure of the students' English speech performance in the Seminar on ELT course. Methods: This study was observed using an anthropolinguistic approach using analytical parameters, namely interconnection, valuability, and sustainability. A qualitative paradigm with an ethnographic model is used in this study by applying twelve steps both in interview and observation methods. Findings: The text flow structure of the of students' English speech performance has three important patterns, namely the introduction, body, and conclusion. It has the smallest elements called substructure. The substructure, there are greeting, question, and declarative sentences found in introduction. The substructure, there are transitional speech, guess, question, declarative, and explanatory sentences found in closing, and greeting closing found in closing part. In the non-text flow structure of the students' English speech performance found co-text and context elements, they are cultural, social, situational, and ideological contexts. In co-text found kinesics and prosemics. Conclusions: The text flow structure is the basic framework of a text in forming a coherent whole. The text and non-text flow structure is related to the text framework which is arranged regularly from beginning to end starting with the introduction into the conclusion. Both the text and non-text flow structures are very necessary to improve students’ ability to communicate well and creatively.

Abstract

Penelitian ini menganalisis tindak tutur ilokusi dalam pidato Prabowo dan mengungkapkan temuan yang signifikan dalam penggunaannya. Sebanyak 74 ujaran yang dikategorikan sebagai tindak tutur diidentifikasi. Hasil analisis menunjukkan 35 ujaran asertif (47,29%), 8 ujaran komisif (5,71%), 20 ujaran direktif (10%), dan 11 ujaran ekspresif (8,57%), dan 6 ujaran deklaratif (8,1%). Dengan demikian, pertanyaan penelitian pertama terjawab. Interpretasi penggunaan bahasa Prabowo dan makna yang disampaikan menjawab pertanyaan penelitian kedua. Analisis data juga menentukan dominasi ujaran asertif, dengan total 35 ujaran, yang menjawab pertanyaan penelitian ketiga. Penelitian ini menyoroti sifat interaktif antara pembicara dan pendengar, memberikan wawasan tentang gaya komunikasi Prabowo, yang sebagian besar bersifat informatif. Penggunaan pernyataan yang kuat dan tegas mempengaruhi pemahaman dan respons pendengar. Tidak adanya pidato deklaratif menunjukkan fokus pada penyampaian pesan daripada pernyataan resmi. Secara keseluruhan, penelitian ini meningkatkan pemahaman tentang gaya, fokus, dan tujuan komunikasi Prabowo melalui tindak ilokusi.
