Abstract

Pelafalan kata bahasa Inggris memiliki perbedaan yang signifikan dengan bahasa Indonesia, dalam bahasa Inggris terdapat huruf yang tidak diucapkan, sementara pada bahasa Indonesia tidak memiliki aturan yang demikian. Hal ini menyebabkan pembelajar mengalami kesulitan dalam melafalkan kata kata bahasa Inggris. Sehingga, akan berpengaruh terhadap kualitas berbicara dan dapat menyulitkan pendengar untuk memahami arti dari kata yang diucapkan. Tujuan dari penelitian ini untuk mengetahui jenis-jenis kesalahan pengucapan, kesalahan yang paling umum, dan faktor yang menyebabkan siswa melakukan kesalahan saat mengucapkan huruf diam bahasa Inggris pada siswakelas 3 SMA Swasta Advent Simbolon. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan terdapat dua jenis kesalahan: kesalahan pre-sistematis dengan jumlah 142 (69%) dan Sistematis dengan jumlah 64 (31%). Jumlah kesalahan terbanyak terdapat pada kategori pre-sistematis sebesar 69%. Hasil penelitian juga menunjukkan beberapa faktor yang menyebabkan siswa kesulitan mengucapkan kata-kata yang mengandung huruf diam: kurangnya paparan kosa kata bahasa Inggris, kurangnya motivasi siswa dalam belajar bahasa Inggris, dan kurang maksimalnya peran guru mengajar pengucapan pada siswa. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa terdapat dua jenis kesalahan yang dilakukan oleh siswa dalam mengucapkan huruf diam: Pre-Systematis dan Sistematis, yang mana jenis kesalahan yang paling dominanadalahpre-systematis. Hal tersebut disebabkan oleh beberapa faktor yang berasal dari siswa dan guru.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the types of figurative language used in the album Healer by Casting Crowns and the dominant types of figurative language found in the album. The method used in this research is the descriptive-qualitative method. This research uses Harun's theory (2019). The researcher found seven types of figurative language used in the album Healer by Casting Crowns, such as hyperbole, irony, metaphor, personification, simile, litotes, metonymy and Synecdoche. This study aims data was collected by reading the lyrics of the album song Healer by Casting Crowns. On the album Healer by Casting Crowns, there is hyperbole (7 data points), personification (1 data ), and irony (1 data ), Sarcasm (0), Synecdoche (3 data), Satire (1 data), Metaphor (0 data), Metonymy (18 data), Simile (0 data), and Litotes (1 data). This study found that the most dominant types of figurative language were metonymy with a percentage of 56.25%, followed by hyperbole with a percentage of 21.85%, personification (3.13%), irony (3.13%), sarcasm (0%), synecdoche (9.38%), satire (3.13%), metaphor (0%), metonymy (56.25%), simile (0%), and litotes (3.13%). Of these percentages, researchers can conclude that the most dominant data is metonymy (56.25%), and the smallest are three types of figurative language, namely sarcasm (0%), metaphor (0%), and simile (0%). Abstract

The Audio Lingual (MAL) method refers to a very large learning competence in the ability to speak English. PPA Filadelpia Medan Foundation is an educational foundation that is oriented towards the progress of students to make children who are moral and achievers. This foundation also accommodates the children of the community who have a weak or underprivileged economy. Teachers who teach students have been set to become teachers who have a holistic spirit and dreams. Teachers who teach English and non-English subjects are very interested in learning English in order to develop their students. The trainer for Community Service Activities has a big heart to develop this foundation through English speaking training for teachers and foundation employees. The results conclude that the implementation of PKM activities starts from May 2021 to July 2021 for 12 times with meeting times with a total of 16 participants with system clusters. The Audio Lingual (MAL) method with a combination of Screen Cast O Matic becomes an instrument to carry out face-to-face training and online learning. The results of the observations prove that under the answers and learning outcomes through the audio lingual approach there is a tendency to learn, speak English and explore sources and information that are shown. This is evidenced by the statements of the respondents to prepare them in the world market which must be full of creativity that is flexible, directed, and achieved with high quality..

Abstract

The aims of this study are to assess student achievement in reading comprehension through the implementation of the problem-based learning (PBL) method and to determine whether this method has a significant impact on students’ achievements in understanding of idioms founds on Agatha Christine’s novel for 11th grade in SMA N 1 Onanrunggu. The research used experimental-quantitative design with the population is 11th grade students at SMA N 1 Onanrunggu, with has five parallel classes and total the students are 145. Two classes were selected as samples, namely XI MIPA 1 and XII MIPA 2, where XI MIPA 2 became a group of experiments taught using the problem based learning method, while XI Mipa 1 became a control group taught by the conventional method. The data collection used a double-choice test and data analysis used the t-test. The results of the study showed that there was an increase in student values from pre-test to post-test in the experimental group. Statistical analysis shows that t-observed values are greater than t-table values (2.5 > 2,000) at the significance level of 0.05. This indicates that the zero hypothesis (Ho) is rejected and the alternative hypotheses (Ha) are accepted. Thus, it can be concluded that the use of problem-based learning methods has a significant influence on student performance in reading comprehension. This conclusion confirms the positive and significant impact of the use of problem-based learning methods in the context of the reading comprehension of eleventh grade of SMA N 1 Onanrunggu.

Abstract

Sikap bullying menjadi salah satu penghambat sebuah kesuksesan jika dihadapi dengan respons negatif. Namun, berbeda jika merespons hal tersebut dengan lebih positif, penuh rasa percaya dengan kemampuan sendiri. Maka hasilnya akan sukses dan memberikan motivasi bagi orang lain untuk bisa menjadi orang sukses tanpa melupakan masa lalu. Bullying menjadi penghambat untuk kesuksesan, buktinya orang sukses pun masih mendapatkan prilaku bulying tersebut yang membuat ia harus lebih keras lagi untuk berusaha dalam membuktikan mimpinya. Maka dari itu, perilaku bullying seharusnya diberantas dengan memberikan pendidikan moral kepada anak-anak sejak kecil. Orang tua juga harus mengingatkan bahwa bercanda dengan menghina orang lain adalah perbuatan yang tidak boleh dilakukan. Membiasakan anak berbuat baik dan saling menyayangi. Karena dampak dari bullying sangat besar dalam pengaruh kedewasaan seseorang dalam meraih impian dan cita-cita hidupnya. Terutama jika terjadi pada seorang anak kecil. Menyikapi permasalahan tersebut, penulis telah merancang beberapa metode, teknik, dan strategi untuk meningkatkan kosakata untuk kebutuhan remaja dan muda mudi.

Abstract

The aims of this research were to determine the the type deixis and the most dominating type of deixis found in students' English Textbook  For The Eight Grade of Junior High School. The design of this study is descriptive qualitative method. The source of data of this study was the conversations contained deixis found in students' English Textbook "When English Rings A Bell" For The Eight Grade of Junior High School. The technique of collecting data used by the resercher was observation with technique of taking note techniques. The data was analyzed By applying  the  theory  of  creswell  (2007) and to  classifying  the  types  of deixis  use  the  theory  of Yule  (1996).  The results show that there were three types of deixis found in students' English Textbook "When English Rings A Bell" for the eight grade of Junior High School, namely person deixis, spatial deixis, and temporal deixis. There were a total of 472 deixis data that contained deixis. Among them there were person deixis was 389 data and has a percentage of 82,41%, spatial deixis was  37 data and has a percentage of 7,84% and temporal deixis was 46 data and has a percentage of  9,75%.

Abstract

The difficulties of writing research paper devokes grammatical metaphors in the perspectives of SFL to be applied in academic writing. This paper presents the process type and functions of ideational grammatical metaphor towards the students' writing research paper. The research design was applied by descriptive qualitative deployed on the English students’ writing. The findings deployed the process type of nominalization in ideational grammatical metaphor on the students' research papers was dominant in the material process and relational process. The function realization of deployment in transcategorisation of process to thing is the highest frequency on the clauses and followed to transcategorisation of process to quality. The frequency shows that several weaknesses encompassing the ability to employ grammatical meanings and the use of lexical cohesion. The research present a strategy for English learners and teachers to enhance writing qualities and language detections as an innovation in managing lexical varieties.

Abstract

This research discusses the analysis of metaphors contained in the lyrics of James Arthur's song on his 3rd album entitled "You" in 2019. The purpose of this study is to classify the types of metaphors and see the most dominant types of metaphors. This research was conducted using a descriptive qualitative method. The data this research underline song lyrics that contain metaphors. The song lyrics are taken from James Arthur’s YouTube account and also from the Google site obtained on March 26, 2024, at 08.00 pm. The data collection instruments used were observation and documentation. Data were obtained from 12 James Arthur songs. The author found 85 data in James' song lyrics. The types of metaphors contained in James Arthur's song lyrics are active metaphor 19 data, inactive metaphor 11 data, subjective metaphor 25 data, asymmetric metaphor 10 data, dead metaphor 11 data, and mimetic metaphor 9 data. The most dominant type is subjective metaphor, which is 25 data. Therefore, subjective metaphor is found more in 12 songs of James Arthur in his 3rd album “You” in 2019. The benefits of this research for the state and nation, especially in the field of teaching is that teachers can teach using subjective metaphors, that is teaching or interacting with students by using more feelings in the teaching and learning process.

Abstract

This thesis discusses the analysis of metaphors contained on natural advertisements. The purpose of this research is to classify the types of metaphors contained on natural advertisements and find the most dominant metaphor on the advertisements. This research was conducted using qualitative method. The author reads and understands the contents of the advertisements that consist of 10 advertisements to obtain data. The data collection instrument is observation. The data is obtained from advertisement whose topics are about nature. The author found 114 data on natural advertisements. The types of metaphors contained on natural advertisements are representatives consisting of concretive metaphor 64 data, animistic metaphor 2 data, humanizing metaphor 45 data, and synaesthetic metaphor 3 data. From the research, the author concludes that concretive metaphor is the most dominant and frequently used in natural advertisements. The benefits of this research for the state and nation, especially for students and English teachers are that this research can be used as a source of teaching material, a source of students in learning more about metaphor, and for further authors, especially in linguistic that analyze one-way objects such as advertisements, art like poems, drama, and songs.

Abstract

This research aims to determine students’ metacognitive and reading comprehension in narrative text. This study investigates whether metacognitive awareness affects students' reading comprehension of narrative text at SMA N 3 Binjai. This research applied a quantitative approach, the population was the second-grade students at SMA N 3 Binjai in the 2024 academic year, and the sample was XI MIA 1 and XI MIA 2. The first sample involves 34 students for the experimental group (XI MIA 1) and the second sample involves 36 students for the control group (XI MIA 2). The instruments for collecting data were tests and questionnaires. There were pre-tests and post-tests for collecting data and the researcher gave pre-tests and post-tests to both classes. Based on the data, it was found that the result of the t-test (t-calculated) was higher than the t-table value at a significance level of p = 0,05 (2,1 > 1,995). Therefore, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. This indicates that metacognitive awareness was significantly influence the reading comprehension achievement of second-grade students at SMA N 3 Binjai.
