Abstract

Abstract

In contemporary Indonesian society, religious groups face critical challenges in maintaining cohesive relationships amidst increasing individualism and political engagement opportunities. The tendency toward individuation—where members prioritize personal interests over collective goals—threatens to erode the foundational bonds of voluntarism and shared commitment that characterize these communities. This research aims to explore the concept of intersubjectivity, particularly Gabriel Marcel's philosophy of co-esse (being-with), as a restorative framework for addressing disputive relationships within religious groups, while synthesizing insights from Edmund Husserl's empathy and Martin Buber's dialogical philosophy. The study employs a qualitative method based on literature review with a descriptive-analytical philosophical-theological approach, utilizing hermeneutic interpretation and thematic content analysis of primary philosophical texts and contemporary empirical studies on Indonesian religious group dynamics. The analysis reveals that Husserlian empathy provides the foundation for recognizing shared reality through analogical apperception, Buberian dialogue distinguishes authentic I–Thou encounters from instrumental I–It relationships, and Marcelian intersubjectivity offers the most comprehensive framework by grounding human existence in relational ontology rather than isolated individualism. The research concludes that Marcel's intersubjectivity transforms relationships from strategic utility to existential co-existence, providing both diagnostic clarity and normative guidance for religious communities navigating political complexities. The implications extend theoretically by bridging existential phenomenology with empirical social analysis, practically by offering ethical frameworks for group governance and leadership formation, and policy-wise by suggesting governmental approaches that respect communal character rather than incentivizing instrumental participation, thereby strengthening both religious group integrity and broader social cohesion.

Abstract

This article aims to criticize the improbability argument put forth by Dawkins, which serves as the central thesis in the new atheism. Dawkins uses this thesis to justify religion as the root of evil and violence, while also forms the basis for the denial of the existence of God. The improbability argument fundamentally has some issues ontologically, epistemologically, and ethically. Dawkins constructs the improbability argument by referring to his explanation in “The Ultimate Boeing 747” and the theory of natural selection, in which he considers creation from nothingness to be as improbable as the spontaneous formation of a Boeing 747 from a tornado’s debris. Dawkins also criticizes the NOMA perspective that positions Science and Theology as equals. Through the framework of critical realism, this article demonstrates the philosophical problems in Dawkins’ improbability argument, which reduces reality (ontology) based on subjective perception (epistemology), and thus obscuring the uniqueness of natural phenomenon and negating the existence of God. Alternative ethical perspectives regarding religion and God are presented to address Dawkins’ accusations to religion as a source of evil and violence.

Abstract

This paper examines the meaning of the song lyrics “Plastik Kita” by the music group Sore from the perspective of perennialism, particularly the metaphysical thought within the esoteric framework of Seyyed Hossein Nasr’s philosophy. The study focuses on the dimensions of meaning and symbolism in the lyrics as an expression of critique toward modernism. By employing a symbolic interpretive approach and esoteric epistemology, this paper explores how the song’s lyrics convey a spiritual message rooted in Nasr’s Divine metaphysical principles. Emphasis is placed on the critique of modern humanity’s detachment from its Divine source, as well as on the affirmation of the need to restore the sacred relationship between humanity, nature, and the Transcendent Reality. The analysis reveals that Plastik Kita serves as a contemporary expression of esoteric wisdom, articulating a profound critique of the spiritual crisis of the modern age.

Abstract

Religious criticism is an integral part of a multicultural society, yet it can become sensitive amid debates over freedom of expression and religious respect. Recent cases, such as online disputes between preachers and the rise of ex-Muslim voices, demonstrate how religious criticism can strengthen dialogue or deepen divisions. This study aims to distinguish two contrasting forms of religious criticism in the contemporary public sphere: destructive criticism, which reinforces polarization and hostility, and dialogic criticism, which encourages transformation of understanding and increases tolerance between religious communities. The study adopts Mikael Stenmark’s framework of forms of religious criticism. It examines two influential cases: the Apostate Prophet, whose online content often shapes public perception through secular, confrontational criticism of Islam, and Husein Ja’far Al Hadar, a preacher whose inclusive and dialogic approach promotes tolerance. The study uses qualitative digital ethnography and discourse analysis to examine religious criticism in online media. The two contrasting figures were deliberately selected based on their distinct digital influence and communication styles. Data from YouTube dialogues and podcasts are analysed to identify patterns of constructive and destructive criticism. The findings suggest that dialogical criticism, which encourages understanding and tolerance, has greater potential to maintain interfaith harmony in Indonesia’s pluralistic society.
