Abstract

Abstract

This study examines the ideational analysis of Lauren Singer’s speech using Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) theory as proposed by Halliday and Matthiessen (2014). The objectives of this study are to identify the types of ideational processes found in Lauren Singer’s speech, determine the most dominant ideational process, and describe the reasons why this dominant process appears more frequently in the speech. This study employs a qualitative descriptive research method. The research data were obtained from sentences that had been broken down into clauses discussing a zero-waste lifestyle. The results indicate that there are six types of processes, with a total of 373 instances found in Lauren Singer’s speech. The most dominant process is the material process, comprising 179 clauses (48.0%), indicating that the speech frequently describes concrete actions or activities. This was followed by relational processes, comprising 115 clauses (30.8%), and mental processes, comprising 67 clauses (18.0%). Meanwhile, verbal processes were found in 8 clauses (2.1%), while behavioral and existential processes were each found in 2 clauses (0.5%). An analysis of Lauren Singer’s speech shows that the material process is the dominant process, indicating that the speaker emphasizes actions the audience can take to adopt a zero-waste lifestyle. The purpose of this is to provide insight and encourage the audience to change their behavior in daily life in order to reduce waste and protect the environment. The reasons why the material process is the dominant process are as follows: first, this speech focuses on concrete actions; second, the purpose of this speech is to persuade or influence; third, this speech is supported by quantitative data

Abstract

The use of slang in movies represents informal, expressive, and culturally bound language that often creates challenges in translation, particularly in subtitles. Slang expressions are commonly used to reflect natural conversation, characterize speakers, and convey emotional nuance. However, many slang expressions do not have direct equivalents in the target language, which can result in shifts in meaning, tone, and cultural context. This issue becomes more complex when translating British slang into Indonesian, as both languages differ significantly in terms of cultural references, social usage, and linguistic structure. Therefore, it is important to examine how slang expressions are translated and what strategies are applied to maintain their meaning and function in subtitles. This study aims to identify the types of slang expressions found in the movie My Oxford Year and to analyze the translation strategies used in translating those expressions into Indonesian subtitles. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method. The data were collected from the English and Indonesian subtitle files of the movie, focusing on 35 selected slang expressions that appear throughout the dialogue. The data were analyzed using classification of slang by Tony Thorne and translation strategies by Mona Baker. The findings reveal that various types of slang are used in the movie, including colloquial slang, taboo slang, youth slang, occupational slang, and creative or innovative slang, with colloquial slang as the most dominant type. In terms of translation strategies, paraphrase using related words, cultural substitution, and translation by a more neutral word are the most frequently applied strategies. Overall, the study indicates that the translator tends to prioritize clarity, readability, and naturalness in the target language, although some stylistic and cultural nuances of the original slang expressions are inevitably reduced.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the types of illocutionary acts used by the main character in the movie Heads of State (2025) and to identify the dominant type of illocutionary act found in the movie. This research is based on pragmatic theory, particularly speech act theory proposed by Austin (1962) and further developed by Searle (1979). The study uses a qualitative descriptive method to analyze the utterances produced by the main character in the movie. The data were obtained from the main character’s dialogue in several selected scenes of Heads of State (2025). The data were collected by watching the movie repeatedly, identifying the relevant utterances, and transcribing the dialogues. The analysis of the data was conducted using Searle’s classification of illocutionary acts, which consists of assertive, directive, commissive, expressive, and declarative acts. The findings reveal that all five types of illocutionary acts are found in the main character’s utterances in the movie. These types include assertive, directive, commissive, expressive, and declarative acts. Among these types, assertive illocutionary acts are the most dominant type used by the main character. Assertive acts are frequently used by the character to convey information, express beliefs, provide explanations, and describe situations occurring in the story. The dominance of assertive acts indicates that the main character often functions as a source of information in the development of the movie’s narrative. Keywords: assertive; Heads of State (2025); illocutionary acts; pragmatics; speech acts.

Abstract

This study investigates the effect of using the TED Talks application on the listening skills mastery of second-semester students in the English Education Study Program at the University of HKBP Nommensen. TED Talks, as an authentic multimedia platform, provides learners with real-life English exposure through engaging videos covering diverse topics. A quantitative experimental method was employed, involving two groups: Class B as the experimental group and Class A as the control group. The experimental group, consisting of 25 students, was taught using TED Talks, while the control group of 31 students received instruction through conventional methods. Both groups took a pre-test and a post-test to measure the development of their listening skills. The findings revealed a significant improvement in the experimental group’s average score, increasing from 59.6 to 70,24, compared to the control group’s rise from 57.16 to 64.38. The t-test analysis produced a t-observed value of 2.571, which exceeded the t-table value of 2.005 at a 0.05 significance level, indicating a statistically significant difference. These results support the alternative hypothesis (Ha) and demonstrate that the use of TED Talks positively impacts students’ listening skills. Therefore, TED Talks can be considered an effective and innovative tool for enhancing listening instruction in EFL university settings
