Abstract

This paper is a qualitative descriptive study that aims to describe the concept of color in Sundanese. In this study, the authors used the free-to-speak listening method without involving the participants. To support data collection, the author involves intuitive knowledge. In the method of analysis, the writer uses referential methods and semantic methods to describe and compare the relationship between metaphorical expressions as the source and the intended meaning of the target. The data taken are fragments of song lyrics, fragments of sentences from short stories, and proverbs. As a result, the authors found the colors hideung, beureum, bodas, konéng, héjo and blue in the concept of color as a Sundanese metaphor.Keywords: Metaphors, cognitive semantics, Sundanese language, conceptual metaphors

Abstract

This research examines the use of a snake and ladder board game implemented in SMK N 1 Banyumas. This research aimed to explore students’ perceptions of the use of a snake and ladder board game to facilitate vocabulary learning for the students participating in the English Club of SMK N 1 Banyumas. The researcher formulated two different issues in this study: (1) The students’ perceptions of the implementation of a snake and ladder board game for English Club students’ SMK N 1 Banyumas and (2) How the use of snake and ladder board game could enhance the English Club students’ vocabulary mastery at SMA SMK N 1 Banyumas. A case study as the research design was applied in this research. The research participants were thirty-three (33) students and an English teacher of the English Club at SMK N 1 Banyumas. In collecting data, the researcher conducted observation, distributed questionnaires, and conducted interviews with students and an English teacher of the English Club. The data were presented in the form of narrative descriptions. This study indicates that the participants were interested in using a snake and ladder board game. In fact, the participants realised that the use of a snake and ladder game could encourage students’ ability to enrich their vocabulary and suggested that the game is used for learning vocabulary in class.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bermula ketika peneliti ingin melihat tingkat keterbacaan Novel asli yang berjudul Kaya Tujuh Turunan yang ditulis oleh Kevin Kwan dan di alih bahasa oleh Cindy Kristanto ini apakah memiliki keterbacaan yang baik karena pemilihan kata yang ada di dalam novel tersebut mudah untuk dipahami. Maka dari itu, tujuan dari penelitian kali ini adalah untuk mengetahui seberapa mudah atau sukarnya teks bacaan Novel Kaya Tujuh Turunan bagi pembaca di tingkat remaja. Hal ini di dukung oleh kuisioner yang ditujukan kepada siswa remaja di SMA Bruderan Purwokerto sebagai subyek dari penelitian ini. Hal lain yang membuktikan bahwa Novel Kaya Tujuh Turunan ini memiliki tingkat keterbacaan yang baik dibuktikan dengan menggunakan diagram fry. Setelah dilakukan penelitian dengan menggunakan metode kuisioner dan juga diagram Fry, temuan menunjukan jika dilihat secara lebih mendalam, ada beberapa kata yang ditemukan memiliki makna yang tidak tepat apabila dilihat dari bahasa sumber ke bahasa sasaran. Peneliti juga menyimpulkan bahwa adanya kesepadanan makna yang berasal dari segi budaya dan sosial yang ada sehingga penerjemah ingin membuat pembaca lebih mudah untuk membaca novel terjemahan ini.

Abstract

Pandemic of Covid-19 has made teaching and learning process change from conventional into digital. With “Kurikulum Merdeka Belajar” teachers can choose any learning method which allows more innovation. The purpose of this study is to improve students' vocabulary mastery through Quizizz. This study was an action research project.  The research was conducted at SMA Bruderan Purwokerto.  The subject of the research was twenty-six students of X MIPA 1. The research was done in two cycles. There were four steps in each cycle. They were planning, action, observation, and reflection. The result shows that the students’ vocabulary mastery is improving. When the pre-test is compared to the post-test, the mean score increases significantly, from 64 to 85. Beside the cognitive ability improves, the affective factors of the learners improve. This is due to their enjoyment and easiness of memorization. Quizizz can be one of the learning media that can make the students more enjoyable in learning English especially vocabulary since the students can memorize and get new vocabulary much easier.

Abstract

Learning outcomes can be achieved with suitable teaching materials. The integration and effectiveness of teaching materials greatly influence the successful implementation of Business English. The long-term goal of this research and development is to develop 21st-century Competency-based Business English materials. The design of this study used the research and development (R&D) of Borg and Gall (1983) with simplification into four stages, namely: introduction, development, trial test, and dissemination which were held within six months. The data collected is tested for validity through triangulation tests by conducting forum group discussions with experts and colleagues. The research subjects are lecturers and students of English at Universitas Nasional Karangturi. Months 1 – 2 are for conducting preliminary activities, months 3 – 4 are for designing the assessment draft, and months 5 – 6 are for testing and dissemination. The results of this study are Business English teaching materials, including Job Interviews, Business English conversations, Business English Podcast, English for Presentation, Curriculum Vitae, and Application Letters as preparation for professional career development. The stages and results of the research are recommended to be a reference for teachers, lecturers, developers of teaching materials, and researchers in developing and teaching business English, especially for professional career development with steps through material development, assessment, and evaluation. It can conclude that the 21st-century competency-based Business English teaching materials that are produced trigger students to be more active in communication have high creativity, critical thinking, and good cooperation, and the students can learn by combining practical business knowledge directly.

Abstract

Dyslexia is a specific learning disability characterized by difficulties in reading. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of flashcard learning media in improving reading comprehension between ages 8 and 11 in the group of children identified with dyslexia. The current research used one group experimental design with five children as participants. Based on the results of the study, showed that there was an influence of flashcard learning media on improving the reading ability of dyslexic children. The results of data analysis using t-test showed that the post-test score (M=20,8) was significantly higher than the pre-test score (M=10,4). Analyses of the whole sample indicated that levels of reading comprehension had improved. The finding of this study could be discussed that using flashcard learning media had a positive effect on reading comprehension in dyslexia children. The Flashcard media were designed to be colourful and easy to understand could stimulate children’s willingness to learn and read.

Abstract

In Cross-Language Typology Studies, there are types of language universality to the languages in it. The focus of this research is that the researcher wants to see what affixes can form verb nominalization in Banyumasan Javanese and also identify the semantic function that results from each of these affixes in Banyumasan Javanese. The results of this study indicate that Banyumasan Javanese (BJB) and Central Javanese (BJS) have nominals in the form of prefixes, suffixes, and confixes. BJB has a variety of types equivalent to BJS. However, in these two languages, both have the nominal confix -an.

Abstract

Inspired by the approach of “Teaching Unplugged: Dogme in English Language Teaching” developed by Luke Meddings and Scott Thornbury, this theoretical research introduces and offers a conceptual design of teacher training intended to be relevant to novice Indonesian EFL teachers, especially those working at schools located in the most remote and disadvantaged areas of Indonesia. The training is designed based on the theoretical framework of the approach and critical reviews of several related empirical studies. This article, therefore, focuses on exploring the applications of the approach by examining some other research including the most recent ones about the approach, and investigating its relevance to the context of English education at the most disadvantaged schools in Indonesia. The practical stages and syllabus are also presented in the article so that both teachers as participants and teacher educators can easily follow and understand how the materials can be implemented in their teaching contexts. Considering the theoretical-based materials and well-planned activities that the training offers, novice EFL teachers, after completing the program, are expected to be able to improve their both language and pedagogical skills that are needed in their school contexts and in line with the recent curriculum, the Merdeka curriculum.

Abstract

LKP Bahasa Inggris menjadi wadah penting bagi individu untuk mengembangkan keterampilan berbahasa Inggris mereka. Dengan memahami kebutuhan dan harapan peserta LKP, pelatihan pengajaran bahasa Inggris ini akan dirancang untuk memberikan pendekatan yang lebih kontekstual, menyenangkan, dan aplikatif. Sasaran pelaksanaan kegiatan Pelatihan “Albibek Teacher Professional Development” ini merupakan bentuk pengabdian kepada masyarakat untuk memfasilitasi dan memberikan kesempatan belajar dan berlatih kepada para pengajar di lembaga LKP bahasa Inggris Albibek Semarang. Manfaat yang diperoleh dari kegiatan ini, para peserta yang merupakan tutor LKP bahasa Inggris Albibek Semarang semakin mendapat pengetahuan bagaimana cara mengajar Bahasa Inggris yang mudah dan menyenangkan.

Abstract

Tujuan dari kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini adalah untuk mempersiapkan dosen Universitas Nasional Karangturi (UNKARTUR) dalam menghadapi Tes Kemampuan Bahasa Inggris (TKBI) yang menjadi salah satu syarat sertifikasi dosen. Metode yang digunakan adalah penelitian kuasi-eksperimen dengan pendekatan pre-test dan post-test untuk mengukur perubahan kemampuan bahasa Inggris dosen setelah pelatihan. Pelatihan dilaksanakan dalam 14 pertemuan dengan materi mencakup listening comprehension, structure and written expression, dan reading comprehension. Hasil dari kegiatan ini menunjukkan bahwa seluruh peserta mengalami peningkatan skor pada tes TOEFL setelah mengikuti pelatihan, dengan peningkatan terbesar sebesar 45.16%. Kesimpulannya, program pelatihan TKBI ini efektif dalam meningkatkan kemampuan bahasa Inggris dosen, yang berdampak positif pada persiapan mereka untuk sertifikasi dosen serta kualitas pengajaran dan penelitian di universitas.
