Abstract

The British people introduced their language to the Americans when they reached and occupied the lands of the indigenous people by sea between the 16th and 17th centuries. The British ways of communication and mass media played a very significant role in affecting dialect differences and modifying pronunciation and vocabulary into English standards, known as the received pronunciation (RP). This study is aimed to identify: (1) the students’ perception towards British accents in speaking class and (2) the particular impacts of the accents on students’ dialects when used in a classroom. This research applied a mixed-method, the sequential explanatory with the advanced quantitative (explanatory) and then a qualitative. In other words, the results of this research are made ​​in the form of quantitative data and supported by qualitative data in the form of narrative depth. The participants were non-English students who had a less understanding of British accents. To collect data, observations on some of the participants’ documents (archives, photographs, and field notes) and questionnaire, followed by in-depth interviews with the students. Furthermore, to get the validity of its findings, the triangulation validity of the data is discussed with researchers and colleagues who understand the areas studied. British Accents are expected to become a motivation and the standard of its assessment-based speaking skill level.

Abstract

Extensive reading (ER) needs to be easy, enjoyable and lots of reading (Nation & Macalister, 2020). When learners read extensively, they read for pleasure and recreation, instead of studying vocabulary, grammar, idioms and looking up texts. This study seeks to assess students' understanding of ER through writing tasks, in other words, ER needs to be task-based. This study was a descriptive qualitative by using observations, questionnaires, and interviews as data collection. The participants in this study were students in the third semester of English education department at Universitas Nasional Karangturi Semarang who attended the extensive reading class. As a result, most students found it easy to use the writing task as an exercise, either while the student was reading the book or after they had finished reading the book. Second, the students were willing to be involved in creating portraits of the characters and writing illustration descriptions, including descriptions of the selected features. The research stages and results are recommended as a reference for teachers, lecturers and researchers in assessing reading literacy.

Abstract

Learning outcomes can be achieved with suitable teaching materials. The integration and effectiveness of teaching materials greatly influence the successful implementation of Business English. The long-term goal of this research and development is to develop 21st-century Competency-based Business English materials. The design of this study used the research and development (R&D) of Borg and Gall (1983) with simplification into four stages, namely: introduction, development, trial test, and dissemination which were held within six months. The data collected is tested for validity through triangulation tests by conducting forum group discussions with experts and colleagues. The research subjects are lecturers and students of English at Universitas Nasional Karangturi. Months 1 – 2 are for conducting preliminary activities, months 3 – 4 are for designing the assessment draft, and months 5 – 6 are for testing and dissemination. The results of this study are Business English teaching materials, including Job Interviews, Business English conversations, Business English Podcast, English for Presentation, Curriculum Vitae, and Application Letters as preparation for professional career development. The stages and results of the research are recommended to be a reference for teachers, lecturers, developers of teaching materials, and researchers in developing and teaching business English, especially for professional career development with steps through material development, assessment, and evaluation. It can conclude that the 21st-century competency-based Business English teaching materials that are produced trigger students to be more active in communication have high creativity, critical thinking, and good cooperation, and the students can learn by combining practical business knowledge directly.

Abstract

This article analyzes “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” film Subtitle Translation from English into Bahasa Indonesia. Mona Baker’s Translation Strategy is used to find out the equivalency of the meaning of the dialogs at word and idiom level. The data is collected by observation method with free observation technique and record technique. The analysis is conducted through four steps: first, make data list of sentences based on its appearance through time set for the film. Next, identify the English and Bahasa Indonesia translation, then collect the words and idioms of the dialogs which have non-equivalency conditon. Third, evaluate the translation by using Mona Baker’s translation strategy, and last, make conclusion from the data analysis. As the result, the words and idioms translation mostly fulfill Mona Baker’s Translation strategy approach. However, unavoidably there are words and idioms which wrongly translated, then should need correction.

Abstract

In Cross-Language Typology Studies, there are types of language universality to the languages in it. The focus of this research is that the researcher wants to see what affixes can form verb nominalization in Banyumasan Javanese and also identify the semantic function that results from each of these affixes in Banyumasan Javanese. The results of this study indicate that Banyumasan Javanese (BJB) and Central Javanese (BJS) have nominals in the form of prefixes, suffixes, and confixes. BJB has a variety of types equivalent to BJS. However, in these two languages, both have the nominal confix -an.

Abstract

This study aims to provide educators with evidence-based insights that can inform instructional practices and ultimately enhance students' overall reading experiences. The implementation of literature circles as an instructional strategy has garnered significant attention within educational research, particularly in the domain of promoting student engagement in reading. This study uses a mixed-methods research design that combines both quantitative and qualitative approaches. This approach allows for a comprehensive exploration of the impact of literature circles on student engagement in reading while capturing both numerical trends and nuanced insights. The findings of this research illuminate the transformative potential of literature circles as a pedagogical strategy that positively influenced students’ engagement and enthusiasm. The researcher leverages the insights gleaned from this study to design and implement literature circles that foster collaborative learning, engagement, and intrinsic motivation. In conclusion, this study underscores the value of literature circles as a tool for educators aiming to create compelling and motivating reading experiences. By embracing the collaborative essence of literature circles and harnessing the potential of role assignments, the educators can guide students on a journey of exploration, discovery, and ownership within the realm of literature.

Abstract

This research is to analyze deixis in the movie of Good Neighbors of a SpongeBob SquarePants episode from season four . SpongeBob Square Pants (often referred to simply as SpongeBob) is an American animated television series, created by marine biologist and animator Stephen Hillenburg. Whereas deixis is one of the most important notions in general linguistics and is a vital link between the real-life environment around us such as time frame, physical location, people involved, etc and what we actually say the linguistic terms used. The result describes the kinds of deixis and the referents of deixis in Good Neighbor-SpongeBob Squarepants Transcription which finds many referents that show different kinds of deixis. Finally, From the analysis, it is found that the Pronoun Deixis is often used. In almost all conversation the personal pronoun "you" existed. Its pronoun almost refers to the spongebob and squidward. The other personal pronoun was "we" that refers to spongbob and patrick. Besides, the possessive pronoun "our" has the same interpretation. File pronoun of "I"is used. "I" refers to the actor. The actors are SpongeBob, squidward, patrick and etc. Finally, it is many deixis that is used in Good Neighbor of SpongeBob Squarpants. Thus, many deixises that is found in this transcript.

Abstract

LKP Bahasa Inggris menjadi wadah penting bagi individu untuk mengembangkan keterampilan berbahasa Inggris mereka. Dengan memahami kebutuhan dan harapan peserta LKP, pelatihan pengajaran bahasa Inggris ini akan dirancang untuk memberikan pendekatan yang lebih kontekstual, menyenangkan, dan aplikatif. Sasaran pelaksanaan kegiatan Pelatihan “Albibek Teacher Professional Development” ini merupakan bentuk pengabdian kepada masyarakat untuk memfasilitasi dan memberikan kesempatan belajar dan berlatih kepada para pengajar di lembaga LKP bahasa Inggris Albibek Semarang. Manfaat yang diperoleh dari kegiatan ini, para peserta yang merupakan tutor LKP bahasa Inggris Albibek Semarang semakin mendapat pengetahuan bagaimana cara mengajar Bahasa Inggris yang mudah dan menyenangkan.

Abstract

Tujuan dari kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini adalah untuk mempersiapkan dosen Universitas Nasional Karangturi (UNKARTUR) dalam menghadapi Tes Kemampuan Bahasa Inggris (TKBI) yang menjadi salah satu syarat sertifikasi dosen. Metode yang digunakan adalah penelitian kuasi-eksperimen dengan pendekatan pre-test dan post-test untuk mengukur perubahan kemampuan bahasa Inggris dosen setelah pelatihan. Pelatihan dilaksanakan dalam 14 pertemuan dengan materi mencakup listening comprehension, structure and written expression, dan reading comprehension. Hasil dari kegiatan ini menunjukkan bahwa seluruh peserta mengalami peningkatan skor pada tes TOEFL setelah mengikuti pelatihan, dengan peningkatan terbesar sebesar 45.16%. Kesimpulannya, program pelatihan TKBI ini efektif dalam meningkatkan kemampuan bahasa Inggris dosen, yang berdampak positif pada persiapan mereka untuk sertifikasi dosen serta kualitas pengajaran dan penelitian di universitas.

Abstract

Program layanan bimbingan karir sangat penting bagi perkembangan siswa terutama siswa SMK. Pengembangan program ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kesiapan dan pemahaman karir pada peserta didik. Dengan adanya program bimbingan karir siswa lebih terarah dalam merencanakan karir dan lebih bisa percaya diri dengan melihat potensi pada diri siswa. Program ini dilakukan dengan menggunakan lima tahapan 1) perijinan, 2) Analisis Kebutuhan, 3) Pelaksanaan, 4) Monitoring, dan 5) Evaluasi. Hasil dari pelaksanaan pengembangan program laynan bimbingan karir ini memberikan dampak positif pada siswa dalam perencanaan karir. Siswa bisa memahami potensi pada dirinya dan siswa dapat mengembangkan skill. Bimbingan karir tidak hanya sekedar memberikan respon kepada masalah-masalah yang muncul, akan tetapi juga membantu memperoleh pengetahuan, sikap, dan keterampilan yang diperlukan dalam pekerjaan.
