Abstract

Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) technology such as Chat GPT have had a major impact on the way students access and manage information in an academic environment. Despite its efficiency benefits, concerns have been raised about the potential reduction of critical thinking skills due to the tendency to rely on instant answers. This study aims to evaluate the extent to which the use of Chat GPT is related to the critical thinking skills of undergraduate students of Communication Studies Program at Singaperbangsa University of Karawang. The quantitative research method was used with the Uses and Effect theory as the foundation, and data was obtained from 126 students through the distribution of questionnaires. Analysis using simple linear regression test resulted in a significance value of 0.001 0.05, so it can be concluded that there is a statistically significant influence between the use of Chat GPT and students' critical thinking skills. The findings show a significant positive relationship between the variables studied, with a significance value of 0.001 (p 0.05) with the results of the calculation of the correlation coefficient of 0.631, it can be concluded that the level of relationship between the two main variables in this study, namely the utilization of Chat GPT and students' critical thinking skills, is included in the strong category.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the high intensity of hydrometeorological disasters in Indonesia, specifically the devastating flash floods and landslides that struck three provinces in Sumatra in November 2025. During this crisis phase, mass media plays a crucial role in constructing social reality and influencing public perception regarding the post-disaster management process. This study aims to determine and analyze how the digital news portal Kompas.com framed information related to the crisis recovery progress through an article titled "Dua Bulan Pascabencana Sumatera, Bagaimana Progres Penanganannya?". The method used in this research is a descriptive qualitative method based on the constructivism paradigm. Primary data collection was conducted through news text documentation, supported by secondary data from a literature review. The obtained data were then analyzed using Robert M. Entman's framing analysis model, which examines news texts based on four structural devices: define problems, diagnose causes, make moral judgement, and treatment recommendation. The analysis results show that Kompas.com critically defined the post-disaster reality in Sumatra as a slow, difficult, and unequal recovery process, particularly in the Aceh region. The media diagnosed that the slow recovery was caused by topographical damage, the absence of dams in the upstream areas, and the dilemma of emergency bridges bearing the overload of logistics vehicles. Through its moral judgement, the media performed a watchdog function to demand government accountability and transparency. As a resolution, Kompas.com emphasized the importance of long-term interventions based on structural mitigation, such as the provision of an IDR 74 trillion budget for dam projects. Overall, this news reporting represents the practice of disaster journalism that encourages the creation of human security and future community resilience.

Abstract

This study examines the discourse of a statement by a member of Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives from the Gerindra Party regarding digital fundraising by Ferry Irwandi in the context of flood disasters in Sumatra and Aceh. The study aims to understand how the statement constructs meaning about the roles of the state, civil society, and the digital public sphere. Using a qualitative approach with a critical paradigm, the research employs Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis. The primary data consist of excerpts from Endipat Wijaya’s statement during a parliamentary working meeting, as reported by CNN Indonesia. Analysis focused on Fairclough’s three dimensions: textual, discursive, and sociocultural. Findings indicate that textually, the statement uses diction that diminishes individual contributions, such as “only,” “just,” and “acting as if they are the most.” Discursively, it was produced in an official parliamentary forum and disseminated via mass media, entering public debate. Socioculturally, the statement reflects efforts to maintain state legitimacy amid increasing civil society participation. The study concludes that political discourse can serve as an arena for contesting meaning between state narratives and citizen participation.
