Abstract

Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) is a rare autoimmune condition that can lead to muscle weakness and total paralysis, often occurring following an infection. The hospitalization phase for GBS patients can significantly impact their mental health and recovery process. This study aims to map the literature concerning the subjective experiences of GBS patients during hospitalization, identify the challenges they face, and understand the psychosocial impacts and the support needs required. The methodology employed is a scoping review based on the Arksey and O'Malley framework, with data gathered from three primary databases: PubMed, Scopus, and Medline. Inclusion criteria include studies reporting on subjective experiences during hospitalization, primary studies employing qualitative, quantitative, or mixed-method approaches, and articles published in English within the last ten years (2015-2024). Eight articles met the inclusion criteria, and the analysis showed that GBS patients experience significant physical, psychological, and social challenges, as well as complex interactions with healthcare providers. These findings underscore the importance of clear communication and emotional support during care, while also identifying gaps in the existing research. Recommendations for further research include the development of interventions that are more responsive to the needs of GBS patients, aimed at improving the quality of care and patient experiences during hospitalization. Keywords: Guillain-Barre Syndrome, Experience, Hospital.

Abstract

Success in providing basic life support to cardiac arrest patients is influenced by self-efficacy related to readiness and confidence in giving first aid. Students as prospective health workers are required to be able to provide basic life support in emergencies. Limited training and direct experience in providing basic life support causes students' skills and self-efficacy to be less than optimal. This study aimed to identify the relationship between self-efficacy and the ability of cardiopulmonary resuscitation performed by students. A quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted on 107 diploma III nursing students selected using the proportional stratified random sampling technique. Primary data were collected using the General Self-Efficacy Scale questionnaire and basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation skills observation sheets. Hypothesis testing in the form of Spearman correlation was conducted to identify the general objectives of the study. The results of the study showed a mean value of self-efficacy of 36.06 and a mean value of basic life support skills of 89.00. The results of the Spearman test obtained a p-value of 0.0001 with a relationship strength of 0.813. It is concluded that there is a very strong positive relationship between self-efficacy and basic life support skills, which means that higher self-efficacy in performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation is directly proportional to the higher success of implementing basic life support. Researchers hope that nursing students can improve their self-efficacy related to cardiopulmonary resuscitation through regular knowledge refresher activities and basic life support skills training.

Abstract

Background: Refractory hyperglycemia in diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) presents a critical challenge in geriatric patients due to multifactorial physiological and clinical complexities. Early recognition and integrated management are essential, with critical care nursing as a pivotal component. Purpose: This case report aims to describe and analyze the multifactorial causes of refractory hyperglycemia in a geriatric DKA patient, highlighting the importance of early detection, comprehensive correction, and collaborative nursing roles. Method: A descriptive analytic approach was employed to examine the clinical course of a 75-year-old woman with DKA and persistent hyperglycemia. Data were collected from direct patient observation, systematic physical examinations, laboratory assessments, imaging, and multidisciplinary clinical records. Daily therapeutic interventions and patient responses were meticulously documented. Results: Persistent hyperglycemia resulted from several interacting factors: the impact of glucocorticoids on glycemic control, effects of severe pulmonary infection on insulin resistance, the role of electrolyte disturbances in exacerbating hyperglycemia, the relationship between heart failure and diuretic use, the impact of malnutrition and sarcopenia on insulin resistance, and the need for an integrated therapeutic approach. Each factor contributed to increased insulin resistance and complicated glycemic control. Conclusion: Optimal management of refractory hyperglycemia in elderly DKA patients requires early identification and simultaneous correction of underlying factors, supported by intensive critical care nursing and multidisciplinary collaboration.
