Abstract

Autonomous learning was reported to be very helpful in distance learning because it helped the students to understand the lesson without direct guidance from the teacher and decided to learn with their learning styles which allow them to maximize learning. Yet, students’ well-being is essential to reveal as it can be one of the indicators which can be taken into account on measuring the workload of students enrolling in the vocational state-owned institution. Therefore, this study is eager to reveal the relation between learner autonomy and well-being. The instrument which will be occupied in this study is a survey which derived from the various well-established scales in the literature, and then the back-translation method was used to produce a version in Bahasa Indonesia. All students of the polytechnic will be asked to participate in this study. Further results of this study will be processed with SPSS 25 version and AMOSS supported by additional sources from documents in the polytechnic. This study portrayed a significant relation between learner autonomy and wellbeing in terms of academic performance.

Abstract

Abstract

Attempting to consider an SLA issues on vocabulary acquisition in middle school level, this article aimed to investigate the difference in score on vocabulary test of experimental and control group; and to find the effect size of the narrow reading integrated to West’s GSL intervention on students’ English language acquisition. Forty-five middle school students in two classes were assigned in two groups, with 22 students in the experimental group and 23 students in the control group. In addition to a traditional curriculum for both groups, a five-meeting narrow reading on narrative text, fable, which was integrated to West’s GSL was conducted for the experimental group by encouraging students to read using L1 gloss which was derived from GSL, consulting different meaning in some multi-definition content words and discussing on vocabulary exercise. In contrast, the control group did not engage in any narrow reading program but a general English course. A pretest and posttest of both groups were employed to collect data. The findings of the study showed that the intervention has a large effect size on student’s SLA. The experimental group exhibited significantly better reading comprehension, acquired new vocabulary and word knowledge than the control group. Therefore, applying narrow reading integrated to West’s GSL into EFL class helps improve students’ word knowledge in terms of recognizing word meaning, identifying part of speech and producing a sentence.

Abstract

Students’ well-being among Indonesian scholars might be still unpopular as this topic could lead to a blundered result in a certain area of disciplines. Yet, this topic is essential to reveal as it can be one of the indicators which can be taken into account on measuring the workload of students enrolling in this state-owned institution. Not only that, but this also might be an eminent output indicator for the quality of education specifically on educational outcomes. The instruments occupied in this study were interviews and surveys. Students and alumni of the polytechnic were asked to participate in this study and several key figures as well. This study applied a mixed-method research design, which is commonly accepted as there are both qualitative and quantitative parts combined in the study. The results showed that the quality of student well-being in an emotional, social, and school dimension of student PPIM is relatively at a good level. Hence, with the tight schedule and tough physical activity, the institution should pay attention to a psychological aspect.

Abstract

For employment, industries want recent graduates to have strong technical communication abilities. Therefore, it is important for engineering organizations to have competent technical communicators. As a result, this study looks at how Indonesian polytechnic engineering students assess their own technical communication competency needs in terms of knowledge, abilities, and attitudes toward technical communication in English. A survey on students' perceived needs for technical communication skills received responses from 85 diploma students in various engineering courses at a polytechnic. The study's findings showed that the students' knowledge and abilities about technical communication in English were low intermediate (mean > 3,5 score). In comparison to knowledge and attitudes about technical communication in English, skills in technical communication in English had the lowest mean score. This suggested that the pupils lacked technical English communication abilities. Despite this, the study's findings indicate that students understood the importance of technical communication skills for their future careers. Because need analysis is a continuous process for identifying learning needs, this study has shown that it is worthwhile to review the current needs of the polytechnic engineering students since students' responses could serve as a basis for the improvement of the classroom materials. Finally, this study has recommended that technical communication courses be included to the polytechnic education system since they are crucial for employment in a variety of fields, including engineering.
