Abstract

This article examines the transformation of public communication management in the digital era, focusing on the case of the Maluku Regional Police (Polda Maluku). The study aims to explore both the opportunities and challenges brought about by digital developments in the field of public relations within law enforcement institutions. Using a qualitative approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and document analysis to understand the dynamics of communication practices in the digital context. The findings reveal that digital platforms—such as social media, online news portals, and mobile applications—present valuable opportunities to enhance transparency, foster community engagement, and strengthen public trust. However, several challenges also emerge, including the spread of misinformation, data privacy concerns, and the urgency of timely crisis communication. Organizational factors such as digital readiness, infrastructure availability, leadership orientation, and internal culture further influence the effectiveness of digital communication strategies. The novelty of this study lies in its contextual focus on Polda Maluku, offering a nuanced analysis that connects digital transformation with institutional capability and socio-cultural environments. This article contributes to the development of social and humanities scholarship by providing a critical lens to understand how public institutions navigate the complexities of digital communication. It recommends the advancement of infrastructure, digital literacy, and regulatory frameworks as key steps toward responsive and inclusive public communication in the digital era.

Abstract

This article aims to describe the representation of toxic masculinity in the Indonesian film Vengeance Is Mine, All Others Pay Cash through a semiotic analysis of the main character and selected scenes, employing John Fiske’s three-level coding model: the levels of reality, representation, and ideology. The analysis focuses on visual and narrative elements such as costume, behavior, cinematography, lighting, dialogue, and the actions of the protagonist, Ajo Kawir. The findings reveal that toxic masculinity is portrayed through 1980s-style modest clothing that symbolizes a duality of toughness and vulnerability, acts of violence as dominance over other men, and the refusal to fight women as a sign of patriarchal superiority. At the representation level, cinematographic techniques such as medium shots, close-ups, two-shots, and over-the-shoulder shots emphasize the emotional and violent dimensions of the character. Ideologically, the film articulates values of individualism, male dominance, and superiority, shaped by past trauma and patriarchal social structures. This study demonstrates that film serves not only as entertainment but also as a site for the production and reproduction of problematic gender ideologies. Its novelty lies in the application of Fiske’s semiotic approach to deconstruct toxic masculinity in contemporary Indonesian cinema.

Abstract

The spread of fake news through online social networks poses global challenges, yet its dynamics in local media ecosystems — especially in peripheral regions like Ambon, Indonesia — remain understudied. This study explores the characteristics of fake news circulation in Ambon’s digital environment, its societal impacts, and the limitations of current AI-based detection approaches. Using a mixed-method design, the research analyzes fake news content on local social media platforms, conducts stakeholder interviews, and assesses the applicability of existing detection technologies in a local context. Findings reveal that fake news in Ambon often exploits cultural, religious, and political sensitivities, leading to social fragmentation and declining trust in legitimate media. Moreover, mainstream detection systems are ineffective locally due to linguistic, contextual, and infrastructural barriers. The study highlights the need for context-sensitive, community-driven detection frameworks and contributes new perspectives on misinformation governance in localized digital ecosystems

Abstract

This study examines the dysfunction of intra-familial linguistic transmission as a key factor in the decline of indigenous languages, focusing on the Wayoli ethnic group in Tulehu, Central Maluku. It explores socio-cultural barriers that hinder language preservation, particularly within family communication. Using a qualitative approach, data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Findings reveal that indigenous language use is largely limited to older family members or occurs only between spouses. Children, as the next generation, are not actively involved in using the language, resulting in a discontinuity of transmission. Major obstacles include semantic barriers—children’s inability to understand the language; psychological barriers—parents' fear that using local language may impede their children’s mastery of Indonesian; and socio-institutional barriers—such as the weak role of traditional leaders and the absence of indigenous language education in schools. These dynamics point to a broader pattern of linguistic neglect rooted in structural and cultural shifts. This study contributes to the discourse on language endangerment by highlighting the need to revitalize the roles of family and educational institutions as agents of linguistic sustainability. It recommends collaborative strategies involving families, cultural leaders, and schools to reintegrate local languages into everyday life and the educational curriculum.
