Abstract

The ‘new normal’ era is a method of adapting to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. This takes form in specific social activities, particularly regarding spatial proximity. Such behavior demands a responsive architectural space. Karo architecture - a form of the local wisdom – has been proven its success in dealing with the leprosy pandemic in the 1920s. This research aims to trace the transformation and adaptation of Karo architecture in responding to the past leprosy outbreak whose impacts are viewed in parallel with those inflicted by the Covid-19 pandemic. This is qualitative research deploying an architectural approach derived from behavioral psychology, focusing on territory, behavior, and personal space during Karo’s traditional wedding and death celebration that takes place in Jambur Halilintar Medan. Using Gottfried Semper’s concept of a corridor of architectural elements, the transformative traces of Jambur Karo are then analyzed using the interpretative methods of Paul Ricoeur and the interpretative critique of Wayne O Attoe. Through validation based on the view of Fantasia Lacanian, it is found that the layout without massive partitions, construction, kinship territories, outdoor facilities, and ornamentation in Si Waluh Jabu and Jambur Karo architecture is responsive elements to ‘new normal’ behavior. These are examples of indigenous knowledge of the Nusantara in the area of architecture that is relevant in responding to the Covid-19 pandemic. Keywords: Karo architecture; behavioral; new normal era; personal space; territory AbstrakEra new normal adalah kebiasaan dalam beradaptasi dengan pandemi Covid-19. Abstract

A shift from school-based to online learning at home has caused problems during the covid-19 pandemic. The unpreparedness of homes to accommodate school activities, as well as parents’ limited capacity to act as teachers at home, are among major obstacles to online-home-learning-related practices. This study aims to examine the arrangement of the study space in accordance with the child's learning style. The outcome is to make homes comfortable places to study for families and their children. Taking SDIT Zahira Medan as its case study, this study uses behavioral analysis and qualitative-descriptive approaches to identifying associated problems and presenting them using a place-centered mapping principle. Using Miles and Huberman model and a cross-tabulation of both learning styles and properties of study rooms results in an optimum spatial arrangement and learning media that need to be considered in accordance with attributes proposed by Weisman. The results of the analysis show that visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning styles require specific types and arrangements of study tables and chairs, the character of tools to support learning activities, and indoor and outdoor spaces dedicated to learning. This research is useful for improving children's learning achievement in terms of the pedagogical setting of 'study at home' activities in the new normal era of the covid-19 pandemic. Keywords: behavioral architecture, new normal era, learning style, paedagogic setting AbstrakPergeseran dari pendidikan berbasis sekolah ke pendidikan berbasis online di rumah menimbulkan masalah tersendiri di masa pandemi Covid-19.

Abstract

Abstract

Desa Sibandang, situated along the eastern edge of Lake Toba in North Tapanuli, Indonesia, possesses rich cultural and historical assets, including traditional Batak architecture, ceremonial stone structures, and intangible heritage such as ulos weaving. Despite being designated part of the Lake Toba Super Priority Tourism Destination (DPSP), the village has yet to realize its full potential as a sustainable heritage tourism destination. This study explores strategic revitalization opportunities by identifying internal strengths, weaknesses, and external environmental dynamics through a qualitative descriptive approach. Data were collected via 15 semi-structured interviews, field observations, and analysis of planning and policy documents. The study employed a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) analysis followed by a TOWS matrix to formulate actionable strategies. Findings indicate a favorable internal environment (IFE score: 2.92) and a strong external opportunity landscape (EFE score: 3.02), supporting an aggressive development strategy. Key challenges include inadequate infrastructure, weak tourism governance, and limited community capacity. Strategic directions proposed include digital heritage promotion, infrastructure enhancement, cultural interpretation training, and inclusive local governance mechanisms. This research contributes to heritage tourism planning by offering a replicable framework for integrating cultural preservation with community-based tourism development. It also emphasizes the importance of ethical, participatory planning in safeguarding the cultural integrity of heritage-rich rural villages.
