Abstract

The problem of fertilizers is often a factor inhibiting agricultural development. This is due to, among other things, the relatively high price of fertilizers, limited supply, decreasing type and quality, which makes it difficult for farmers to obtain fertilizers according to their needs. An alternative to anticipating and overcoming fertilizer shortages is that farmers are encouraged to use organic fertilizers or compost. Based on these considerations, outreach activities to farmers and direct training have been carried out in August-October 2020 in Kwala Bingai Village, Stabat District, Langkat Regency, Sumatera Utara Province. The results obtained are that these activities provide many benefits to farmers such as utilizing agricultural waste for making organic fertilizers so that they are not wasted and can overcome fertilizer scarcity and high fertilizer prices by making simple organic fertilizers. and this activity should be done frequently so that agricultural waste can be utilized.

Abstract

The amount of organic waste in the form of cow, poultry, goat manure, and fruit and vegetable waste that is no longer suitable for consumption has the opportunity to be reprocessed into a product that can be reused in Sidomulyo Village. The lack of awareness and knowledge of the farmer group community to process organic waste is one of the factors causing the accumulation of organic waste so that it becomes useless and can pollute the environment. In addition, organic waste processing can also be used as a way to promote zero waste in the village environment. One of the innovations that can be applied and utilized by farmers in processing organic waste and producing organic fertilizer with the best quality is bioconversion by utilizing maggot or larvae from BSF (Black Soilder Fly) flies which are able to decompose organic waste in a fairly short time because maggots are animals. greedy in consuming their feed (organic waste). The purpose of this activity is to assist farmers in processing organic waste. This activity resulted in product innovation in the form of cassava fertilizer which can be reused by farmers as organic fertilizer and can be used as animal feed.

Abstract

Various land use change phenomena have occurred from time to time, especially in Sidomulyo Village, Stabat District. Changes in land use are occurring in line with the increasing population, which has a direct impact on the increasing need for land, especially agricultural land. Sidomulyo Village is located in the urban area of Stabat City, so according to government regulations regarding land use, Sidomulyo Village must be dominated by community settlements, not agricultural land. For this reason, the USU Community Service team offered a solution to continue to be able to carry out agricultural cultivation on limited land, namely the use of the NFT hydroponic system using an easy-to-use portable greenhouse. This cultivation only requires a small amount of land to cultivate horticultural vegetables. The aim of this activity is to develop an NFT system for hydroponic-based horticultural cultivation in Sidomulyo Village so that the community in Sidomulyo Village, Stabat District, becomes an economically and socially independent community and can become a role model for other farmer groups. The next planned stage that must be carried out is monitoring and evaluating the development of horticultural vegetable cultivation through to harvesting and post-harvest handling.
