Abstract

Nigeria as an independent nation cannot discuss her history without recounting her sad experience of one conflict or the other. Notable among these conflicts are those of communal, political and ethno-religious conflicts which often result in destructive violence. Out of all these, ethno-religious conflicts appear to have more implications to national development, security and integration in Nigeria. This paper is an empirical survey of existing literature through secondary investigations. The paper posits that colonialism and its capitalist ideological underpinnings and the transplanting of the same character traits to Nigeria bourgeoisie elements largely accounts for the ethnic divide pervading the Nigerian system. Over and above this argument is the malicious ethnic structures initially created by colonialism which has brought about continuous and contending ethnic strife in the Nigerian state to date. The position of this paper is also that the new trend of criminality and the gory tradition of terrorism and security lapses ravaging the country in most states of the North during the Jonathan’s administration and most states of the North-Central during the Buhari’s administration is akin to ethnic and sectional sentiments as well as ethnic bias. In view of this, the paper therefore attempts to draw explanations on why ethno-religious conflicts have become a permanent feature of Nigeria and its implications to national integration. This paper further takes a peep into the effects of ethno-religious conflicts on economic development in Nigeria. The paper sums up with policy recommendations and conclusion for peaceful co-existence in the 21st century.

Organisations face the challenge of establishing ways to mitigate the negative effects of work during coronavirus or Covid-19 pandemic. As a result work-family balance was disrupted and negatively affected the employees’ well-being especially working women. Against this backdrop, this study examined work-family balance of women working from home during covid-19 pandemic. Cross sectional research design was employed and data were collected via a survey of 126 from medical, education, banking, and finance and service sectors in Nigeria. The 126 women were selected using simple random sampling technique and data collected was analysed using simple percentage. The study revealed that women were satisfied by working remotely during the Covid-19 pandemic. The study recommends among others that organisations and government should develop and implement work-family balance policies that would promote the increasing use of remote working arrangement with special reference to working women.

Abstract

Governments and organizations, particularly those in developing nations, have experienced project failures during the implementation of their projects, though there may be some variations among governments in the causes, effects, and consequences of such failures. The purpose of this study was to look into the reasons behind project failures in developing nations, specifically looking at Nigeria. As a result, the implementation of infrastructure projects in Nigeria has encountered problems and failed. The investigation is a documentary study. It obtains its data from secondary sources, such as books, journals, government-issued documents, newspapers, magazines, and websites that host related data. The collected data were examined using a content analysis technique. It became clear that project failure occurs frequently in developing nations, particularly Nigeria, and that there are a variety of causes, effects, and consequences. Poor financial capability, inaccurate costing, corruption, incompetence and a lack of knowledge, poor planning and estimation, poor contracting and contractor practices, poor communication, frequent design scope changes and errors, poor leadership, interference from socio-cultural and political factors, and poor knowledge were some of the causes identified. The effects of project failure were found to include lost of state revenue, citizen revenue losses, project cost overruns, low community empowerment and poor infrastructure. Slow economic growth, sector-focused underdevelopment, a loss of foreign aid and grants, stricter donor regulations, the loss of elections to the incumbent leadership, and a lack of trust from financial institutions in the government were the results. This study suggests, among other things, that pertinent government agencies, such as the National Council on Public Procurement, Bureau of Public Procurement, and Due Process Office, which are in charge of overseeing and monitoring federal government projects nationwide, be cleaned up and redesigned to best carry out their duties without using unethical methods.

Abstract

This paper looks at the contributions worker unions have made to ensuring prompt promotions for workers, the regular delivery of training programs for workers, and the extent to which effective labour unionism has ensured the prompt payment of pensions and gratuities to retirees in Nigeria. The study's theoretical framework was the pluralism theory by Flanders and Fox (1970). Secondary sources were used to collect the data. On the produced materials, contextual analyses were conducted. The results of the study showed that due to the difficult political environment in the nation, Nigeria has not had effective unionism over the years. Because of this, it is uncommon for employer support employee welfare programs like job security, prompt promotion with commensurate financial benefits, regular training programs, and pension and gratuity benefits to be provided. All of these have caused employees across Nigerian government institutions to experience hunger, poverty, and a lack of motivation to carry out their assigned duties. The researcher suggested that labour unions in Nigeria, among other things, should persuade government institutions to ensure adequate provision of workers welfare in order to improve the socioeconomic wellbeing of the workers and toward higher performance in the organizations; unions should seek redress in industrial court with regards to any infringement on the rights of any worker in Nigeria as this has produced results in the past.

Abstract

Despite the benefits of work-life balance and the large number for studies it has motivated in developed nations, relatively little studies have been done on how it affects organisational commitment in Nigeria. This is because Nigerian businesses are known for endorsing unstable working environments and unethical workplace standards at the expense of the wider public. In light of this, this study examined the connections between organisational commitment and work-life balance in the Tin Can Island Port terminals in Lagos State. Purposive sampling was used in conjunction with the cross-sectional approach. The work enrichment theory served as the study's theoretical framework, and a questionnaire with 389 respondents was used as the research instrument. Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) Version 23 was used to analyse the data using percentages, mean, standard deviation, Pearson's coefficient of correlation, and both linear and multiple regression analysis. The study's conclusions demonstrated how employees' affective, continuance, and normative commitments were impacted by work-life balance in Tin Can Island Port, Lagos State. The study came to the conclusion that employees' commitment to their organisation as well as their personal lives, are impacted by an inadequate work-life balance. Based on the study's findings and conclusion, the management of Tin Can Island Port should, among other things, develop and successfully apply flexible work schedules to help staff members manage and lessen the conflicts they encounter in their personal lives.

Abstract

In addition to being a crucial part of strategic human resource management, career support also serves as a tool for achieving organizational objectives. This study evaluates the impact of career support on workers' ability to perform. Most businesses in Nigeria are currently dealing with issues related to employee performance; this illustrates a significant challenge in the country's business environment. A qualitative research design was used for this study. To investigate the impact of career support on employees' performance, exploratory research based solely on findings from the analysis of the existing literature of various studies, periodicals, reports, and books relevant to the topic of study was employed. According to the findings of this study, career support is a crucial management tool that could be used in Nigeria to raise and improve employee performance. This implies that organizations in Nigeria may decline employee performance if career support issues are not taken seriously. The study concludes that an organization's career support initiatives directly impact how well its employees perform. The ability of employees to perform well is significantly positively correlated with career support. The study suggests, among other things, that organizations continue to treat career support very seriously to boost workers' productivity.

Abstract

The formulation, adoption and implementation of appropriate trade-oriented economic policies have become imperative as an indispensable tool for stimulating and regulating trade development process. A more favorable trade negotiation position combined with sound political, macroeconomic and infrastructural policy frameworks is the best route to stimulating trade performance and reaps the benefits of fuller participation in the global trading system. In light of this, this paper examines potential future areas of stronger collaboration between Nigeria and Türkiye and presents specific policy recommendations. In particular, the paper contributes to economic policy-making efforts in terms of current dynamics and future prospects of increased bilateral relations. Also, Türkiyes policy and specific initiatives toward the African continent was discussed. The new atmosphere of the 100th anniversary of the republic of Türkiye notwithstanding the controversy about its orientation, including those toward Africa connected with the goal of establishing hegemony, economic and political investments in Nigeria would bring about a new momentum to bilateral relations. In conclusion, in their search for alternative export markets, Turkish exporters now consider that Nigeria has great potential for meeting their economic interests. This paper therefore is a wakeup call that will advance the economic and political co-operation between Türkiye and Nigeria going forward.

Abstract

This study examined the role of public administration in combating corruption in Nigeria, emphasizing the contributions of anti-corruption agencies. Adopting a historical study approach, the study traced the development and influence of key agencies, including the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC). The Institutional Theory was used to analyze the relationship between administrative frameworks and anti-corruption efforts. The study provides unique insights into the effectiveness of anti-corruption agencies, highlighting their achievements and the constraints they face, including limited resources and political challenges. The findings indicated that although these agencies have achieved significant progress, they face challenges such as political interference, insufficient institutional capacity, and poor coordination, which limit their effectiveness. The study concluded that public administration is essential in this fight, but more extensive reforms are necessary to enhance the strength and independence of these agencies. The study recommended the creation of an independent body to oversee the performance of anti-corruption agencies and ensure improved accountability in their operations. The study's practical contribution is found in its policy suggestions for enhancing anti-corruption frameworks. In contrast, its theoretical contribution adds depth to the discussion on institutional integrity and governance in societies prone to corruption.
