Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe the perceptions and expectations of German language students, especially in terms of receptive skills. This study asks two main questions: i) what are the expectations of students towards learning German and ii) how are students' perceptions of German learning, especially reading and listening, the data sources for this research are students of the German Language Education Study Program. The research instruments were questionnaires and in-depth interviews. The data were analyzed descriptively, which showed that i) In general (98%) students have high expectations to study and work in Germany, for example, following the "Ausbildung," ii) 98% of students realize that reading and listening are ways to broaden horizons, enrich vocabulary, and avoid misunderstandings in both one-way and two-way communication; and iii) Students' cognitive perceptions of reading and listening skills contribute to their positive attitudes towards improving these receptive skills; this finding shows that positive perceptions and high expectations of students are inversely proportional to their receptive abilities.

Abstract

According to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the unemployment rate in Indonesia in 2020 is still high at 9.77 million people or around 6.26% of the total productive age or labor force. When it was viewed from the level of education, it turned out that vocational high school graduates occupied the top position as a contributor to the unemployment rate in Indonesia, it was 13.55%. This high number of unemployed because the competence possessed by Indonesian human resources was still low or because there were not enough job opportunities to accommodate all graduates of the workforce. To overcome this, the government through the Ministry of Education and Culture, the Directorate of Vocational High School Education (SMK) was trying to find solutions to overcome these problems. This paper discussed a literature review about the teaching factory program in Vocational High Schools as one of the programs suggested by the government to be implemented in Vocational High Schools. Teaching factory was a learning activity where students directly carried out production activities in the form of goods and services in the school education environment, with the aim of training work competencies and having competencies for entrepreneurship. With the implementation of this program, it was expected that Vocational High School graduates were able to create jobs and at the same time opened up job opportunities for others and thus the unemployment rate in Indonesia could be suppressed

Abstract

The German Language MGMP (Musyawarah Guru Mata Pelajaran) empowerment program in Central Maluku has a clear goal in the development of literacy AKM (Minimum Competency Assessment) instruments. The program begins with an introduction to what an AKM instrument is and its importance in measuring literacy skills in German. Participants were introduced to the framework and methods of AKM instrument development. This community service program aims to: (1) improve the skills of German language teachers in Central Maluku in developing literacy AKM instruments; (2) increase collaboration among teachers and build networks and cooperation to create active and connected German language teachers, and allied teachers, so that they can share experiences, resources, and best practices. The methods used are: (a) initial observation; (b) plan development; (c) online and offline face-to-face approach with teachers; (d) training; (e) evaluation. This activity is carried out face-to-face directly (offline) and indirectly (online). The results achieved from the Central Maluku German Language MGMP empowerment activities in developing literacy AKM instruments show that these efforts have succeeded in improving teacher competence in designing and implementing assessment instruments. The training and workshops not only strengthened teachers' understanding of AKM, but also enriched German teaching methods, encouraged collaboration between teachers and cognate teachers and resulted in the exchange of ideas and best practices in learning.

Abstract

This Community Service (PkM) activity aims to transfer knowledge related to essential soft skills required in the profession of Kundenberater (customer consultant) to students of the German Language Education Study Program. The initiative is driven by the growing need to equip students not only with academic knowledge but also with non-technical competencies that support their readiness for the workforce, particularly in intercultural communication and customer service. The methods applied include interactive dialogue, group discussions, and Q&A sessions, which encourage active participation and critical reflection among the participants. Through this approach, students gain not only theoretical insights but also the ability to connect this knowledge to real-life situations they may encounter in the field. The outcomes of the activity show an increased understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a Kundenberater, along with the communication skills required in such a role. Moreover, the activity enhances students’ confidence in engaging in professional interactions. The conclusion of this program emphasizes that knowledge transfer through dialogue and discussion is effective in fostering awareness and foundational soft skills relevant to the job market, particularly within the context of German language education.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the implementation of the Handlungsorientierung approach in German language teaching at the senior high school level. The research employed a qualitative descriptive method using questionnaires distributed to German language teachers in various high schools. The findings indicate that although most teachers are not academically familiar with the theory of Handlungsorientierung, they have implemented its principles through learning activities such as role-playing, product creation (videos, emails, posters), and other collaborative tasks. Teachers consider this approach effective, enjoyable, and capable of increasing student engagement. However, its implementation is challenged by limited instructional time and insufficient facilities. Based on these findings, it is recommended that teacher training be enhanced and supporting infrastructure be improved to enable the more optimal application of this approach.

Abstract

This research aimed to determine the effect of animation media on increasing the mastery of German vocabulary among students at SMA Negeri 1 Seram Barat. The study employed a quantitative methodology, utilising a quasi-experimental design that included an experimental group and a control group. The research sample consisted of the control group, class XI.5, and the experimental group, class XI.1. There were thirty students enrolled in each class. The data collection technique used pre- and post-tests with a question sheet consisting of 20 questions as a collection instrument. The experimental class used animation media for learning, while the control class used static pictures. Data analysis procedures were conducted using SPSS to perform normality tests, homogeneity tests, and hypothesis tests employing parametric statistical methods, namely the independent samples t-test and effect size test. The study's findings revealed a difference in the average mastery of German vocabulary scores between the group that used animation media and the group that relied on conventional whiteboard media. The data collection approach employed pre- and post-tests utilising 20-item question sheets as instruments for gathering data. The analysis indicated that the experimental class using animation media surpassed the control class in average mastery of German vocabulary scores, achieving mean scores of 16.23 and 14.53, respectively. The significant value (Sig.) in Levene's test of variance is 0.268, which is greater than 0.05. This result indicates that the variance of the data between the experimental and control groups is equal or homogeneous. The interpretation of the output table of the independent samples t-test is based on the assumption of equal variances, which is indicated by the Sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.001, which is less than 0.05. It can be concluded that the null hypothesis (H₀) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Hₐ) is accepted. This indicates that there is a significant difference in the average level of mastery of German vocabulary among the students in the experimental class, who used animation media, and those in the control class, who used static picture media. The effect size calculated using Cohen's d yielded a significant value of 0.922929, indicating a large effect size classification. The deployment of animation media has been demonstrated to be an effective pedagogical instrument, enabling a significant advancement in students' proficiency in the German vocabulary at SMA Negeri 1 Seram Barat.

Abstract

Understanding other cultures is essential, not only for those working in the tourism and hospitality sectors but also for anyone who interacts with people from different cultural backgrounds. People often have different perceptions of other cultures, which may lead to negative judgments. These differences in thinking highlight the need for mutual understanding, both internally and externally. Therefore, this study aims to examine intercultural aspects between Germany and Indonesia, focusing on nonverbal communication—particularly gestures and facial expressions. This research seeks to identify the similarities and differences in gestures and facial expressions between German and Indonesian cultures. Nonverbal communication refers to communication conveyed indirectly through body language or signals. It plays an important role in interaction, encompassing body movements and facial expressions. Both German and Indonesian cultures possess a wide variety of gestures and facial expressions with diverse meanings and purposes. Data were collected by observing videos and reviewing references that document various types of gestures and facial expressions. The findings reveal that there are both similarities and differences in nonverbal expressions between German and Indonesian cultures. Based on these findings, it is important to understand and recognize each culture’s nonverbal communication patterns to avoid misunderstandings regarding gestures and facial expressions or their meanings across cultures.
