Abstract

Gadgets with Video Display Terminals (VDT) are being used daily by students all over the world. One of the effects that may arise from VDT gadgets usage for a long duration of time is Dry Eye Syndrome (DES). Dry Eye Syndrome itself can cause discomfort and may hinder productivity. OSDI is one of the few diagnosis methods for DES which uses several sets of questions in the form of questionnaire (discomfort symptoms, visual acuity, and environmental factors). The purpose of this study is to observe DES prevalence and VDT gadgets usage behaviour among students of Udayana University, Faculty of Medicine. This study is a cross-sectional descriptive study. Research data is obtained from OSDI questionnaire that was made using online form and filled through the period of July to September 2020. The data was then processed using computer software. Sample amount that is being included in this study is 228 people. The prevalence of DES among Udayana University Faculty of Medicine students is 62,3% (142 people). DES prevalence by gender is 61,6% in male students and 62,7% in female students. Usage behaviour of VDT gadgets varies by duration per day; below two hours of usage (2 sample), two to four hours of usage (21 sample), four to six hours of usage (93 sample), and above six hours of usage (112 sample) with above six hours having the average of 9,9±2,4 hours. The most common gadget that is being used among the sample is smartphone (70,6%), and the main purpose of gadget usage is for doing study assignments (36,8%). The results of this study are useful for increasing information about prevalence data of DES among students. Further research is needed to conclude a more in-depth relationship between VDT gadgets usage and DES occurrence. Keywords: Dry Eye Synrome, Video Display Terminal, OSDI.

Abstract

ABSTRAK Lensa kontak disebut sebagai metode aman dan umum digunakan untuk memperbaiki kelainan refraksi miopia, hiperopia, astigmatisme, dan presbiopia. Lensa kontak mengurangi sensitivitas permukaan mata sehingga produksi refleks film air mata berkurang. Abstract

Ocular manifestation in HIV refers to a wide range of eye problems. The likelihood of experiencing at least one visual symptom increases with age in HIV patients. The possible explanation is that older people may be more susceptible to other health problems that can exacerbate ocular manifestations. People who have had HIV for a longer period also may experience decline in the immune function, and accumulation of chronic inflammation and damage over time therefore increasing their risk of complications. Examining the possible clinical correlation between age and ocular manifestation in HIV patients was the primary objective of the research. 159 HIV-positive Patients at Prof. IGNG. Ngoerah Central General Hospital Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT) Clinic in Denpasar, Bali were examined for ocular-related complaints between June 2020 and April 2023 as part of this hospital-based analytic retrospective study. The research found no statistically significant correlation between age and the occurrence of ocular symptoms (p = 0.276). However, the percentage of HIV patients that have ocular manifestations increase along with older age group. Age and ocular manifestation did not correlate significantly in the HIV patient population. To further understand the relationship between age, length of HIV infection, and the onset of ocular symptoms, further research is required.

Abstract

Introduction & ObjectivesGlaucoma is one of the leading causes of irreversible global blindness and the second most commoncause of blindness in the world after cataracts. Depression and anxiety often occur in glaucomapatients when glaucoma is first diagnosed, the effect of decreased vision function in glaucoma, sideeffects of glaucoma therapy both medically and surgically and financial effects due to length oftreatment and loss of job due to limited vision. This study aims to determine the relationship of thedegree of optic nerve damage to the level of depression and anxiety in patients with primaryglaucoma. MethodsThis research is an analytic, prospective observational research with a cross-sectional studyapproach. The relationship between independent variables and dependent variables was analyzed. ResultsThe Man Whitney test found a significant difference in anxiety scores between the severe and mildto moderate groups with a p value of 0.020 . The ANCOVA test found that there was a relationshipbetween the degree of optic nerve damage in primary glaucoma and the level of anxiety aftercontrolling for control variables. ConclusionThis study can be concluded that there is a difference in the level of anxiety between the degree ofsevere and mild to moderate optic nerve damage. The level of anxiety itself corresponds to thedegree of damage to the optic nerve. The more severe the damage to the optic nerve, increased ofthe patient's anxiety score.
