Abstract

The global pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries continue to grow, driven by innovations that emphasize product quality and effectiveness. However, the halal status of raw materials has become a critical concern, especially with the increasing number of Muslim consumers worldwide. Conventional ingredients such as gelatin, collagen, and keratin are often derived from pigs or animals not slaughtered according to Islamic law, raising religious, ethical, health, and sustainability issues. This study systematically reviews halal alternative raw materials for pharmaceutical and cosmetic applications. Literature searches were conducted through databases such as Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, and DOAJ, focusing on articles published between 2018 and 2025 that met specific inclusion and exclusion criteria. The review identifies four main categories of halal alternatives: halal animal-based sources, including fish skin, bones, and marine animals; plant-based sources, such as agar, carrageenan, pectin, starch–alginate, and natural colorants; microbial sources, including xanthan gum and non-animal-derived chitosan; and synthetic/recombinant sources, such as recombinant collagen, recombinant insulin, and synthetic polymers. These materials serve diverse functions in pharmaceutical and cosmetic formulations, including capsule coatings, tablet coatings, emulsifiers, stabilizers, colorants, and drug delivery systems. Each alternative presents unique advantages and challenges in terms of formulation stability, bioactivity, production cost, and consumer acceptance. In conclusion, halal alternative raw materials have strong potential to replace conventional non-halal ingredients and support the global trends of clean beauty, sustainability, and ethical consumerism; however, further research is required to optimize technology and strengthen regulatory frameworks   Keywords: Alternative Gelatin, Halal Cosmetic, Halal Ingredients, Halal Pharmaceutical, Sustainable Logistics

Abstract

Syzygium cumini leaves contain flavonoids and other phytochemicals with promising pharmaceutical potential; however, the direct use of the extract is limited by poor stability and low bioavailability. This study aimed to formulate and characterize alginate–kappa-carrageenan microspheres containing the ethanol extract of S. cumini leaves prepared by ionic gelation using CaCl₂ as a crosslinking agent. The extract was obtained by maceration with 96% ethanol, yielding 19.6%. Phytochemical screening confirmed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, and polyphenols. Three formulations containing 0.2%, 0.3%, and 0.4% extract were prepared and evaluated for organoleptic properties, microsphere yield, morphology, particle size, moisture content, and entrapment efficiency (EE). All formulations produced fine light-green powders with a characteristic herbal odor. Microsphere yield ranged from 92.45 ± 0.52% to 93.96 ± 0.52% and differed significantly among formulations (p 0.05). Particle size ranged from 3.16 ± 0.25 to 3.30 ± 0.00 µm, with polydispersity index values of 0.55–0.58, indicating moderately polydisperse systems. Moisture content remained low, ranging from 3.43 ± 0.86% to 3.81 ± 0.45%. EE increased with extract concentration, and F3 showed the highest value (69.91 ± 1.18%), which differed significantly from the other formulations (p 0.05). These findings indicate that alginate–kappa-carrageenan microspheres are a promising carrier system for S. cumini leaf extract and may improve flavonoid protection. Further studies on release behavior and storage stability are needed to confirm their performance.

Abstract

Kombucha is a fermented tea beverage produced by a symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast (SCOBY) and is increasingly consumed as a functional beverage. However, concerns regarding its safety and halal status remain, particularly due to ethanol formation during fermentation. This review aimed to evaluate the safety aspects and halal compliance of Kombucha by analyzing fermentation conditions, microbial activity, alcohol production, and halal critical control points. A literature review approach was employed using scientific articles, conference proceedings, fatwas, and official regulatory documents retrieved from PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar. The findings revealed that fermentation temperature, pH, duration, substrate composition, and microbial diversity significantly affected kombucha quality, particularly ethanol concentration and microbiological safety. Kombucha was generally considered safe for healthy individuals when produced under hygienic, controlled conditions. In contrast, uncontrolled fermentation increased the risk of excessive alcohol formation and microbial contamination. From a halal perspective, Kombucha may be considered permissible when ethanol content remains below 0.5%, and all ingredients and processing stages comply with halal requirements. Therefore, standardized fermentation control and halal assurance practices are essential to ensure product safety and halal compliance.

Abstract

Abstract

The Panimbang River in Pandeglang, Indonesia, is widely used by residents for daily activities. This study analyzed water quality using physical parameters, including pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), TSS (Total Suspended Solids), salinity, and alkalinity. Samples were taken around the estuary, which is surrounded by settlements. The results showed a pH of 4.50–6.49, below the standard of 6–9, indicating slightly acidic water. High temperatures, thought to be due to daytime sampling, affect DO. The average DO value was only 2.96 mg/L, well below the minimum threshold of 5 mg/L, indicating poor aeration. The average TDS is above 1000 ppm, indicating pollution from household waste and human activities. The average alkalinity of 384.976 mg/L CaCO₃ is within the safe range (30–500 mg/L), so it can stabilize pH. The water quality in the Panimbang River Estuary indicates environmental pressure from anthropogenic activities, resulting in slightly acidic water with low aeration and high solute content. However, adequate alkalinity still helps maintain the water's pH stability. This condition indicates the need for more intensive monitoring and waste management to protect estuarine ecosystems, which are vital to the community and the surrounding environment.
