Abstract

Kalimat interogatif bertujuan untuk mengharapkan adanya jawaban secara verbal. Penerapan interogatif dalam bahasa Jawa (BJ) bersifat umum, namun struktur sintaksisnya berbeda dengan bahasa lain. Konsep yang ditekankan dalam BJ adalah perubahan peran dan adanya komplemen dalam bentuk strukturalnya. Artikel ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan dan menyusun struktur kalimat tanya dengan teori X-Bar. Data yang digunakan berupa tuturan interogatif tokoh dalam film pendek berjudul “Tilik” karya Wahyu Agung Prasetyo. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan teknik observasi dan catat. Data diidentifikasi dan diklasifikasikan ke dalam jenis kalimat interogatif dan dianalisis dengan menerapkan teori X-Bar. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan (1) pertanyaan ya-tidak dan pertanyaan penyugguhan memiliki karakter total dengan pola FI absolut. Hal ini disebabkan karena jenis pertanyaan ya-tidak dan pertanyaan aktual memiliki kesamaan yaitu meminta pembenaran dari mitra tutur. (2) Jenis interogatif meminta jawaban suatu unsur, menanyakan alasan, dan meminta pendapat tersebar sebagian dengan pola pendistribusian pada FPm dan FI. Secara mutlak interogatif meminta pendapat berada pada pola FPm dengan ciri FPm Spesifier FP berada di awal kalimat. Ketiga jenis pertanyaan tersebut memiliki karakter parsial disebabkan karena penutur hanya menekankan pada bagian yang penting namun dapat mewakili keseluruhan pertanyaan. Berdasarkan hasil temuan tersebut, dapat disimpulkan bahwa penggunaan interogatif dalam film “Tilik” terdiri dari bentuk parsial dan total yang terdistribusikan dengan pola X-Bar FPm+Spes+I+Komp dan I+Spes+Komp.

Abstract

In this study, the researcher focuses on the analysis of the strategies in expressing gratitude performed by English Department students in 5th and 7th semester of different genders. The objectives of this study are (1) identifying the contexts, types, and functions that influence gratitude expression uttered by the 5th and 7th semester of English Department students based on gender differences, (2) analyzing and discovering the language pattern in gratitude expression used by the 5th and 7th semesters of English Department students based on gender differences. The researcher uses a descriptive-qualitative method and employed Spradley’s analysis method in collecting and analyzing the data which includes domain, taxonomic, componential and cultural theme analysis. The source of data is in the form of participants; the students of 5th and 7th semester in English Department whereas the data were taken from responses in the form of utterances in DCT answered by the participants. Throughout the taxonomic analysis, the data were classified using Cheng’s taxonomy (2005) of gratitude strategies. The findings show that (1) each of the different situational contexts hooked the respondents to employ different gratitude expression whether it is male or female students, (2) both male students in the 5th   and 7th   semesters have a similar pattern to each other in expressing gratitude as well as female students in the 5th and 7th semester. The researcher also found similarities and dissimilarities in gratitude expression patterns used by male students and female students.

Abstract

TOEFL ITP merupakan salah satu tes Bahasa Inggris terstandarisasi untuk menguji kecakapan Bahasa Inggris. Banyak institusi pendidikan menggunakan TOEFL ITP sebagai syarat kelulusan untuk program S1 dan S2. Selain itu, banyak lembaga pemberi beasiswa (salah satunya adalah LPDP), perusahaan multinasional, serta lembaga pemerintahan, mensyaratkan TOEFL ITP sebagai salah satu kriteria seleksi untuk mengukur kecakapan bahasa Inggris pelamar. Dilihat dari pentingnya tes ini, Program Studi Sastra Inggris UNY melakukan Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat (PkM) yang bertujuan untuk mengenalkan dan memberikan pelatihan singkat TOEFL ITP kepada siswa SMP dan SMA SahabatQu Islamic Fullday School (SIFS), Sleman, DIY. PkM ini juga diharapkan mampu meningkatkan kesadaran siswa terhadap pentingnya bahasa Inggris dalam dunia akademik dan profesional serta membantu siswa dalam persiapan studi lanjut. Pada tahap persiapan, tim PKM melakukan analisis kebutuhan dan survei lapangan di sekolah SMP dan SMA SIFS. Pada tahap pengembangan, tim PKM membuat materi pelatihan TOEFL ITP serta soal yang pada tahap pelaksanaan diujikan kepada peserta pelatihan. Evaluasi akhir dilakukan melalui penyebaran angket. Hasil evaluasi menunjukkan bahwa 58% peserta setuju pelatihan ini meningkatkan keterampilan mereka dalam mengerjakan TOEFL ITP dengan baik. Persentase yang sama juga menyatakan bahwa materi yang diberikan jelas dan mudah dipahami. 52% peserta menyatakan sangat setuju untuk pelatihan lanjutan ke depannya. Evaluasi tersebut menunjukkan bahwa pelatihan ini dinilai sangat bermanfaat dalam memberikan pemahaman terhadap tes TOEFL ITP, dan peserta berharap untuk ada pelatihan berkelanjutan lainnya. Program ini secara keseluruhan berhasil meningkatkan kesadaran siswa terhadap pentingnya belajar bahasa Inggris, dan meningkatkan pemahaman siswa terhadap format dan strategi pengerjaan TOEFL ITP.

Abstract

English reading comprehension remains a challenge for many Indonesian students learning English as a foreign language. This study investigates the use of story retelling as a pedagogical strategy to improve students’ reading comprehension. Conducted in 2021, the study employed a descriptive quantitative approach with a one-group pre-test and post-test design involving nine Grade XII students from an Islamic private senior high school in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, who followed the 2013 national curriculum. The students read two Aesop’s fables, The Boy Who Cried Wolf and The Fox and the Grapes, and retold the stories through written and recorded oral tasks as part of emergency remote teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic. Students’ performances were assessed by three teachers using a scoring rubric covering relevancy, accuracy, fluency, and creativity, with relevancy and accuracy treated as the primary indicators of reading comprehension. Data were analyzed through descriptive comparison of mean pre-test and post-test scores. The results indicate an overall improvement in students’ reading comprehension, particularly in terms of relevancy and accuracy in the post-test. These findings suggest that story retelling can serve as an effective instructional strategy to support reading comprehension in English, especially when integrated with written and oral activities. This study highlights the potential of children’s literature, such as Aesop’s fables, to facilitate comprehension among Indonesian senior high school students

Abstract

In today's digital era, speech acts are not only realized through face-to-face communication but also manifested in online interaction. One of the prominent platforms where online interaction occurs is Instagram. Nowadays, Instagram functions not only as a medium for sharing personal moments but also as a powerful business tool for promotion. This study examines (1) the types of speech acts employed in the @voilajogja culinary Instagram account and (2) how these acts manifest marketing strategies in food discourse. The study applies Searle's (1979) speech act theory and Kotler and Keller's (2021) marketing management framework within a mixed-method design. The analysis focuses on captions posted during the Ramadan period (March 1–31, 2025). The findings reveal that representative speech acts are the most salient (94.3%), functioning to inform users about restaurant locations, operating hours, and recommended menu items. Commissive acts (42.9%) appear in the form of promotional promises such as buy 5 get 1 free, 50% discounts for children under 12 years old. Directive acts (25.7%) encourage followers to make reservations or order specific dishes. Expressive acts (28.6%) convey positive evaluations and admiration for the food and ambiance. Notably, declarative acts are absent aligning with Instagram's informal and promotional nature. Drawing on Kotler and Keller's (2021) marketing communication framework, these linguistic patterns represent the integration of informative, persuasive, and emotional strategies to attract and engage consumers. Overall, the findings suggest that food promotion on Instagram functions not only as a digital marketing practice but also as a site of pragmatic interaction where marketing strategies are linguistically realized.
