Abstract

Leafminers and potency of their parasitoids at vegetable crops in Palu Valley, Central Sulawesi. Leafminer is an exotic pest and becomes a new important pest species of onion and other vegetable crops in Central Sulawesi. The study aimed to survey the leafminer species and its infestation level at several vegetable crops as well as the potency of their parasitoids as biocontrol agents. Therefore, several crops (onions, tomato, cabbage, string bean, lemon basil, amaranth) were observed toidentify the leafminer species and their associated parasitoids. Several leaves of all crops infested by leafminers were collected for rearing the leafminers and their parasitoids in laboratory. The study recorded three species of leafminers:Liriomyza chinensis, L. sativae, and L. huidobrensis and five species of parasitoids: Hemiptarsenus varicornis, Chrysocharis pentheus, Sympiesis sp., Gronotoma micromorpha, and Opius sp. While Liriomyza chinensis was only recorded from onion crops (monophagus), other species were poliphagus. An average infestation level among leafminer species varied, i.e. 21% -51% while parasitism ranged were 13%-40 %. The most abundant parasitoid recorded from all observed crops was H. varicornis. The results suggest that parasitoids, mainly H. varicornis have a high potential to control leafminers in the vegetable crops in Palu Valley.

Abstract

Leafminer (Liriomyza sp.) is an exotic pest that currently has become a new major pest at the onion crops in Palu Valley-Central Sulawesi and it may reduce the yields up to 100%. The study was aimed to investigate the infestation level of leafminer on three local varieties of onion in Palu and to identify the leafminer species infested the onion crops. The experiment was arranged in a completely randomized design with three treatments of local onion varieties (Palu, Palasa, and Tinombo) and six replicates. The onion seeds were grown in plot of 6 x 4 m and five plants were randomely chosen as the samples to observe the percentage of pest infested and the yields. The imago of leafminer from each onion variety were collected and brought to the laboratory for identification. The results showed that the averages of infestation intensity of leafminer were 48.1 % (Palu), 47.6 % (Palasa), and 65.9 % (Tinombo) while the dry weight of bulb per 5 plant samples were 133.3 g (Palu), 120 g (Palasa), 0 g (Tinombo). The results indicated that Palu and Palasa varieties be more resistance to leafminer. The leafminer attacking onion crops in Palu is Liriomyza chinensis as indicated by some morphological characters observed.

Abstract

An increasing studies related with the detrimental effects of agrochemicals suggested the advantage of biofertilizers and biopesticides uses to support the sustainable farming system. This study aimed to evaluate the response of shallot ‘Lembah Palu’ with the application of arbuscular mycorrhizae (AM) and Beauveria bassiana (Bb) under organic farming system. A split-plot experiment was designed to combine Bb at two intervals (every 5 and 10 days) and AM with three rates (0; 5; and 10 g per plant). Leafminer population and infestation, root colonization, root biomass, and shallot yield were observed. Application of the AM and Bb affected shallot production and leafminer infestation, independently. Mycorrhizae application increased the root biomass and yield of shallot but gave negligible effects on population and leafminer attack. The shallot production with no mycorrhizae was significantly lower compared to both mycorrhizae application rates of 5 g and 10 g. The application of B. bassiana every 5 days was more effective in suppressing the population and infestation of leafminers compared to that every 10 day-treatment. The study points out the positive contribution of the mycorrhizae and B. bassiana in the shallot cultivation and supports the implementation of the organic farming system.

Abstract

Global warming that caused by increasing of C02 in atmosphere effects many aspect on organism lives, including insects-plants interactions. The effect of CO2 increased will more complex when interact with another environment factors such as Nitrogen increased and atmosphere temperature increased. Global warming effects on physiology, phenology, distribution, adaptation, and interaction among species. Increasing of C02 gases in atmosphere potentially to rise attack of herbivory insects and effects on their natural enemy. Eventhough, the effect is very species spesific  and specific system on insects-plants interactions. It is needed  holistic understanding to build the strategy for herbivory insects controlled. In the other side, C02 increasing is a ecological issue that caused and effects to human life. It is need proactive attitude and communication to handle this problem together.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the effect of forest conversion to agriculture, especially cocoa plantation on spider diversity in Central Sulawesi. The experiment was conducted in the vicinity of the village of Bobo Palolo Subdistrict, Donggala in the margins of Lore Lindu National Park in Central Sulawesi. Spiders were collected on transects size of 50 mx 10 m at each study site using insect nets. The results showed that there are at least 17 species from 11 families of spiders recorded from natural forest, disturb forest, and cacao plantation. Changes in habitat type affect the diversity of spiders. Spider species diversity tends to decline due to habitat change from natural forest to cocoa plantations. However the forest with intermediate level of disturbance as well as a cacao plantation that maintains many types of shade trees has capability for supporting spiders diversity. Community structure of spiders at the cacao plantation are relatively similar to those in natural forests.

Abstract

The research aimed to identify (1) the attractiveness of leaf extract of Ocimum sp. and M. bracteataon fruit flies in chili plantation and (2) species of fruit flies collected from the plantation. The studywas conducted from March to April 2009 using a Completely Randomized Block design with 3treatments of traps and 4 replications. The results showed that leaf extract of Occimum sp. and M.bracteata were effective attractants for trapping and controlling fruit flies at the chili plantation. The number of fruit flies trapped on both attractant was significantly higher compare with thattrapped on control (without attractant) but M.bractetata extract showed a higher attractiveness tofruit flies compare with Occimum sp. extract. However, the effectiveness of those attractants wasdecreased with time. The species of fruit flies recorded was Bactrocera dorsalis Hendel.Key words: Attractans, fruit flies, Occimum sp., M. bracteates.

Abstract

A study aiming at comparing the effectiveness of seed extract of Phaleria papuena Warb and chemical insecticides for controlling beet armyworm pest (Spodoptera exigua Hubner) at the onion crops has been conducted. The experiment was set up by using a completely randomized design (CRD) with five treatments and tree replicates. The treatments applied were: without insecticide application as a control (P0), botanical insecticide, Phaleria papuena extract 2% (P1), 4% (P2), and 6% (P3), and chemical insecticide, prevathon 50 SC (P4). Variables measured were Spodoptera exigua population density and intensity of pest infestation. Results showed that application of botanical  and chemical insecticides significantly reducing the population density and the infestation of Spodoptera exigua. Effectiveness of Phaleria papuena extract 6% (P3) and prevathon (P4) was not significantly different in controlling Spodoptera exigua. In average, the application of Phaleria. papuena extract 6% (P3) and prevathon (P4) reduced population density at 9.4% and 9.3%, respectively, and infestation intensity of Spodoptera exigua 37.8% and 36.7%, respectively. These results suggest that the seed extract of Phaleria papuena is highly potential to be developed as botanical insecticide. Key Words : Botanical insecticides, Phaleria papuena, Spodoptera exigua.
