Abstract

The study was conducted to evaluate the growth inhibition effect of leaf extract of Crown plant (LEC), Calotropis gigantean, at various concentrations (5%, 4%, 3%, 2 %, 1 %, and 0% ) on S. exigua larvae.  Inhibition effect was quantified by using growth (GI) and relative growth (RGI) indexes which have some advantages compared to other insect growth parameters. The results showed that the growth inhibition effect of the leaf extract of C. gigantea could be detected using the GI and RGI. The RGI values decreased with increasing of the extract concentration and the LC50 value of LEC to S. exigua was about 2.42 %. The results suggested that C. gigantea extracts contain insect growth inhibitor substance.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out the effectiveness of tomatoes as a trap crop to control liriomyzachinencis, the leaf cutter pest s and its parasitoids on onion plants varieties with a different planting time at Palu valley. This research was conducted on June until August 2015 in Langaleso village, west Dolo of Sigibiromaru Regency, central Sulawesi procince. Also futher research was conducted at the laboratory of pest and plant disease of agriculture faculty, tadulako university palu. This research applied an experimental research design by using cluster random sampling. It was treated with one kind of trap crop (tomatoes) with four different planting time, namely : 0, 2, 4, and 6 weeks before the onion being planted. The parameters observed was a kind of liriomyzachinensis, amount of excavation, and the abundance of parasitoid at the level of parasitism. The results of thi research showeded the average number of excavation liriomyzachinencis on the control plants on the eighth week was higher than average number of excavation liriomyzachinencis on the other plants which was given a trap crop treatment. There were two species of parasitoids found on the research area, namely Hemiptarsnusvaricornis and Opius sp. With a level of parasitism which range 23% until 27%.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the effect of various insecticides against beet armyworm pest (S.exigua) and onion yield. The experiment were conducted in Poso district and arranged using arandomized block design (RBD) with two-factor treatment and tree replicates each. The first factorwas the type of Insecticides (I) consists of three treatments and one control, namely: (1) Noinsecticides (I0), (2) botanical insecticides (neem leaf extract) 50 g/l of water (I1). (3) Biologicalinsecticides, the fungus Beauveria bassiana 10 g/l of water (I2) and (4) chemical insecticides,Klensect 200 EC 1 ml/l of water (I3). The second factor was onion varieties composed of: (1) Bima(V1) and (2) Tinombo (V2) vartieties. Variabel measured included: S.exigua population density, percentage of attacks of S.exigua, and dry weight of tuber. The results showed that insecticidestreatment significantly affected the population density and S.exigua attacks on onion crops in thedistrict of Poso. The effectiveness of chemical and botanical insecticides on suppressing thepopulation density and the attack of S. exigua were nearly similar and significantly higher than thatof biological insecticide. The population density and percentage of S. exigua attacks did not differsignificantly in both varieties but dry weight of tuber was higher in Bima variety. There was nointeraction effect between insecticides and onion variety on population density and attackpercentage of S. exigua as well as on tuber weight.Key words: Insecticides, onion, S. exigua variety, and yield.

Abstract

Understanding and utilization of insect pest behavior are needed for developing an effectivecontrolling program. An experiment has been conducted in a chili plantation to determine how capturesof oriental fruit fly (Bactrocera sp.) were affected by combining olfactory and visual stimuli in traps. The study was performed by using a Completely Randomized Block design with 6 combinationtreatments of chemical (Melaleuca bracteata extract, MB) and visual (colour trap) cues and 3replications. The results showed that combination of MB and yellow colour of the traps wassignificantly more attractive to fruit flies than the other treatments and such treatments could reducethe infested level of the flies. Although chemical cues most likely has a stronger effect than visualcues on trapping the flies, this study suggest that an effective control of oriental fruit fly shouldinclude both visual and olfactory cues.Key words: Behavioral based control, fruit flies, trapping.

Abstract

The purpose study was to determine the effect of various kinds of mulch on the    infestation of Spodoptera exigua (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) in onion crops. This research was conducted in the onion crop  in the  Bolu Pountu Jaya village, Sigi Biromaru Regency, Sigi Subdistric from January to March 2014.  The study was using a randomized complete block design which consists of 4 treatments namely: without mulch (P0), rice straw mulch 4,5 kg/plot (P1), cocoa husk mulch 4,5 kg/plot (P2) and plastic mulch (P3).  Observation variables consist      of pest attack rate,  crops height and production.  The results showed that the mulching treatment have a significant effect of attack intensity of S.exigua on onion crop, but has no effect on crop height and production. Onion crops that grown without using a mulch have a high rate attack from pest than the onion without mulching. Key Words : Onion, mulch, Spodoptera exigua.

Abstract

The study was conducted to evaluate effects of varied concentrations of methanol extract of lemongrass, Andropogon nardus L. (10.5%, 9.5%, 8.5%, 7,5%, 6.5%, and 0% as control) on mortality andfeeding activity of the third-instars of P.xylostella larvae. It was used a randomized complete designwith three replicates. The results showed that the leaf extract of Andropogon nardus at 8.5 % wasthe best treatment as it could caused high mortality of P. xylostella (66.67 %) and it was able todeter the feeding activity up to 82.66 %. The data suggested that extracts of Andropogon narduscontains toxic oil and feeding activity repellant.Key words: Diamondback moth, insecticidal activity, lemon grass.

Abstract

The study was conducted to evaluate eggs lay preferences of white stem borer (Scirphopagainnotata) on three varieties of dry land rice. The experiment was set up in a CompletelyRandomized design consist of three varieties (Habo, Superwin dan Sunggul Manohon) with fivereplicates. Preference test was arranged in free chosen and non chosen test. Parameter measuredwas the number of eggs oviposited by Scirphopaga innotata 4 days after application. The resultsshowed that the highest number of eggs was recorded in Superwin variety followed by Habo andSunggul Manohon. The data suggested that Habo and Superwin varieties were more preferred as ahost plant by Scirphopaga innotata compared with Sunggul Manohon and indicated that bothvarieties were more susceptible to Scirphopaga innotata.Key words: Dry land rice, preferences, rice white stem borer.
