Abstract

This paper explains theoretical studies concerning urban heritage conservation. One of the frequently occurring problems in urban heritage is obsolescence. During the rapid process of urban development, regeneration of urban historic quarters is important in establishing and maintaining the character and identity of a city. This could be done by recovering the urban areas from obsolescence through renewal of the physical fabric as well as by revitalizing their economic life. The city of Solo, Indonesia, provides an example how the Municipality through revitalization programs of several historic public open spaces has started some efforts concerning urban heritage conservation. Through the case studies, this papers tries to identify main problems faced by urban heritage of Solo especially by those historic public open spaces. It also intend to look at how the Municipality dealt with these problems through revitalization programs. It also tries to analyze several dimensions in urban conservation of both historic parks before and after the revitalization programs. This paper concludes by addressing several lessons learned from the case studies, that substantial identified problems concerning conservation and socio-cultural aspects were resolved through revitalization programs. Despite the city’s success in restoring their original function as public space as well as rehabilitating the decaying structures within the areas, some challenges still remain concerning the issues of authenticity and sustainability of the urban heritage.

Abstract

The Dutch heritage that can be found in Buru Regency is the former residence of the Dutch controller. This building has historical value for Buru Regency because it is estimated that it has been established since the early 20th century and is still used today as the Office of the Civil Service Police Unit. Reuse or adaptive re-use is intended to maintain the sustainability of the building, but in doing so there are conservation ethics that must be considered so that the preservation can run well. Therefore, this study was conducted with the aim of finding out whether or not the ethics of conservation in the former Dutch controller's residence were appropriate by conducting literature studies, observing local libraries and building locations directly, and conducting interviews with building users. The results of this study found that most of the conservation ethics in the former Dutch controller's residence were not met, although some had been fulfilled.

Abstract

Buildings play diverse roles dictated by human activities within them. Yet, when a building loses its effectiveness in serving its intended purpose, it can become a burden to the city and its community, or else when the owner sees an opportunity to generate income without making significant architectural changes. The concept of adaptive reuse emerges as a solution, aiming to revitalize these buildings. This approach considers factors like architectural and cultural integrity in making design decisions, influencing spatial and functional transformations. Our research seeks to explore the intricacies of adaptive reuse, focusing on how cultural and architectural integrity guide design choices and shape the evolution of space and function. The study delves into two previous Javanese houses turned into museum (Omah UGM) or restaurant (Restoran Lumbung Mataram). A qualitative research specifically was applied to this study with direct survey and interviews for data collection. By comparing data from these buildings, the research aims to highlight differences in decision-making processes for adaptive reuse and their impact on cultural and architectural integrity of the repurposed buildings.

Abstract

Title: Acculturation of Javanese Architecture in Yogyakarta; Pedimented façades in Javanese architecture at the Kraton Yogyakarta and Dalem Notonegaran At the beginning of the 20th century, European Colonialism dominated almost all parts of the world. In this period, cultural acculturation was developed between European and local cultures in the colonised territory, including architecture. Many studies concerning architectural acculturation in the late colonial era emphasised the roles of European agents in appreciating while dominating the local culture. This research presents an alternative perspective by focusing on the Javanese elite as the agents of cultural change. Javanese architecture, on the one hand, with its long tradition, has recognisable stylistic formulation. On the other hand, it has a great degree of adaptation, giving chances for acculturation with many other architectural traditions. At the beginning of the 20th century, one exciting dynamic was the façade with pediment incorporating European Neo-Classical architecture. Originating in Ancient Greek Architecture, pediments continuously developed as a reference in European architecture. In Yogyakarta, the aristocratic circle adopted a pedimented façade supported by twin columns on both ends combined with many elements of Javanese culture. This research compares several pedimented façades with various cultural sources and architectural compositions in several buildings in the Sultan’s Palace of Yogyakarta and the princely residence of Notonegaran. From this comparison, this research discovers the progressive sides of Javanese architecture with many novel syntheses incorporating European architectural elements and Javanese ornamentations with novelty in composition, technology, and representation.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the impact of implementing the Settlement Environmental Management Plan Document (RPLP) in strengthening community capacity in the KOTAKU Program for environmentally sustainable development. The KOTAKU program is a government initiative that aims to improve access and quality of urban settlements, with a focus on slum settlements. RPLP is a planning document that provides guidance in structuring an integrated, sustainable and participatory settlement environment. This research uses a qualitative method by conducting case studies at several locations that have implemented RPLP in the KOTAKU Program. Data was collected through in-depth interviews with various stakeholders, including local communities, local governments and other relevant institutions. The analysis is carried out by identifying changes that have occurred in community capacity after the implementation of the RPLP, including increased knowledge, skills, and participation in decision-making related to the settlement environment. The results of this study indicate that the implementation of the RPLP in the KOTAKU Program has a positive impact on strengthening community capacity. Community participation in planning and decision-making processes increases, resulting in a better and more sustainable living environment. Communities also acquire new knowledge and skills in managing the residential environment, such as waste management, energy saving and utilization of local resources. This research makes an important contribution in understanding the importance of implementing RPLP in environmental sustainable development. The recommendations resulting from this research can be used by local governments and other related institutions to increase the effectiveness of the KOTAKU Program and strengthen the community's role in environmentally sustainable development.

Abstract

Waste is a serious environmental problem worldwide. Waste can refer to various types of materials or substances resulting from human, industrial, agricultural and other activities. The waste problem covers aspects such as management, environmental impact and human health. In this paper, an Islamic perspective on waste recycling in building architecture is discussed. Case studies involving architectural works with the use of building waste reflect the principle of recycling in practice. Waste buildings are materials or structures which have been retired for their original purpose but which still have the potential to be reused with little or no major alterations. Architectural works such as households, community facilities, or even commercial buildings can use used materials that are still usable to reduce demand for new resources. However, in implementing the recycling concept in architecture, it is necessary to pay attention to several aspects, such as structural safety, quality of used materials, and compatibility with the surrounding environment. Islam encourages the use of resources wisely and in moderation, as well as minimizing negative impacts on the environment. This is the responsibility of humans as caliphs on earth to preserve the environment and to maintain the balance of the ecosystem. as well as compatibility with the surrounding environment. Abstract

Kotagede is one of the districts in Yogyakarta with many historical sites. However, because of the dense morphology of the area that is characterised by small alleys, creating an atmosphere gap between the main street and the village tourism kampung. One of Kotagede's attractions, the silver crafts industries, is a sector that utilises much of the main street space in the form of retail shops. This study aims to explore the character of silver craft industry on Kotagede's main streets using the genius loci phenomenological method. Three parameters of image, space and character were used as the unit of analysis to identify the spirit of the area on Mondorakan and Kemasan streets. The results of the literature study and field observations show that both streets function as landmarks and representations of the silver industry sites. The results of the study are expected to be one of the references in the implementation of the revitalisation of tourist areas in Kotagede.

Abstract

The development of astronomy in the golden age era began with the discovery of astrolabes and predicting lunar and solar eclipses, the movement of stars, prayer times, determining the calendar system, and determining the direction of the Qibla. From these discoveries, knowledge about Qibla direction determination technology developed from time to time. The history of determining the direction of Qibla in Indonesia, especially in Yogyakarta, has its pros and cons in its implementation. The renewal figure was KH Ahmad Dahlan who was the pioneer of the Qibla direction based on astronomical calculations. This research was conducted at Langgar Kidoel KH Ahmad Dahlan Yogyakarta, which was the first Muslim place of worship to apply an astronomical system in determining the direction of the Qibla in Indonesia. This study aims to determine the application of astronomy in the history of Islamic civilization and its relation to architecture. The results of the study show that astronomy is very influential in the field of architecture, namely in determining the direction of the Qibla and the cardinal directions which have an impact on the design of the orientation of the building and the concept of Islamic architecture. In building orientation, the Qibla direction and the cardinal directions are closely related to building physics and building access; while in the concept of Islamic architecture, the direction of the Qiblah and the cardinal directions affect the spatial arrangement in accordance with the Sunnah of the Prophet.
