Abstract

Abstract. The neutrophil lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is one of the variables related to the severity of COVID-19 disease. Therefore, we evaluated the value of NLR in COVID-19 patients and its relation to the symptoms and severity of COVID-19 at Tadjuddin Chalid Hospital, Makassar. We recruited patients visiting Tadjuddin Chalid Hospital Makassar who were willing to take part in the study in April to August 2021. Demographic, clinical and laboratory data were recorded through interviews and medical records. The severity of the disease is classified according to the guidelines from the association of Indonesian pulmonary doctors, Indonesian internal medicine doctors, Indonesian pediatricians, anesthesiologists and intensive care doctors, and the Indonesian cardiologist association. NLR data was obtained by calculating the ratio between neutrophil levels and lymphocyte levels in the blood. A total of 130 patients took part in the study, between 19-72 years old. There were 77 subjects (59.2%) with mild symptoms, 28 (21.6%) with moderate symptoms, and 25 (19.2%) with severe symptoms. There were 89 subjects with NLR <3.5 (68.5%) and 41 (10.8%) with NLR > 3.5. NLR values in patients with severe and moderate disease were significantly different from NLR in patients with mild disease (p =0.0002 dan p<0.0001, respectively). However, no significant difference was found in NLR between patients who neither have cough nor fever with those who had one or both of those symptoms. The presence of clinical or radiological symptoms of pneumonia accompanied by an NLR > 3.5 can be used as an indicator for a suspected moderate or severe COVID-19 diagnosis. Keywords: COVID-19, neutrophil lymphocyte ratio (NLR), pneumonia, disease severity, diagnostic tool

Abstract

Malaria parasites, Plasmodium spp, can develop resistance to anti-malarial drugs. Hence, potential alternative therapeutic agents should be explored. This research aimed to investigate the anti-malarial effect of a combination of Carica papaya and Moringa oleifera leaf extract. Peter’s test performed on Balb/c mice to investigate the malarial parasite growth inhibition. Mice were infected with Plasmodium berghei by intraperitoneal injection to provoke rodent malaria. After infection, we grouped every 5-6 mice into different treatment groups, including a negative control group, a positive control group treated with artesunate, a moringa group, a papaya group, and a combination therapy group. Treatments were initiated 3 hours after infection (day 0) and continued every day until day 3. On day 4, we examined a thin smear of the tail vein blood for parasitemia to calculate the suppression rate. The result shows that the parasite suppression rate of C. papaya leaf extract (CPLE) is 15.02 % (percent parasitemia 4.56±1.96), the suppression rate of M. oleifera leaf extract (MOLE) is 17.32% (percent parasitemia 4.44±1.78) and that of the combination extract (CE) is 28.73% (percent parasitemia 3.82±1.48).  In conclusion, there is a synergism of the anti-malarial effect of the combined leaf extract of C. papaya and M. oleifera.

Abstract

LATAR BELAKANG : Selama pandemi, pemerintah menetapkan Skala Besar Pembatasan Sosial (PSBB) peraturan untuk mengurangi kasus infeksi COVID-19, sehingga intensitas kejadian LBP meningkat lebih dari sebelumnya karantina, mencerminkan ed the negative effect of the regulation. This is due to significant lifestyle changes such as increased time spent sitting, reduced exercise time, and the percentage of individuals reporting more stress during quarantine than before the PSBB was established. The current study reports the impact of low back pain which results in disruption of the patient's functional status due to the need for annual medical expenses and the limited visits of patients to health services, so this indicates that low back pain sufferers need to evaluate how much functional disability occurs and the factors that influence it. OBJECTIVE : To determine the relationship between pain intensity and functional status of LBP patients at the Neurology Polyclinic, RSUP Dr. Wahidin Sudirohosudo. KESIMPULAN : Intensitas nyeri berhubungan bermakna dengan status fungsional pasien Low Back Pain (LBP) di RSUP Dr. Wahidin Sudirohusodo Kata kunci : Low Back Pain, NRS, Barthel Index
