Abstract

This article examines the epistemological critique advanced by Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas against the concept of truth relativism inherent in Thomas Kuhn's theory of scientific paradigms. This study uses a library research method with a qualitative approach that is descriptive-analytical and comparative. According to Kuhn, scientific truth is relative to the paradigm adhered to by a scientific community, which encompasses a set of beliefs, values, and methods. As paradigms can shift through scientific revolutions, truth consequently becomes non-absolute and subject to change. In contrast, Syed Naquib al-Attas proposes an epistemology rooted in the Islamic tradition, wherein truth is considered absolute, objective, and derived from divine revelation. Al-Attas criticizes Kuhn's relativism because it disregards the metaphysical dimension of truth and potentially undermines the moral foundations and ultimate purpose of science. This study highlights the fundamental dichotomy between the secular-relativistic modern Western epistemology and an Islamic epistemology that upholds transcendent truth. As a solution, al-Attas proposes the project of the "Islamization of contemporary knowledge," a process of purifying knowledge by removing its secular, dualistic, and relativistic elements. Its ultimate aim is to restore science to its original function as a means to recognize the ultimate Truth (al-Haqq) and to serve God. Thus, the Islamization of knowledge is not merely a critique but a constructive proposal to the edifice of modern epistemology, which is perceived to have lost its spiritual and ethical compass.

Abstract

The presence of digital media provides space for educational institutions to disseminate spiritual educational content to the community quickly and accurately. Various photo and video content of school activities can be published through various digital platforms. This Community Service was carried out at the State Elementary School of Galak Village, Slahung District, Ponorogo Regency, which aims to improve teacher skills in writing captions, photography and videography in order to optimize the school's spiritual educational content through digital media. The community service program is based on the results of observations and interviews with the principal which show that the use of school digital media has not been running optimally due to the low knowledge and skills of teachers in writing captions, photography and videography as a provision of skills in creating educational digital content. The implementation of the community service program through socialization and direct practice to train teachers as program participants in understanding and creating digital educational content. The results of the community service show a significant increase in the aspects of participants' understanding and skills in creating content and managing social media as an educational instrument. In addition, the school's previously inactive social media was then updated and reused to spread spiritual values in a creative and interesting way.

Abstract

Shadows as observable natural phenomena are described in the Qur’an, particularly in Surah al-Furqān (25:45–46), which portrays their extension, movement, and relation to the sun. This study aims to analyze the concept of al-ẓill (shadow) in these verses through a semantic-based approach to tafsīr ‘ilmī and to examine its conceptual correlation with principles of geometric optics. The research employs a qualitative textual method using a three-layered analytical framework consisting of semantic deconstruction, exegetical mapping, and conceptual correlation. The first stage analyzes key Qur’anic terms—madda, ẓill, dalīlan, and qabḍnāhu—through classical Arabic lexicons and semantic field analysis. The second stage examines interpretations from classical and modern exegetical works to trace the historical understanding of the verses. The third stage explores the conceptual alignment between the Qur’anic description of shadows and established principles of geometric optics concerning shadow formation and solar geometry. The findings indicate that the Qur’an describes shadows as dynamic and orderly phenomena governed by the position of the sun, reflecting a coherent observational pattern compatible with scientific explanations of shadow formation and variation. Rather than presenting scientific predictions, the Qur’anic narrative offers a phenomenological description of natural processes that invites reflection on cosmic order and divine wisdom. This study contributes a methodological model for interdisciplinary research that integrates semantic analysis of Qur’anic language with responsible engagement with scientific knowledge.
